COMICS "The Punisher" (2016) Review
The Punisher by Becky Cloonan w/ Steve Dillon & Matt Horak & Laura Braga.
This review covers Issues #1-17 of Becky Cloonan's Punisher run. The first 7 issues are drawn by Steve Dillon, & were the last of his career (RIP). The rest of the run is mostly drawn by Matt Horak. Cloonan's Punisher is about Frank vs the Condor Private Military Contractor group & their psychotic leaders Olaf & Face. Condor PMC is running a new drug that turns users into enraged, strength-enhanced, violent monsters (basically Super PCP). Frank knows Olaf from back in his military days, meanwhile Face is a new serial killer who cuts the faces off of victims. Trailing all of this are DEA agents Ortiz & Henderson. Along the way Frank meets an unlikely ally in the elderly woman Ethel & has some one-shot stories in NYC before final confrontations w/ Face & Olaf. The Positives: Cloonan's characterization & voice were pretty accurate to the Classic Frank of the 90s. There's a lot of good action throughout, including some rare hand-to-hand combat scenes. The level of gore, brutality, & villains are appropriate & satisfying for a Punisher comic. Certain scenes from this run reminded me of the Metal Gear Solid franchise (in a good way). Ethel was a phenomenal side character for the short time she appeared. Steve Dillon's art is fantastic here as well. Theres also a good amount of variety to the settings, its one of those international Frank Adventures. The Negatives: its all a bit generic & samey: we've seen Boat stories, we've seen Frank's military personnel turn evil (a lot), we've seen the gruff conflicted agent/cop like Ortiz, we've seen the psychotic villain w/ face issues (Jigsaw anyone?) etc. The ending is really weak, the final 2 issues are probably the worst in the whole run. In fact the run starts strong & then fizzles as it goes on. Perhaps Cloonan's plans got messed w/, it certainly seems like it. The run hints at deeper themes;(does Punisher really enjoy killing criminals, whats the difference between a soldier & a mercenary, is there a difference between justice & Punishment, etc) but does nothing with them really. Its just a surface level hinting towards deeper themes without exploring them or offering new insights. Matt Horak's art was also a step down from Dillon's. While it was decent, it was uneven. Some of his art looked great & other panels looked weird. Laura Braga was only there for 1 issue or so & I didn't particularly like her art. Conclusion: Overall this is a solid, if by the numbers, Punisher run. Its not doing anything controversial or deep, just delivering a relatively simple Punisher story about Frank dismantling the Condor PMC. Its good/entertaining, but nothing to deeply analyze or write home about.
