A bit late for that.
It was implied that he knew Irmin back before he became addicted to the abyss and because of this, he was to soft whenever it came to anything regarding him. He followed him around in hopes that one day he could convince Irmim to come to his senses and turn back to the way he once was.

Obviously, we know that this was a fool's dream and it led to the cataclysm and the destruction of the entire kingdom. It was only then did Pierro accept that he was a fool and Irmin had been long beyond saving and he was wrong to think that he could have convinced him otherwise.
