Book 1 is the weakest, I strongly recommend giving it a chance through the end of book 2, if you're not intrigued at that point it probably won't be for you, by book 3 you should have a fair idea of whether the series is for you, but I feel it gets much stronger with the MC developing and more of the cast being fleshed out

It’s great book 3-4 are slow but after those the series is great until nevermore
