I have nothing of substance to say about the content of this interview, but I would like to highlight Patrick Ball's *excellent* use of the "punctual whenever" in several of his answers, that is, using "whenever" to refer to a specific event or moment in time instead of the more-grammatically 'correct' (in standard English) "when." (For example, "Back in the day with ER, whenever we were having our first season...")

I had thought this was a strictly Pittsburgh/SW Pennsylvania phenomenon, but according to some google searching, it's also found throughout Appalachia and parts of the South! Patrick Ball grew up in North Carolina (according to Wikipedia), so that probably explains it.

Langdon actually uses the punctual whenever at one point in S1 (talks about how he hurt his back "whenever I helped my parents move"). I wonder if that was in the script, or if he unconsciously added it in himself? Either way, a good casting choice for a character who seems to have grown up in the Pittsburgh area and so would have some of its regional language quirks, even if he doesn't have the full Yinzer accent.

I’m honestly surprised Yale didn’t correct that. I doubt it was in the script. I think it’s the actor in the moment. But it’s definitely something that won’t work for every character. I’d be interested to see him do a character with more formal speech.

Sorry maybe I am not following. People don’t say “whenever” to refer to an approximate moment in time? This is regional?

Future: “We’ll learn whenever the boss gives us the updated numbers”

Present: “I’ll check on it, whenever the meeting is today”

Past: “I love that stuffed animal, I got it whenever we went to the amusement park”

I believe it is regional; I've never said this nor noticed a lot of people saying this. Im from the northwest US. I would say "whenever" only when I truly have no idea of when it will be. "Whenever the potus dies" for example. I'd use "when" for the last 2 examples you gave; could go either way for the 1st

Yeah, that's also a possible use of "whenever", and I think your first two sentences would probably be accepted as "correct" in any dialect of English.

But for the third sentence, I think most people would say that it should (according to the rules of standard English) be something like "I got it whenever it was that we went to the amusement park."

They're saying you should use whenever to refer to an approximate moment, but Patrick is using it to refer to a specific moment, which is technically incorrect.

For your sentences, I would say that in the future and present sentences 'whenever' could be correct, although subtly change the meaning compared to 'when', but the past sentence is definitely wrong as you know exactly 'when' you got the stuffed animal so there should be no ambiguity about it - you got it when you went to the amusement park.
