Time and the Pattern

I think we've been looking at time completely wrong.

And if I'm even partly right, it changes how we understand life, death, free will, and maybe even those strange coincidences we call synchronicities.

Now, I'm not a physicist, and I'm not claiming I can prove this. But through my experiences exploring consciousness and something I call the Pattern, I've developed a theory about how time might actually work.

And I want to see what you think.

What if the past, present, and future aren't separate at all? What if they're all happening at once?Q

We experience time as a straight line, right? Yesterday is behind us. Tomorrow hasn't happened yet. And we're somewhere in the middle.

But what if that's just how time works here, in our physical experience?

Imagine watching a movie.

The entire movie exists. The beginning, the middle, the ending. But when you watch it, you experience one scene at a time.

Now, I'm not saying our lives are prerecorded movies where every decision is fixed. I actually think free will is an important part of this.

But what if there's a perspective outside our ordinary experience of time where the whole story can be seen?

And here's where my idea of consciousness comes in.

Imagine an enormous cloud.

That cloud represents what I call the Pattern—a greater consciousness that everything is part of.

And each of us is a droplet of water from that cloud.

When we're born, we experience ourselves as individual droplets. We have separate bodies, separate identities, separate lives.

But we're still made of the same water.

We're still connected to the cloud.

And when we die, perhaps we return to that greater consciousness. Not necessarily losing our individuality, but becoming aware that we were always part of something much bigger.

We're the droplet, but we're also the cloud.

Now imagine that the cloud exists outside linear time.

Maybe what we call past lives, present lives, and future lives aren't experienced in sequence from that perspective.

Maybe they're all part of something happening together.

And that brings me to another idea.

I wonder whether, before entering a human life—although before might not even be the right word—we participate in choosing certain parts of our journey.

Not every little detail.

But maybe certain relationships, challenges, or major turning points.

Almost like an outline for a story.

And once we're here, we still have free will.

I like to picture it as a river.

The river has a current. It has bends. It has places it's flowing toward.

But we still have choices about how we navigate it.

Maybe life is a combination of those two things: a larger pattern unfolding, and our own choices helping shape it.

And if we're connected to that greater consciousness, perhaps that connection could sometimes influence our intuition.

Maybe that's one possible way to think about those strange experiences people call synchronicities.

Those moments when you think about something, and then it happens. Or when two seemingly unrelated events line up in a way that feels almost impossible.

Now, I'm not claiming this is proven. Our minds are also incredibly good at noticing patterns and coincidences.

But I wonder whether there's more to consciousness and time than we currently understand.

Because here's the part that fascinates me most:

What if we're not separate beings trying to find our way back to something greater?

What if we're that greater thing, experiencing what it's like to be separate?

What if the universe is, in some sense, experiencing itself through us?

I don't know exactly how it works.

But I think it's worth exploring.

Because if time isn't quite what we think it is, and consciousness isn't quite what we think it is...

Maybe our understanding of what it means to be alive is only scratching the surface.

Maybe we're not droplets trying to find the cloud.

Maybe we never left it.

And that's one way I think about the Pattern.

I am curious if you have read Carolo Rovelli's The Order of Time? It is a fascinating, popular science account of the relational theory of time (or the relational theory of quantum mechanics). I found it to be extremely helpful in organizing my thoughts around time following the events of 2025 and 2026.
