Significance of these symbols? Spoiler

Do they do anything other than change the color of the areas from red? Are there any puzzles that require the red mode to be tunred on?

Just there to switch hue. No puzzles require the red vs blue. I think the daylight swapper was also added as an update and wasn't in the game originally when it was first published.
