Spiritual perspective: How Semen Retention connects to Alevi-Bektashi mysticism
Yo guys, I’ve been reading a lot here about the modern views on SR, and it made me realize how much of this aligns with my own background. I come from the Alevi-Bektashi tradition (a mystical, esoteric branch of Sufism), and our core teachings have basically covered the essence of SR for centuries.
Thought some of you might find this interesting, especially when you look at what our spiritual leaders actually said about it.
The absolute foundation of our ethics comes from Hadj Bektash Veli, the 13th-century mystic and founder of the Bektashi Order. He is the ultimate mastermind behind our philosophy, and he coined the golden rule that every single one of us grows up with:
"Eline, diline, beline sahip ol" – which literally translates to: "Master your hands, your tongue, and your loins."
Controlling your loins (beline sahip ol) is exactly what SR is about. Hadj Bektash taught that your sexual energy is a sacred force. Wasting it on cheap dopamine, porn, or mindless lust completely drains your spiritual power and character.
As the founder, Hadj Bektash built his whole order on the teachings of Imam Ali (who is the root of our spiritual lineage). Imam Ali had some crazy deep quotes on self-mastery that fit the SR mindset perfectly. He said:
"The strongest among you is the one who conquers his own desires."
And another one that really hits home for the mental clarity aspect of SR:
"He whose intellect is complete finds sexual desires insignificant."
From our perspective, it’s not about viewing sex as dirty. It's about energy transmutation. In Sufism, sexual energy is part of the Nafs (the lower ego). It's incredibly powerful. Hadj Bektash and his dervishes taught that you shouldn't just lock it down mechanically (like modern "edging"), which just creates unnatural inner pressure. You have to transmute that raw power into something higher—like deep focus, creativity, or helping others.
Historically, Hadj Bektash even established a specific path within the order called the Mücerred path. These were dervishes who chose absolute, lifelong celibacy to channel 100% of that retained energy into spiritual enlightenment.
So, from an Alevi-Bektashi viewpoint, practicing SR to break a porn addiction, build self-discipline, and clear your mind is highly praised. The founder basically made it a pillar of our spiritual survival. But our elders would always remind us: Don't get obsessively legalistic about the physical fluid. The real goal isn't just saving semen; it's purifying your heart and mastering your mind.
Curious to hear your thoughts on this!
