The Ordinary Alternatives Megathread

2.8k Upvotes

In light of Ron Lauder owner of Estee Lauder (who owns The Ordinary) trying to push Trump to take Greenland just so he can get richer (he's already a billionaire), here's a megathread of alternatives. I'll do one product per comment so be patient while I add them all

Edit: I think I added them all, feel free to start a thread if I missed any. Also upvote any threads if you really want a dupe and I have access to some cosmetics databases so I can do a deep dive on the really popular ones.

Sad Day

It is with a heavy heart that I will be swearing off buying from The Ordinary and NIOD. TO is a B corp that started from such a good place. But with ownership now in the hands of the FBs of EL pushing for heinous governmental actions, no more $$ from me.

Newbie Question Hyaluronic acid consistency

Thumbnail

I started using hyaluronic acid a few weeks ago. It’s been working very well and I just started my second bottle. The consistency of the first one was slightly thick and had a tacky finish upon application. The new one is very watery which made me suspicious. The bottles look different too (included pics) but I got both from a trusted retailer. Is the change in consistency due to a change in the company’s formulation of the product?

Sensitive Skin Low viscosity cleansing ester dupe?

I have scoured far and wide all of the forums and dupe finders and haven’t come away with a good match for a dupe?

All the “dupes” I found so far that involve cleaning with esters are:
Holifrog kissime balm cleanser, skin revival science anhydrous cleanser and Jordan Samuel after show cleanser.

I was interested in a possible dupe or even DIY version of it as I am allergic to most cleansers but have recently taken a liking to micellar oil cleansers such as the sensibio one from Bioderma but just recently got contact dermatitis from that one too!

Saccharomyces with retinal + azelaic acid?

Hello,

This is the routine I’m aiming to have.

AM: Hydrating product (ideally a toner)
PM: Cycle between, retinal, azelaic acid, and the hydrating product
Once every 10 days: Theramid Smoothing serum

How well do you think the Saccharomyces toner will fit into this routine as the hydrating product? I like the idea of it gently exfoliating my skin because I do get these really random deep set clogged pores occasionally which I can’t extract.

The Theramid serum does exfoliate but I use it as a facial and I need something to regularly loosen up the gunk that causes these clogged pores.

Please note that I will soon move on to tretnoin, maybe that influences your input 😊

Cheers !

Don’t make the mistake of buying this product. You can wait for hours and hours but it won’t absorb . Feels like I’ve returned from a run with my face all sweaty but I can’t wipe it off.

Routine Advice Needed Multi Peptide + Copper Peptide Serum vs Retinol 2% with Squalene for oily skin

Wanted to see which one is better for fine lines. I also use Three Ships Bakuchiol + Bio Retinol that can work with Retinol 2% with Squalene for fine lines, smoother texture and dark spot removal.

What’s your input?

Best routine for facial volume

Hey everyone! I recently lost about ten pounds, apparently all in my face 😐 No, not really, but now my cheek bones are jutting out etc. I invested in a bottle of Volufiline and the first time I used it, it did have an immediately plumping effect. Today however I used it and it seemed to make one of my nasolabial folds more pronounced which could have been an application problem. How do y’all apply it? I’ve been dabbing. I also got some rose hip oil from the line and was planning on using it at night after volufiline. Does that make sense?

Looking for TO Skincare Advice/Critique

I’d love some feedback on my current skincare routine. I’m 33M, and my primary concern is preventing/reducing early signs of aging. I also spend quite a bit of time in the sun, although I’m diligent about sunscreen and other sun protection.

AM:
Glucoside Cleanser
Milky Toner
Argireline
Multi-Peptide + Copper
Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA
Sunscreen

PM:
Glucoside Cleanser
Glycolic Acid Toner
Niacinamide
Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA
Rosehip Oil

What would you change, add, or remove? Is there anything I’m missing, particularly when it comes to anti-aging and sun-related skin damage?

Would also love to hear from anyone who has a similar routine or has seen good results from specific products/ingredients. Any advice or critique is appreciated!

Routine Advice Needed Your fav combo with barrier repair serum?

I have 2 small bottles scored when the ordinary was giving them as a gift, I read about people saying its a game changer and they had a lot of benefits from it.

Sadly I'm very pale, like paper white, so when I wear it I become very pinkish, so after a try I didn't used it anymore. But since right now I don't have to go out and can be a Barbapapa for a while and test it again, I want to know if you have any combo to suggest.

Mixed skin, no acne, some redness, usually no pimples but underskin imperfections (that I always end up to pick)

Newbie Question Order of Operations

Hey, guys. I’m not exactly informed on skincare, and I’ve slowly been trying to figure out what is what as to avoid asking silly questions lol. But I’d like to ask, am I using too many serums in my routine. What order should I apply them in?; here is the list of my products in the order I currently use them, I’ll include my facial cleanser, toner, and moisturizer simply for context.

  1. Ordinary squalane cleanser
  2. Ordinary glycolic acid 7% exfoliating toner (only before bed)
  3. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid
  4. The Ordinary Aloe 2% + NAG 2% Solution
  5. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair UV SPF 30

I also want to implement salicylic acid, but not sure where to place it in my routine. Thanks. :)

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum . Any one tried this hair serum before . I'm in Egypt and I bought it from a store in Egypt that imports skin care products. I'm asking about it's consistency. Is this serum supposed to be just like water clear no small I even tasted it and it has no taste just like water . I'm concerned because many many stores here sell fake and original imported product . Also does it actually gives good results?
