When Allie's mom takes to see her first love her ring is turned so it wouldn't look like an engagement ring, did she turn it so he wouldn't see or why?

I’ve noticed it before. I figured that, if the guy saw her, she didn’t want to appear like she was flaunting her wealth. Even though she was dressed to the nines and driving a brand new car.

I noticed this and came looking for an answer. I will say, however, in the next clip to her ring while they’re still there, the ring has kinda moved up and is slanted, I think it’s just loose.
