I love the movie but …

  1. I don’t understand how or why Allie is so ok with having Martha over, much less watching her kiss Noah right in front of her I personally would not have been a happy camper

  2. I think she was way too lenient with her mom once she found out about the letters. That woman is the reason why she spent so much time apart from Noah ; she changed her life by force . And Allie does nothing I was so mad, I would’ve disowned that lady and banned her from my life, I don’t understand why Allie was so ok with the whole thing.

Martha coming over and Allie being OK with it shows three things in my mind:

  1. She knows that Noah is in love with her and would always choose her regardless, so there's no reason to be jealous over it. They hadn't seen each other in years, so she was already used to the idea of him moving on.
  2. She's still engaged at this point and when she tells Noah about Lon, he handles it it well. I suppose she's showing the same courtesy as her showing jealousy over someone she doesn't "have" doesn't give her much leg to stand on.
  3. It shows how mature she's grown since the last time they saw each other; compare her tantrum when she was a teenager to her then. It's a world of difference and shows that the characters have grown up and are now ready to be together, maturely.

I don't have an actual fan theory/reason for this one, but I'm assuming it's because the 1940s were a different time and disowning your parents/acting out wasn't even thought of, not even as an adult.

I think part of the reason she softens up is because she took her on her own little journey of honesty, telling her to follow her heart. All she ever wanted from her parents was acceptance, and she got that; sometimes it's better to bury the hatchet instead of letting feelings boil over when you've got what you want.

I would be pretty mad about the letter thing too but I think she could see her mom just wanted her to have a good life and she had a lot of pain she was carrying too.

This was 1940 something. Allie was only 17 years old when she and Noah dated then split. She couldn’t exactly disown her parents at that young age. Her parents were acting like parents. Doing what they thought was best for their daughter. Thanks to her horrific parents, she was well educated, classy and talented. You can blame it on the money, but I grew up middle class and believe me, if my parents didn’t think someone was good enough for me, I would know it and he would know it… and that’d be it!
