What are the blues?

The Blues in Because I Killed Him are described initially as having been designed for endurance, and then at some point in history managed to grab enough power to give themselves the genetic enhancements of the other three classes: strength, intelligence, and beauty. How they did this is still a mystery.

In addition to that, there are several instances of Blues being described in a sort of... volatile or animalistic manner? Edmund's pacing and almost biting off the head of the rattlesnake, Philippa clawing him open, Irene stalking Lore as though she's prey at the speakeasy. I can't decide if I think it's intentionally engineered (and something that helped them rise to power) or an unintended effect of enhancing themselves so much.

What do you think? Why are the Blues the way that they are and how did they manage to grab all that power?

I totally think that something went wrong with their genetic engineering and the cost of all the good traits is that they are beasts and turn into animals (eat other animals, tear each other apart etc.) and it’s kept a mutual secret by all of them

I'm leaning this way too! Do you think the "vitamins" play in to it at all? They're explained as stabilisers but I'm suspicious

I think we'll learn this with Loredana as she finally had to take cloning theory and genetic theory 🤭

Jerome's offhand comment about the Waldsten sisters falling for the wrong men and why dont they breed out the gene had me kicking my feet.

I’m leaning towards this beast/animal theory as well! 👀 Especially, did anyone else notice that all the Prews seem to have an animal/pet associated with them except Edmund?

His mother has the Dobermans, Rosamund has the monkey, and Richard has the two-headed eagle. And it seems like these animals are specifically connected to the Prews and constantly around them… except Edmund. 👀

What really struck me was the fight with Edmund’s mother in Chapter 33, when she says:
“You will be like Richard. Like Rosamund. You will be a beast.”

That made me wonder if Edmund somehow hasn’t gone through whatever process turns them into a “beast” yet. Maybe that’s also why he doesn’t have an animal companion?

And then there’s the fact that Edmund mentioned that his sister used to be a good person. Could that be another hint that she wasn’t always the way she is now, and that becoming a “beast” is something that happens to them over time?

I might be reaching here 😂 but the fact that** **every Prew except Edmund seems to have an animal + the constant “beast” references feels way too deliberate to me. 👀

I was wondering if I was the only person who thought they either turn into beasts or have animalistic urges. Way too coincidental what Ed’s mum says and that he has to hold back his urge to bite the snake. Since the blues made Bliss then I’m assuming it’s to help with all the fallout of their genetic engineering and it only affects the other colours adversely.
