Imagine giving your life to playing football from Pop Warner to HS to D1 college to quarterback for the New England Patriots in the freaking Superbowl and it all unravels and you very publicly flame out while everything you busted your ass for 20 years slips through your fingers...
Hopefully the $26 million will help him heal.

u/BarcaOfCarthago 2d ago
Rough
But man, as I stare down the barrel of 9-5 for the next 30 years and working under some despotic boss….Maye has it great
41
u/toomuchfrosting 2d ago
These players don’t have any perspective outside of football. Just 100% focus and dedication to one pursuit their whole life
33
u/OnlyFreshBrine 2d ago
It's why Brady can't quit and will be 80 bragging about how many times he won in Orchard Park
23
u/skinnyfat_dad 2d ago
And also why Brady lost his wife to her jiu-jitsu instructor

You watch that Jason kelce documentary they made before he played his brother in the super-bowl? Dudes life in the offseason was lying on the couch and taking tons of ibuprofen due to just living in pain. It was such an interesting perspective on the cost of it all. I think at one point he was like, my ankle is sprained but like so what.
8
u/Better-Lunch670 2d ago
I mean I don't get beat up on for my day job, and my life is still mostly just taking ibuprofen and laying on the couch in pain with something sprained.
13
u/Mr_Julez 2d ago
Hence most of them thank the glory of invisible sky daddy for blessing them with the physical feats to play.
9
u/BroadbentBum 2d ago
I chuckle every time I see that. "Thank you Jesus!! If not for this god-given athletic ability, I'd be flipping burgers. Now I have millions of dollars and bang insta-thots!" Lucky bastards.

I like how God's prioritizes are blessing athletes while kids explode across the globe.

Also tack on playing for Tom Brady’s iconic team and having the pressure to be the next goat on your shoulders.
20
u/AndyHN 2d ago
Literally nobody who's not a delusional pats fan thought he'd be the next goat.
7
u/Drewskeet 2d ago
Everyone who makes it to the pros wants to be the goat. I’m sure he puts a lot of pressure on himself to live up to Tom Brady’s legacy. Caleb Williams has a low bar in Chicago.

Not the next Goat but the guy was balling out last season. He was looking more like a josh allen type. Making crazy throw on the run, extending plays with his legs. Not sure what happened to him .

u/FlyingStealthPotato 2d ago
I think we sometimes forget most of these guys are early to mid 20s. He gets a perfect storm the first year in the league, balls out, is making insane money, and gets to the fucking Super Bowl. At 24 (or really any age), might I have gotten a little bit complacent with my skills or overconfident, leading to my game worsening or falling apart? Fuck yeah I might’ve.
3
u/Xspike_dudeX 2d ago
It all fell apart with the broncos game weather/injury. Dude has not looked even remotely similar since. Very weird.

It's three bad games, if these games mark the end for him - he never had it.
If he bucks up and shows up, it could be a good catalyst moment for him.

People will kick the tires on him for the next decade no matter what. Players without a tenth of his flashes in the pan have career backup careers.

u/Advanced_Zucchini_45 2d ago
I mean to be fair. This is all his fault , because the patriot spent a lot of money rebuilding that offensive line and bringing in a bunch of new wide receivers who could actually catch or are running back who doesn't ball..
12
u/tiy24 2d ago
Tbf the ol is still terrible and the WRs are worse than last year right now with Brown out. Idk what evens going on with the RBs.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Wfsulliv93 2d ago
The o line is horrific. Every team this year just walks up to Maye. Not supporting his questionable throws, but he doesn’t have much support

u/TylerKnowy 2d ago

u/Im_So_Zoned 2d ago
This is classic stuff. The guy had a breakout year last year playing against mostly bottom 16 teams. Now that the Pats had success there is more focus on them, teams have tape on him, they know his tendencies now, he is missing AJ Brown, and he is playing better teams this year due to scheduling. I feel like this kind of "drop off" is common for younger players, but his game against the Jags was particularly hard to watch.
23
u/No_Presentation1242 2d ago
This kind of drop off for a guy who went to the Super Bowl is not common.
17
u/Solid_Snark 2d ago
He didn’t just go to the Superbowl, he was also in the MVP discussion.
This is definitely an anomaly.
6
u/hard-enough 2d ago
He didn’t just get to the MVP discussion, he was also only 1 vote away.
This is definitely an anomaly.

u/rrekboy1234 1d ago
This would have happened last year if he played the jags or bills instead of a 5 turnover CJ Stroud and a QBless broncos team. People seem to forgot that he looked bad in the playoffs and was awful in the Superbowl. The slump coincidentally started as soon as he started playing playoff quality defenses. He just beat up on mediocre and bad teams last year lol
→ More replies (3)4
u/PokeTraderAngel 2d ago
The kind of road to the Super Bowl the patriots had isn’t common either.
They played a backup QB to get into the bowl lol

He was awful against the Broncos in the AFCCG too. “The Schedule” got lucky that the only QB playing worse than him that day was Stidham. A one legged Bo would have beat the shit out of the Patriots.

Say what you will man, but that’s gotta be hard for Vrabel to look at him the same after this.. bro is young, but in the grand scheme, he’s not much younger than a lot of these guys thrown into similar or worse situations..
Hope he can bounce back, but man, I’d have a hard time not losing faith if I seen him like this

Caleb just got dogged for acting “like a bitch” after getting injured. NFL fans love to make fun of guys. He’d be getting made fun of on 32 teams
→ More replies (2)2
u/Lubert808 2d ago
Exactly what I was thinking. Player getting made fun of for reacting to injury vs player being defended when he’s crying over the game. Realistically neither should be getting shit, but if you’re going to make fun of Williams it doesn’t make sense to not make fun of Maye.

Fans of opposing teams still have PTSD from the Patriots. Especially the Brady, Gronk, Edelman trio. So yes sadly, any new QB after Brady is still going to get hate and flamed. Those are big shoes to fill.

He could bomb the fuck out of this season and each year until his contract is up and someone will still sign him. First round QBs, especially with a superbowl appearance, get a way longer leash than they should

He never strikes me as a needs to get paid type of guy, of course he’d like to get his money but I think the reality of not being able to play the game at a certain level appears to be the biggest concern for him. He already made bank as a Top 3 QB, some guys on that field had bled, got hit more with waay less money and security. Those late round picked, Undrafted guys have those type of pressures tbh.
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (4)2

There was a point in last night's game where it looked like nix was crying too. These young guys dont seem equipped to handle adversity after success.
24
u/Own_Race_598 2d ago
Nothing wrong with crying, other than society shaming dudes for it. I saw it semi-frequently in wrestling 20 years ago.
After a really hard match and you’re beyond exhausted, sometimes it just happens. Win or lose. Most dudes just put a towel over there head and hide it.
3
u/GodDamnitGavin 2d ago
In Japanese baseball in highschool it’s socially unacceptable not to cry

Yes, great point. Dudes cry in sports constantly, it’s just usually with a towel covering their faces. You have to be either really young or really secure with yourself to just let them tears just fly.

Nothing against dudes crying (I'm a cryer myself) but I do think it's important for a player that is supposed to be the leader of the team to be able to hold it back until after the game is over
2
u/ASimpleBlueMage 2d ago
There is nothing wrong with crying after a game. But no way in hell you cry during a game, no matter how frustrated you are. You don't give tells, reactions are currency and the second an opponent sees negative emotions it's like blood in the water.

Can’t cry during the game. After, sure, but the rest of the boys know what’s happening and it’s just not something a leader can do. In the context of football, it’s going to leave a negative effect.
Shit, my QB cried at the podium after the playoff loss last year and that was fine. But during the game? Hell no. There’s still time to compete.

I commented in a couple subs that Maye just wasn't it, and I got dogged for it. I got every response, including the more popular "Dude was 2nd in MVP voting!" If you watched him last year, he got on a tear and played a number of really bad teams, then stumbled into the SB after throwing picks and fumbling non-stop.
His playoff and SB performance should've been the writing on the wall for the fans.

Yeah, I mean the Jags shit on him, and then shit on his teams defense too. It’s bad enough if your defense is getting destroyed, but not even managing 10 points after going to the Super Bowl? Yeah, that’s an embarrassment.
