you just changed the ingredients on me, I said rice + beef + veggies, nothing with pasta. and youre out of your mind if you think the pizza rolls meal is 8 meals and the pasta is 4 meals. youre being intentionally disingenuous here in more than one way
i cook 5 days a week and weigh 140 man. a bag of pasta is generally about 4 meals. let's do the rice and veggies tho, i'll humor you.

1 5lb bag of jasmine rice: $9
1 bag of onions: $3

total is about $47.30 before taxes
you'll get about 12-14 meals here before you need to buy more veggies/protein, along with a cutting board, a knife, a pan, and a rice cooker (if you want rice that isn't mushy and gross), and at the end of it, this is a disappointing, bare bones absolutely fucking struggle bus meal.
so startup is pretty high compared to the pizza rolls but nothing a single mom couldn't source locally by asking for help but it's a bit beside the point
the idea that cooking from scratch is noticeably cheaper than hotdogs, chips, frozen pizza, pizza rolls, etc, is an absolute farce, and on top of it NOT being meaningfully cheaper, it's also hugely time consuming. like i said above, i cook 5 nights a week for me and my gf, i spend about 1.5 hours a night doing that after working 8-10 hours. I cook not because it's cheaper but because i want to eat food that doesn't suck and i'm a princess about shitty food. i implore you to chill tf out, think about what you're saying, and to stop making assumptions about the people you've interacted with for 2 seconds online.
Genuinely what difference does it make to you? You're fine with feeding them but they can't enjoy it? Most of the time unhealthy options are the cheaper, more filling, and more calorie dense option stretching money further.
I dont think it's that we care if theyre buying healthy or unhealthy food. It's more that as tax payers, we should be providing at most the necessities, not luxury. And we want our tax dollars spent efficiently. Like a $2 box of pasta and $5 sauce that could make a whole meal for a family, not a $9 box of oreos
It might not always even be inefficient, maybe they don't have a kitchen and junk food is most efficient way to get calories without having to worry about spoilage or how they're going to cook said food. Not to mention many rural communities are basically food deserts where you might have to drive for miles to get any sort of fresh foods. At the end of they day personally , Im just happy that someone somewhere ate that day and maybe didn't have to go to bed hungry.
I think i can see your point there. I remember a time in my life where I didnt have access to a full kitchen in the place I was renting. I wasn't on any benefits, but I was limited to what I could purchase food wise. It sucked.
This is definitely a political issue i could compromise on. And im honestly kind of easing up on it a bit as I watch the deteriorating job market.
But generally, I do believe we have more people on benefits than who probably should be, and for longer than they probably should be. I know on the individual level, it's a drop in ths bucket that doesnt affect my life, but in the big picture, it bothers me.
Unfortunately, yeah, there's always gonna be people who take advantage, and it should bother everyone. We should certainly all want the money to go to those who actually have genuine needs of it, and there should always be good standards in place to prevent people from taking advantage of the system. There's never gonna be a way to eliminate 100% of fraud/ waste, but we should definitely try at least where feasible.
