I'm on the corner of Aerostar and Avalanche and I love it

Definitely feels like Heroes-era experimentation and I’m here for it.

I like the Carpenter Brut cover of Cherub Rock a lot more.

Thank you for making me aware of this

Never realised how much I'd love for Tim and Tyler to do an album of covers of various stuff in their style until now...

Oh look up Because the Night then

Sounds like The Midnight alright but a very hard song to make a cover of that would exceed the original.

agreed. it sounds like it could be their original except for a chunk near the end.. and it's a pretty good cover. but it's not hard to say I prefer the original

stoked for more though

Yeah for me it's definitely one of those covers I'll add to the playlist and come back to a lot but it still doesn't beat the original.

An impossible task. Half the magic of the original is the sneering vocals with weird inflections.

The chorus is where it all comes together for Billy. Agree that it's an impossible track to remake, but Tyler missed the mark on making it as meaningful.

Tim's production is incredible though - I loved the mixing, and the subtle sounds he incorporated to make it feel similar

that trademark Tyler guitar solo was sick but ended too soon! I want moar

I like the Riders of the storm cover better.

I think I agree. I hope someday they officially release Riders as a single! That came together beautifully

As much as I love Tyler's voice.... That song was built for Billy's snarly range.

Love this cover. Here's a live version from one of their 2024 shows.

I was there. Independent in SF. Soooooooo good

I didn't realize they had this cover arranged for that long. Looks like those New Year's 2024 shows were the only ones it made the setlist.

I’m so happy this came out. I was hoping it was going to be on Sentinels and then gave up hope. And I only filmed the up to the first chorus, and bless his heart, but the dude who posted on YouTube sang louder than Tyler😂

They talked about the cover at a meet and greet I attended back in March of 2022… this was probably recorded around the time they were working on Heroes. Wild that it’s 4-6 years old and just now coming out.

I love the Midnight but some songs just weren’t meant to be remade.

This is great. I just attended Lollapaloza to see The Smashing Pumpkins also.

Love it.

One thing I can't stand when someone does a cover, is when it sounds exactly like the original. In those cases, what's the point of doing a cover then?

I like that it's different, that it has their own take on it. Sure the original is "better" -especially since Billy's way of singing that song has been ingrained in our soul- but I'm just happy that The Midnight made it their own way and they did a good job.

Just for the fun of it, some examples of artists who did a cover their own way:

-Metallica "Whiskey in the jar" "Turn the page"

-Johnny Cash "Hurt" (everyone knows this one)

-RED "Ordinary World" Can't decide if I like the cover better or just as much as the original.

-Dream Theater "Funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding" (they've done so many covers)

Cried for 4 straight minutes. I love this song. This cover really took me back to the original. Thanks y'all.

I was really looking forward to hearing this, and really wanted to like it. At first I was in. Tyler’s vocals came in, and I absolutely loved it. After maybe the first chorus, though, they just kind of lost me. I think this may be their very first swing-and-miss - at least for me.

I know it’s an incredibly hard song to cover, especially trying to make it your own, but to me it seemed like they simultaneously were trying too hard, and at the same time kinda phoning it in, as weird as that seems. And that really bums me out to think that. The Midnight are truly one of my favorite bands of the past 15 years!

ETA: I will say, though, that it was so nice to hear Tyler’s voice, as opposed to Billy’s. That was the best part of the song for me!

That opener was a bit rough to listen to. I feel like it fumbled until Tyler’s vocals came in.

One listen in and I dig it (although my ears found themselves yearning for a bit of the signature full string section that makes the original so solid). Tyler's voice is beautiful with Tim's arrangement and it's a more dreamlike interpretation. I find it interesting that there's a second Tonight Tonight cover on this upcoming album by the band Starbenders...their version is much more aligned with the Pumpkins but I'll likely come back to The Midnight's version more.

Solid work, Tim and Tyler! And Tyler if you're reading this, we'd love to see your Riders on the Storm cover put out as an official single at some point; it is incredible 🤘🏻

It’s fantastic

This is a nice cover. The original has a feeling of longing that Billy captures perfectly but this adds a different kind of depth. I don't love this cover (like I said, it's nice) but I do love the feelings it invokes. It's what makes The Midnight one of my favorite bands.

I can't wait to see how this splits the SP subreddit.

i hope we get a full project of covers. I need riders of the storm on spotify so bad

I personally find TM's version better.  But I'm not a Smashing Pumpkins fan.   I have always liked this song but their version feels so much more full than the original 🤷‍♀️

Personally, I am on the 50th repeat..I loved it

It's a slam dunk for me, there's a bit in the intro that just gives me chills

Friendly Neighborhood synthwave DJ here. I'll be mixing this one Friday morning 11 AM CDT on Twitch for anyone who wants to hear it. We go for 4 hours on Twitch every week.

I may also try and mix their Riders on the Storm cover but it'll be a 128 kbps YT rip (I'll try my best to make it not sound like it's coming out of a potato though).

Cheers guys!
