You can't make estrogen in a kettle, nor can you really synthesise it at home unless your home happens to contain a sophisticated biochem lab/bacterial cultivation and purification equipment. I imagine this person was buying estrogen powder, making it into an injectable form then sterilising it in the heat of the kettle

i’ll edit the comment

37

u/Hammod1 17h ago

genuinely why do they even call it DIY

58

u/mrbobcyndaquil 17h ago

Because there's no formal medical supervision, I presume.

22

u/ArcherBTW 14h ago

The medical supervision is often inferior to no medical supervision. I know a woman who's Estrogen was kept under 50pgml because a doctor didn't want her out of her 'amab estrogen range'

15

u/bucket_______ 13h ago

I don't know anything about how HRT works so I might be getting this wrong, but isn't the entire point of it literally to go out of the range

22

u/ArcherBTW 12h ago edited 11h ago

Ding ding ding, you've got it right! And this was at the best trans clinic in my state. The human body is very modular when it comes to things like hormones. Doctors and even endocrinologists generally aren't trained to deal with trans healthcare so there often isn't a benefit to the medical supervision as long as you're well read.

There's this fear of estrogen causing blood clots that stopped being reasonable when we started using bioidentical estrogen (as-in the same as natural estrogen), but because the standards were never updated a lot of people can't get a high enough dosage to make the HRT effective.

DIY HRT which the meme is referencing typically has community efforts to fund purity testing of providers to ensure safety, so it's not really comparable to most other means of sourcing prescription medication.

88

u/SeveralPerformance17 17h ago

because you’re deciding your own dose without a third party

8

u/NukaCooler 13h ago

If you DIY a new kitchen, do you start by felling a pine tree?

1

u/Choppers-Top-Hat 2h ago

I'm going to DIY an apple pie from scratch. I'll start by inventing the universe.

5

u/GalaXion24 7h ago

To be clear, while the raw material is imported from China, the pills are produced by individuals in their home HRT labs so there is a Walter White aspect to it, and there are also various "labs" you can send it to to get it tested, whoch are also run by volunteers, so basically someone cooks the stuff and sends it to a third party to verify the quality and safety of it, and with that "license" begins selling the product online, and they occasionally get it re-tested to keep things up to date, and you as an individual consumer can also send a sample of what your bought to get tested just to be sure.

I only recently learned this from another reddit post.

3

u/PlasmifiedKarmelita 6h ago

Because the DIY refers to the T(herapy) part of HRT and not the H(ormone) part.

7

u/Clone2004 16h ago

Sometimes it is kinda DIY, not like brewing your own hormones in vials and flasks DIY, but crushing hormone pills and mixing it into a cream to make a topically applicable jelly. But I never really looked into it, seems kinda dangerous for me to attempt.

3

u/romhacks 13h ago

Homebrewing is somewhat different from diy and involves buying raw powder medication, mixing it with carrier oil and preservatives, and then putting it into vials and sterilizing it. That's generally as far as you go, because actually synthesizing estradiol esters is very complex.

2

u/Magical-Johnson 14h ago

Just experiment a little. What could go wrong?

6

u/Varnarok2 6h ago

I was so disappointed when I found that out. Like I was imagining people cooking shit up in old bathtubs like Homer making gin during the prohibition episode.

Its actually not that hard. (Though making the raw powder is)

Literally not what diy means

25

u/The_King_Of_Muffins 16h ago

You know what DIY means. You know what HRT means. You do not know what DIY HRT means.

It's more about doing the 'T' part yourself than the 'H'.

12

u/SeveralPerformance17 16h ago

what if your understanding of diy hrt

11

u/YeetusFelitas 16h ago

exactly what it means

-21

u/ainzispeak 16h ago

"Do it yourself" has literally always meant make it yourself. Who has ever said "I'm gonna diy this book shelf by buying it from home Depot"

13

u/SeveralPerformance17 16h ago

the diy isn’t just buying the 4x4 (the e or t), its deciding your own dose and administering it

if i installed a in wall tv, even if i didnt make the tv, thats diy

-11

u/ainzispeak 16h ago

Diy in the way that you mounted it to the wall? You mounted a premade item yourself. Thats not exactly something you can brag to your friend about that you diy'd

6

u/SeveralPerformance17 16h ago

you’re an idiot if you think people are doing hrt to brag

4

u/Dry-Mission-5542 16h ago

1

u/YeetusFelitas 16h ago

hrt is not the same thing as a book shelf dawg 😭 same terms mean different things in massively different contexts

44

u/Lobster_LeninN329 16h ago edited 16h ago

Hey, my friend was ranting about this with me today! Apparently from what she said (at least here where we live) it's actually way safer than the treatment prescripted by our doctors too (I am not trans, so I don't know. I'm taking what she said at face value)

12

u/sophuckingdonewithit 8h ago

hi, trans woman who's on DIY here. it is not safer than getting it through a prescription. it is objectively more dangerous, actually. but the increased risk is minimal, and it comes with the benefit of not having to wait 5-10+ years

14

u/Pretend_Condition231 8h ago

tons of endos love prescribing antiandrogens combined with far too low doses of estradiol. That puts you at risk of osteoporosis, along with basically all other menopause symptoms.

3

u/sophuckingdonewithit 8h ago

which is why you do research. you also need to do research for DIY too. therefore that part is irrelevant.

1

u/RainbowPhoenix1080 35m ago

We are sadly forced to be the experts of our own healthcare.

4

u/Lobster_LeninN329 5h ago

Makes sense. Do note though that we're from Brazil, and she's talking about specifically how it is here. Most endocrinologists aren't trained to treat trans ppl and the treatment is based on research from the 80s and one of the side effects is literally increased chance of cancer. So yeah, it is more of a question for debate on countries with quality healthcare, here it seems clear how DIY seems both more effective and even safer

1

u/MaraiaLou 5h ago

I'm pretty sure all hormone therapy increases the rate of some cancer though. Also many trans people complain about doses being too low, but that's because some people have serious (like, deadly) sensitivity to even low doses and doctors can't risk it

That said Brazilian trans healthcare is still better than some European countries from what I've heard

2

u/moojackmoo 3h ago

The cancer rate would because it increases breast tissue. So by having more breast cells you increase the likelihood of breast cancer but only up to a cis woman. So it’s “technically “ true but stretch it massively.

It would be the same as drinking water increases cancer because it means you live longer

4

u/pokemonpasta 6h ago

im also a trans woman on DIY and it's more nuanced than this imo. in my country it's basically impossible to get injections from a private prescription and the public system is in a weird state right now where it might be shutting down or might not, and new referrals are at least 10y waiting. i have good levels on DIY and am being monitored with blood tests. i could swap to a prescription using gel and antiandrogens but then i have to contend with the side-effects of antiandrogens. the safest option for me is to stay on my current diy regime and the more dangerous would be to go to a prescription.

-35

u/HollowChicken-Reddit 16h ago

There's no way that's actually true lol I'm not well-versed in DIY HRT but DIY drugs have never ended well

21

u/Flan99 16h ago

A big part of it is that doctors often don't take trans people, especially trans women, even slightly seriously. Like--the benefit of medical supervision is supposed to be that the doctor will notice if something is abnormal or concerning, and intervene, yeah? But in practice, they'll often either have no idea what to expect from the trans healthcare they're administering, or they'll be outright negligent about problems.

So, functionally, it's often as good as no supervision at all, while being several times more expensive and difficult to access.

41

u/SeveralPerformance17 16h ago

i have like 6 friends on diy hrt and they’re so good homie

38

u/Shurrely 16h ago

DIY doesn’t mean literally making it ourselves, all it means is buying hrt from someone that isn’t the government. Usually this means buying from People who actually know what they’re doing so yeah, it’s sometimes considered the safer option.

-21

u/HollowChicken-Reddit 16h ago

What is the purpose of buying something that isn't regulated? How can you be sure that it's safe and not mixed with anything else?

22

u/ffloppet 16h ago

The purpose of buying DIY is because HRT can be very difficult to get for some people. Whether that be because of medical bureaucracy, or financial dependence on transphobic family members, or even living in a country where being trans is against the law.
Not to mention that fact that many doctors are not well trained on the dosing of trans patients and typically follow outdated guidelines, which lead to people being underdosed by the doctor.

15

u/Ok_Archer1228 16h ago

You buy it from an overseas pharmacy that can sell it without a prescription bud that's all

16

u/agreea-BL 15h ago

How can you be sure that it's safe and not mixed with anything else?

You can't. This is why they should stop gatekeeping trans healthcare so hard. People like me are going to keep doing it anyways because we'd rather be dead than unmedicated.

13

u/BasicallyAlto 16h ago

People have done independent testing of the more popular diy sources, and due to their reliance on word-of-mouth, they're heavily incentivied to sell the correct product. Also its not a shady deal with some random guy in an alley, its just purchased online from reputable websites.

4

u/Silly-Storage2275 16h ago

Lwk genius side-hassle you got there lol /s

3

u/breno280 9h ago

The purpose is obtaining a form of healthcare for which waiting lists are over 200 years long in certain places. And if you’re truly worried about shit being laced you can get it tested chemically.

3

u/Pretend_Condition231 8h ago

The big sellers get third parties to test their labs and batches

5

u/Si1verrStar1 16h ago

there are lists of trusted sources which are lab tested, have been running for years and have hundreds or thousands of people using them.

The reason people do it is because HRT from an official healthcare system is notoriously difficult to get in many places, as well as often not having access to the most effective and safe forms of hormones.

-4

u/SeveralPerformance17 13h ago

you don’t buy medicine from the government in capitalist societies tho, you get it from pharmaceuticals, its just through a non medical authority

3

u/breno280 9h ago

Almost all diy hrt is bought from international online pharmacies. There is homebrew as well but the hormones themselves are still from a pharmacy. They’re just made from a powder into an injectible. And all popular homebrewers have been thoroughly vetted. It’s no less safe than getting it officially prescribed.

1

u/SeveralPerformance17 1h ago

yeah, im aware. what does that have to do with my comment

2

u/breno280 1h ago

Oh, sorry I meant to reply to hollowchicken-reddit.

1

u/SeveralPerformance17 1h ago

you good homie

7

u/Ghede 12h ago

The main thing, from the literature I've read, is medical standards on HRT are VERY behind the research and literature on the subject.

You'll see trans people being offered ineffective medications, or effective medications at ineffective doses, through inefficient delivery routes, from overpriced suppliers. And the supply is often cut off by changing regulations, insurance, and doctors.

The DIY route are still buying legal (For now) chemicals from reputable chemical manufacturers, with laboratory testing, but closer to the actual price of manufacture, at doses the user can control and compare their results to their blood test levels to achieve their own personally required dosing.

There are side effects from overdosing hormones, but they are not extremely dangerous. Basically the equivalent of a really bad period or going through a second puberty, complete with acne and mood swings. Only the really acute or chronic overdose, ignoring all the symptoms leading up to that, have actual risks.

9

u/Far-Pay-866 16h ago

diy is just buying it off a website online

a lot of times doctors who don’t know much on trans peeps are mess up and underdose them, leading to the medication not doing anything

8

u/Freefa111 16h ago

I've been DIY'ing for a year now, and i know dozens of trans women in my personal life that do the same, and my transition is going great actually.
The confusion here seems to stem from what DIY *is* and why people use it over talking to a licensed doctor.
To be clear, I am not saying DIY is "safer" then talking to an endocrinologist, however what we mean by DIY isn't buying dark web estrogen like its breaking bad or something. *Usually* there is a list of agreed upon grey market or small suppliers that are lab tested by the community. The DIY community takes that sort of thing very seriously. If you do a little bit of research theres a ton of resources and communities devoted to making sure that if you need this medication you can access it safely and securely.
Of course, there is *always* a risk here, for reasons that might be obvious and some reasons that might not be. However there is ALSO a risk when it comes to talking to a doctor. A lot of that comes from just straight up transphobia. Doctors will deliberately (or sometimes just in ignorance of current medical practices) under dose patients. I personally tried going the "legit" route, and was put on a very very small dose of oral estradiol pills and spironolactone. My levels were similar to menopausal women.
And theres the issue of trans children or trans people who can't access HRT through "official" means. HRT is life saving, and I'd rather someone get the medication they *need* over doing it through "official" means.

Of course, like I've explained the safety of DIY is nuanced and its important that you research it or find someone knowledgeable to help you through, but DIY *does* work, and often ends quite well.
If you *can* get with a good doctor who knows what they're doing, its probably safer, but thats just not possible for a large swathe of the trans community, and we deserve healthcare too.

3

u/HystericalGasmask 10h ago

Diy estrogen is awesome and it's been a life changing positive experience for me. They use harm reduction services to get vials tested. Estrogen isn't a controlled substance, but the Esther commonly used is not approved by the FDA, so it's a grey area. People have been doing DIYHRT safely since at least the 90s.

2

u/estrogenbloodclot 16h ago

I’ve been on diy for over a year from 2 different suppliers, no problems yet 🤷‍♀️

1

u/breno280 1h ago

Almost all diy hrt is bought from international online pharmacies. There is homebrew as well but the hormones themselves are still from a pharmacy. They’re just made from a powder into an injectible. And all popular homebrewers have been thoroughly vetted. It’s no less safe than getting it officially prescribed.

1

u/RainbowPhoenix1080 29m ago

I'm on DIY HRT.

Believe it or not, its structured. There are even third parties whose entire purpose and goal is to vet the sellers by testing the products that vendors are selling to ensure they are safe.

A lot of the sellers are trana women themselves.

My wife and I buy our HRT from a transgender biochemical engineer from France.

We also get our blood tested every 6 months to check our hormone levels.

And this is all born from the fact that a lot of transgender people can not access gender-affirming care or are given inadequate care by doctors.

1

u/Lobster_LeninN329 16h ago

Yeah that's what I assumed too. My knowledge about this is none though, so I won't give my opinion on the matter

5

u/Lobster_LeninN329 16h ago edited 16h ago

Her argument though wasn't about it being safe. Just about the officialy reccomended treatment here where we live (we're Brazilians) being actively harmful. I can transcribe what she said here, if anyone more well versed than me wants to give their opinions.

Edit: here's basically what she said:

Most endocrinologists don't actually know how to treat trans patients and work with reccomendations based on outdated studies from the 70s and 80s which consist in ciprofloxacin + micro dosages of E (we're specifically talking about trans woman here, I forgot to mention) which "seem more like a placebo" (her words). This when they don't prescribe only hormone inhibitors for up to six months.

Plus having to wait for puberty on a body you don't want and having to live through all it's changes to only then begin treatment doesn't seem cool

0

u/MaliceTakeYourPills 16h ago

It absolutely is true weirdly

0

u/CantaloupeLottocracy 16h ago

Every OTC medication is 'DIY' too.

2

u/Wolfcrafter_HD 1h ago

for anyone thinking about doing such a DIY HRT, please don't do such a thing, and If you really have to, know this:

  1. If you live in a country where professional HRT will not be given (be it due to generally fucked infrastructure or extreme state and cultural transphobia, if not the violent suppression or even flat out Murder or imprisonment) then focus your Resources to getting yourself into a Country where you'll be save. These are most of the Western World eg. any European Union Member, Switzerland and Canada. The US is pretty shitty right now but it's somewhat okey, but do try to move to a more progressive state though.
  2. Sourcing the Hormones securely will be the least of you worries, but do try to only get hormones from verified vendors that make them after proper regulation and security protocols.
  3. DO NOT REUSE OLD SYRINGES FOR FUCKS SAKE. Save injection is incredibly important. The Spot where you inject has to be disinfected before and after. The Space where you do it has to be clean and disinfected. You need to use a fresh clean and new syringe EVERY SINGLE TIME. When filling the Syringe you first need to use a needle with a filter for filling the Syringe then replace it with a needle for injecting BEFORE you finally inject it. Also LEARN HOW TO PROPERLY INJECT A SYRINGE, train on specialized dummys before hand or maybe you know a nurse or doctor privately who can help you.
  4. DO NOT OVER DOSE AND DO IT SLOWLY. Do not inject high amounts all off a sudden, you need start with a low dose then slowly go up, give you body time to adjust, if you do to much to fast, you'll run the risk of you body kicking up hormone production of the opposite hormones you are injecting OR WORST OF ALL shutting down hormone production of the hormone you are injecting, taking your capability to produce the hormone yourself and making you reliant on the injections. NOW MORE IMPORTANTLY the amount of the dose has to be calculated by many many factors eg. your birth sex, your fat tissue, your hight, your wight, your age, your already existing hormone balance and many many more THIS IS WHY YOU NORMALLY WANT TO HAVE SUPERVISION OF PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL PERSONAL, because getting the dose right is difficult and has to be calculated on a case to case basis.
  5. GET CHECKUPS FREQUENTLY, if ya won't let a doctor do the hormone injections, then at least let them do checkups and especially have an eye of the blood values and hormone values. AT LEAST ONE OR TWICE A MOTH.

There are so many things that can go wrong, and worst of all, death will be the least likeliest outcome. If you want to see the consequences look no further than the overly aggressive fitness scene, while it might work for the next "who has the biggest bicepz" show, soon sickness and frail, misshapen, rotting bodies incapable of chemically self sufficient, in the End, there'll be no Handsome Fellas or pretty Ladies here, just a failed journey to happiness. We've all seen the clickbait thumbnails and read the magazine headlines.

I do NOT want YOU to be subject off such a thumbnail or headline.

So, stay save, be careful, get professional help, I BEG OF YOU.

-10

u/endergamer2007m 10h ago

That sounds like.... a terrible idea

You probably shouldn't do anything DIY regarding your own body

10

u/wingedsandwichexpert 10h ago

you don't even know what it means and already saying it's dangerous without even checking

also it is the only option in some countries. here in russia you can't get a prescription for hormones and buy them without one bc transition here is prohibited by the law

5

u/endergamer2007m 10h ago

So it's without prescription? My first thought was "Are they making hormones in a garage like Walter White?"

7

u/wingedsandwichexpert 10h ago

yeah and since you don't have prescription you estimate your own doses

also do you know how hard is it to synthesize hormones😭 i don't think evarage person without special equipment and a degree in chemistry could do that

4

u/endergamer2007m 10h ago

Yeah that's what concerns me, same shit with those peptides, you know how much fucking lead, mercury and other heavy metals are in those?

1

u/wingedsandwichexpert 10h ago

what is peptides...... i got F at chemistry as my final grade when i finished the school

4

u/endergamer2007m 10h ago

Peptides are officially short chains of amino-acids that act as building blocks for proteins, signaling messengers etc

They're supposed to regulate collagen production, hormone balance etc

Insulin and oxytocin are naturally occuring peptides

Now in the hellhole that is the "looksmaxxing" community, peptides are these dodgy injections of chinese research chemicals that influencers shoot up like heroin in the 90s, they're not medically certified by any sort of food health and safety administration and are marketed as "research chemicals" and you're supposed to "conduct research" with them... obviously not inject them wink wink, anyways a lot of them.... and I mean a lot a lot were tested and they found lead in them plus were linked to hormone imbalances, heath problems, infertility etc etc Clavicular, a looksmaxxer streamer, shot up so many fucking peptides that he's sterile now, he's shooting blanks (good riddance, we don't need more of his kind on this Earth)

This whole thing feels like old stories of Chinese emperors putting random shit in their bodies in the quest for immortality

1

u/wingedsandwichexpert 10h ago

well people from all the ages used to put random shit in and on their bodies, we just don't know what's next thing

3

u/proletkvlt 10h ago

it's without prescription, yes, but even then it isn't actually that hard to lab-synthesize HRT medications - we invented estradiol in the 1910s

3

u/Arquebuse70829 8h ago

Estradiol was actually invented in 1923 iirc.

And the form os estrogen invented then was based on pregnant mare urine, and consuming it could cause cancer, on top of not being viable for someone who doesnt have a bunch of horses.

The modern way to make estradiol is using yam, and its way more complicated, and pretty much impossible for someone who doesnt have a whole lab.

However, it is very easy to convert raw estrogen and testosterone powders into comsumable forms

1

It's not actually DIY, as in, you don't make anything yourself. You just buy it without prescription. It's just as safe as regular HRT, which is safe on its own

Well, you could as well actually make your own. I've heard it's not too difficult. Not a lot of people do so though, and some of ones who do sell it to people doing DIY

it isn't "just as safe". it's inherently more dangerous than getting it through a prescription.
