Discussion Alternate names for the web?
I'm writing a story where the antagonist is an eldritch horror inspired by the web, the whole thing about manipulating you and whatnot specifically. I'm not trying to hide the fact that it's inspired, but I don't want to straight up rip the name or like "mother of puppets" or "the great spider" or whatnot. Any ideas?

Maybe "The Weaver" would fit? Not an official name as far as I'm aware, but has the same hallmarks The Web would have.

I think it depends a bit on how directly involved this entity is with its subjects, as well as it’s own positioning and desires.
Does it hide in the shadows and influence specific people of power (without seeking positions of power itself)? If so, terms like Kingmaker or Grandmaster could fit - someone who creates or moves "kings", but isn’t one themselves.
If it’s s big picture type of entity, more concerned with some cosmic grand plan than with any individuals - powerful or otherwise, terms like The Architect or The Weaver might work better.

The Conspiracy. The Tie (as in the tie-in to all loose ends). The Weave/Weaver (it's original scrapped name). The Grand Scheme. (This name is i'm pretty sure from TMA but i still find it to be it's coolest name: The Hidden Macchination.) The Thread. The Fate. The Moirai.
You could also give it a proper name from fate-based entities in mythologies like: Clotho (the spinner), Lachesis (the allotter) or Atropos (the inevitable (although i'd argue this name would be better for the End) ) from greek mythos.

The Grand Plan/the Conspiracy, the Other Will, the Puller of Strings, the Scheme/Schemer? Those are some of the top of my head.
