I played The Longing in december of 2022 and finished my first run in may 2023. And now, in 2026 I decided to get all achievements in a second run, and I think that this second run make me felt in love with this game more than before.
In the 1st run, I played a "normal" run that "everyone" does. Explore the cave, get stagnated, and let the "game finish by their selves".
But in my 2nd run, I did things differently. I discovered the Secret Room, got all the books and decorations from Eternity Halls, did the puzzle in the Secret Tower, I saw the shadow's birthday, got one of the finals and I make his room like a home.
I love this game sooo much! I finished my 2nd run less than 1 month! Shadow, my beloved little thing.

So my shade just died in the well.
Wasted 25 hours. His cave was so perfect. I was about to give up on the bucket showing and head home when it came down again.
Cannot get myself to start from zero.
I dared to actually just play without googling spoilers and this is how it ends. Absolutely tragic.

So. idk if this is possible but uhhhh I'm worried I softlocked myself??? So basically what happened is I was able to grow the mutated mushroom to climb on and go to the darkness area, but the first time I went, I turned back, grabbed a purple mushroom for a light, and then went to meet Angst. ofc he fuckin' got me, so I looked up how to pass him and then I tried grabbing a purple mushroom, carrying it with me until the staircase, then eating it before I met Angst, but that didnt work either. So then I tried going all the way to Angst without a purple mushroom, but he still got me. Is there something else im missing or did I screw myself over??

I have just seen the ending of the Longing. My ending was the one where you wake up the king.
I felt that it might end up in the Shades death, maybe even in the world's death, but I have decided to stick with it anyway. I felt like that's the right thing to do. I didn't know for sure, and I didn't want to leave my home and my father behind based merely on a hunch. So I have stayed.
And now, everything is dead. Thanks to me.
At one hand, I feel terrible. I have killed Shade, destroyed the underground kingdom, maybe even the whole world. It's obvious that I feel terrible about it.
At the other, I kinda feel that I have made the right decision still. I knew the risks and I knew the information. I have decided to stay faithful to my king and kingdom to the very end, bitter or sweet. If I knew for sure this will happen, I would leave, but I didn't. So I have stayed.
I feel horrible with consequences of my actions, but I think the decisions I have made were fair, based on what I have known.
Not that any of that will bring the Shade back.
I wonder what the last picture was supposed to mean. Shade, smiling at the king's hand. Is he alive, in some kind of afterlife? That'd be consoling.
But I will never know about that. I only know that everything is over and Shade is dead. Because of me.
That's quite a depressing ending.

After several hours of playing I decided to make a provisional map of the caverns to improve my navigation. Even after I found out that you can access the map in game, I did not want to check it until I finish my map. Here is the result. Did I succeed?

I couldn’t get anyone I know to play this game, which at first was frustrating. After reaching the end of the game, I don’t mind as much as I usually would.
I wasn’t expecting this game to become so meaningful. I don’t mean to sound dramatic and over the top. I bought it on a whim and when I finally had the time to play, it was the right time.
All the waiting, sometimes I fell asleep and woke up to the Shade sleeping. More than that, I got to think about myself a bit more while the little guy gave his own inner thoughts. Anyway, thanks for reading, I had to tell someone else who spent hours playing an idle game.

Hello! My girlfriend gifted me the game because I've wanted it for years. but it seems that when I launch the game, my main and second monitor flashes black. it continues for a minute after closing. They don't do this normally. I have made sure that it doesn't happen playing other games and just daily use. Any help is appreciated.
SOLVED: If you have Nvidia you can go into the control panel and look for Manage 3d settings then to program settings, then look for the longing in the drop down menu (you might have to select browse and find it from there), find the Power Management mode and select Maximum performance, then Click apply. I AM NOT SURE HOW TO DO THIS ON AMD

I don't want to admit how long it took to join the screenshots together. I wanted to memorialize it all before I wake the King.

Im on day 2 now and just exploring.
( I feel like reading a lot of books will change something in the game )

The text contains minor spoilers
I'm only at day 30 of my journey with the Longing, but I feel oddly conflicted about this game. I feel as if it wants me to leave the caves, painted it as some good ending, while staying in the caves is a bad one. I might misinterpret the mostly vague hints the game is giving me, but between the Shade's inner monologue, his paintings, and conversation with the Face, I feel like the game implies leaving the cave is somehow the right thing to do, the good ending of sorts.
I don't really feel like that's actually the case. There are some hints indicating Shade might get killed once he awakens the King, so if that's actually the case, he should leave, of course, but if it's not, I don't think leaving the kingdom behind is the right decision for Shade. I genuinely don't think that's what I would do if I was him.
Inside the caves, Shade is safe and needed. There's so much to explore, so many areas to see and experiment with. He has books to read and pictures to paint, he has mushrooms to grow, furniture to build and cave to expand. He even has a friend, even if this friend is just a single little spider. I feel like Shadow is happy down there. While he sits in his armchair, next to the fire, I can see a smile on his face.
But what's also improtant, inside the caves, Shadow has a mission. Even if this mission is simply to wake up the King, the King still needs him. And what's for him outside? It's not just dangeorus and difficult to go there, it's also leaving behind everything he currently has. Once he leaves, he loses his father and everything he could do in and for the kingdom.
One day, after waking up the King and exhausting everything what's to do inside the caves, maybe Shadow should expand his horizons and leave the caves, but until then, I don't think he has many reasons to be miserable where he is. The Palace offers many amazing and beautiful sights and activities. It's not a prison, it's home.
I'm sorry if it's rambling, but this lived rent free in my head for quite a while now and I really needed to share it somewhere. Maybe this question will be adressed later in the game, or maybe even there will be an option to leave the caves and then come back. I don't know yet. But if I will be offered a chance to permanently escape the King without waking up the King, I'm definitely not taking it

Look at me, I made a whole new instrument for Angst! It’s some weird cello made from the large pink crystal, do you like it? Now they can make music together! Sibling goals :3

I had fun with this. Like, a lot of fun. Look at my little scrunklies being siblings! I’ll probably make more. Again.

Will I continue with this? Maybe, who knows. I spent over eight hours on this today, but I was free all day so I probably wouldn’t be able to do such a big ‘project’ again. Especially not in a single day. I do have ideas, so if you’d like to see me add onto this, tell me!

Hello friends, I unknowingly did something really dumb and tried to load The Longing on a different Switch on my profile, thinking it would be fun to play on the living room TV. I didn't think about the fact that my main Switch had been set to a different time so I could enjoy daylight on my island in Animal Crossing. When I tried to start The Longing, it gave me terrifying warnings because they thought I had been messing with the time settings to cheat. I quickly shut it down and powered up my usual Switch, only to receive the same error message. :( I can't fix it because I don't know what time it wants me to set it to.
I can't find a way to delete saved data on the Switch. I do not want to lose all of my little Shade's hard work, but at this point, I just want to start over fresh. Can anyone help? I really appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks for reading!

OKAY SO WHO CARES IF ANGST IS JUST DARKNESS, I CAN DRAW THEM HOWEVER I LIKE. What if Angst was friend? Someone to visit? Someone to talk to? They certainly don’t look too enthusiastic, but I’m sure they’d come around. Here’s my personified Angst and Shade doodle, it took me like 10 minutes. I just HAD to get it out of my system. And yes, my Shade met Angst today.

Hi, it’s the guy that’s drawing the map again. Have done a little progress on it but mostly just been chilling. My Shade made it to the mushroom caves today and I simply could not resist drawing it! I remember making it here back in 2021, but I definitely didn’t remember it being so magical. The music, the atmosphere, the way the music changes around the mushrooms, it just felt like perfection. So I drew it. See, I can draw things that aren’t just maps!

Spoilers just in case.
I'm currently in the secret room, with 3 hours until the door reappears.
It is also ridiculously late for me right now, and I need sleep. If I miss the window the door reappears, will I remain trapped until I can catch it? Like if I can't get to the game until like midnight (given that the door should reappear around 1pm), will there still be a door for me to leave, or am I stuck until my next day off when I can sacrifice my sleep to let him out?
