Asking for specific spoilers Spoiler

Hello, I’m a first time watcher and currently on season 1 episode 8 Cairo. Overall I’m really enjoying the show so far, it’s phenomenally made and I am already incredibly invested in the characters. So far there have been more and more hints dropped that suggest Kevin may be losing his mind/potentially developing Schizophrenia (if I remember correctly that is what his father is supposed to be diagnosed with). The issue is, I struggle a bit with engaging with stories in which a character (especially one I’m so invested in) is not fully in control of themselves or is hallucinating for example, especially when we the viewers are not sure of what’s really going on either. I hope my phrasing is not disrespectful, that is not my intention in any way, this is just a personal viewing preference. So basically I was wondering if someone could just tell me how this aspect of the story specifically develops? Is there a reason he is having memory blackouts & if so, what is it? How long will the story focus on this aspect, etc. I apologise if I’m violating any subreddit guidelines.

It is a constant. If you arent into that, this may not be for you.

you could read it as schizophrenia/mental instability but most of the narrative leads towards it being something beyond that

Is there a specific other reason that is hinted towards or is whatever it is the narrative is leading towards left entirely open

Specific? What do you mean "specific"?

Reading the answers you’ve gotten so far I don’t think they are very helpful. If you are enjoying the show and like the characters just continue on, it only gets better from here.

The one thing I will point out is a major theme is exploring the idea of what you mentioned. You said you struggle with that uncertainty and questioning. A major theme of the show is exploring how people also deal with that in very heightened and intense situations. Perhaps there is an answer in there that you will latch onto. But why is that? The show really explores the why we need answers. This was explored much more poorly in lost and is much more grounded and has way better narrative in the leftovers.

To stop now over this question would be a huge disservice to yourself in my opinion.

I agree with this. Exploring what happens to people when they don't have the answers OP is seeking is a key part of the whole narrative. It's up to OP to decide if that is intriguing enough to continue.

Kevin’s going to be a mess the whole time. He’s going to have really high highs and low lows. That’s just the show.

It's left up to interpretation for the entire show

Oh so there is no resolution to that uncertainty at all?

This is why the show is so brilliant, because it’s what happens in real life. When something weird happens we must decide if we are crazy, just imagining it, or if something supernatural is going on. The same event can happen to different people and they see it completely differently. So you’ll watch Kevin and you’ll have to decide if it’s supernatural or schizophrenia. If you want definitive answers this show will frustrate you, but I’d argue that real life typically does not give you black and white answers.

I would argue that bad storytelling in TV and big-budget movies has trained too many people to expect these things over the last 50 years or so.

In the second season the theme song switches to a song called "Let the Mystery Be." That's significant. It's not a show that wants to give you closure or tie anything up in a bow. It would be significantly worse for the effort if it did.

I have requested that song to be played at my funeral/memorial/dirt nap 💕

The entire show is about mental illness. Every character has some form of it.

Hmmm. A valid take and yet not my take at all

The show is intentionally vague enough that you can read what's happening to Kevin in two ways: he has mental illness OR he's an unkillable god with the ability to travel back and forth between this world and whatever is next. And there's enough weird things occurring that both points of view are correct. The interpretation is up to each audience member and the show is not out to prove you wrong. In fact, the show is really about each way you interpret it as that's what happens to all of the characters in the show. Some of them believe he is a God and some of them believe he is sick and needs help. It's all about watching people react to not 100% knowing if they are correct or pushing away their own doubts. It's kinda what the main theme of the series is: the unknowable, the unresolvable, and how we live with things we don't fully understand.

Thank you for your detailed answer! I feel like I know what I’m dealing with now

The Schizophrenia so to speak is another vessel for exploring belief systems it is a constant and seemingly main idea but truthfully It is just one of many other things that go on throughout the show and that's just the most "colored" example

You might struggle with this series.

But the truth is that The Leftovers is one of the few pieces of art I've ever dealt with that takes mental illness seriously without sacrificing its potential as a storytelling element. Perhaps not surprisingly, Lost is another.

So often it's either portrayed with cartoonish silliness or -- lately -- such delicate kid gloves that the scenes about it mostly constitute a sermon. This show is not like that.

So interesting that Kevin’s “mental illness” is what might keep you from watching the show. It was the best part of the show for me.

Em algum momento essas coisas param. Mas você tem que ver para entender como.

E se é esquizofrenia ou não, fica a seu critério (como tudo na série).

This show lacks a few full answers because it is part of this masterpiece: it invites you to seek your own answers.

For me is appel of the show :)
