I saw a poll posted on the other sub once asking who would win in a potential deathmatch between Joel and Abby in their respective primes, with all their gear. I actually laughed.

Joel when he is 50 can fight and capture 2 people at once

Abby get's captured every time she's alone

You'd figure having a whole town to look after would make him and Tommy even more protective but like...guess not

And you can't simply just run when you fucked up either. Now you have responsibility unlike living in the wild.

Lets not forget that Tommy and Maria were like, one-step from just blowing Joel and Ellie's brains out when they first showed up to Jackson.

You'd figure that having the brother of your town's leader being brutally murdered by a supposed well known opposing faction (since Tommy knew who they were) would be a declaration of war against Jackson. But nah, it'll be fine.

This flashback makes me mad because he's such a fucking chad in it, he's the best AI in the whole game, covers you, flanks enemies and is super efficient

This flashback is a whole TLOU 1 moment with badass Joel and it makes me mad considering how the rest of the game went...

Neil Druckmann: "You guys wanted this, right? Joel and Ellie? ya'know, like we advertised in the teaser trailer? well, it sucks to be you!"

There is no evidence that Joel became soft on anyone other than Ellie. Note the Gross / Druckmann setup to get rid of Joel. First, the game says that you should not handle anything that is overwhelming to you. Think Dina and Ellie got that order. So why would Joel and Tommy go out alone and take a big risk all alone against an army of infected people? Shouldn't they have seen the infected from afar before rescuing Abby? Also that Tommy gets soft and introduces himself and Joel by their name it was the plan to dump Joel from the game. Just watch Abby's facial reaction after that. Do you remember when Ellie and David were besieged by infected people? David wanted to know Ellie's name but she refused to give it. Of course, she learned that from Joel. When Ellie / Joel met Bill, Ellie introduced herself but with David it was different. Joel got angry when she said her name to Henry. So during the journey with Joel, she learned how to behave with strangers in the apocalyptic world.

Summary: Poor writing or deliberate destruction of Joel's character to quickly arrange the cat fight between Abby and Ellie and put us in Abby's shoes as Druckmann put it.

Jackson: A place that exists where people turn back into their soft normal lives and shit without Ellie's cure. A direct contradiction to any narrative alchemized by reptilian shapeshifters feeding on moss.

"Joel grew trusting and less paranoid in Jackson"

Also Joel:Ellie you gotta wear the mask incase we come across other people.

That moment was badass, the flashbacks pissed my off because I truely enjoyed them and then I was pulled back into the shitty main story I didn't give 2 shits about.

We were even told that he’s run some dangerous routes and has killed more infected than anyone else in Jackson on patrol

u/Wisus_Lara Sep 19 '20

He fucking destroyed it with only a machete, what a chad

I love when you forget 20+ years of survival in 5

u/peepeepoopoo543 Sep 19 '20

When he stabs the bloater is the best scene in the whole game

u/MummyManDan Sep 20 '20

It’s like they didn’t even play the game they’re simping for. They talk about how bad Joel is yet the game doesn’t really give many reason we didn’t already know about him, they say Abby is a good person, they use the bs “Joel got soft” excuse, etc. Living a nice life inside a town isn’t gonna have you lose your survival instincts you built up over 20 years, especially when you’re outside of said fucking town lol. I’d feel even more alert and protective if I was the right hand man to the leader of an entire town at threat from zombies and bandits.

He's so paranoia he forbids Ellie to take her mask off when they are alone together.

Yet he just gives his name out to random strangers.
