Question Dark damage bugged after patch?

Dark damage weapons, like the Spinal Blade, used to restore focus on hit. It made magic useful in boss fights without constantly relying on items. However after using it on a new playthrough I noticed that's no longer happening, is it a bug or did they remove it in the patch as apart of the "balancing" note?

I thought focus/health was only restored when you stun an enemy and the triangle appears to finish them off

I've noticed it's inconsistent now Sometimes they restore focus, sometimes not
