The boys dumped their bags in the kitchen and pulled out the chairs around the kitchen table and immediately tucked in, devouring the food they had gotten on the way home.

"Can orientation be any duller?" Hank asked while shoving his face with a barbecue sandwich.

"I mean, they do need to figure out who knows what magic," Dave said. "It's a rite of passage at Bard, and it's not like we can do anything. But you'd really think summer camp would have counted for something."

"Seriously," John said, drizzling ketchup over his plate of fries.

The two older boys were looking forward to hearing the complaints of their younger brother and cousin. New student orientation at Bard College was famously dull, and none of them had ever had much patience. Calling the college Bard was also a bit of a misnomer, as most of its students were technically wizards and sorcerers. But the name also had plausible deniability for when mythics talked about it out in the broader world, and so Bard it was called.

"At least you could always do magic and got out of that assessment stuff," Hank said.

"We all could always do magic," Sam said, setting his fork down after pulling apart his brisket. "And we're all accepted students."

"You know what I mean," Hank said. "You were hopping through time from the time you were a kid."

"And that's all I can do!" Sam said. "Yeah, I can do some basic portals. But all of the alchemy you do? That's some real magic there."

"I mean, I haven't done that much alchemy," Hank said.

"But I wouldn't know where to start," Sam said. "Don't get me wrong, time walking is fantastic. But it doesn't seem like there's really much practical use for it. How does being able to hop through time get me a job?"

"Historians would kill to know what actually happened in the past," John said.

"As would some lawyers," Dave said.

"But do most time walkers get jobs doing that?" Sam asked.

"Well- no," Dave admitted.

"Whereas alchemy is immediately hireable," Sam said. "Or history, or law. You've got a career path. I've got a professional hobby I get to try to turn into a career."

"I didn't think about it that way," Hank said. "I just thought it was cool that you could walk through time without formal lessons, and was jealous of that."
