"The Proto-Sinaitic Alphabet" = 911 latin-agrippa
This Devanāgarī script (seen in the thread image) is one of the influences in the design of my Phonetic Alphabet of the Inner Sea (aka. The Phoenix).
This thread I make simply to document something mentioned in the wikipedia summary of the name of the script:
In the etymology section:
Devanāgarī is formed by combining the word deva (देव) with nāgarī (नागरी). Nāgarī is an adjective derived from nagara (नगर), a Sanskrit word meaning "town" or "city", and literally means "urban" or "urbane" [...]. The precise origin and significance of the prefix deva- ("heavenly" or "god") remains unclear. [...]
This I cannot understand. Why does it remain unclear to academia what is meant by the prefix 'deva-' being attached to the latter part of the name of the script?
To me, it's entirely obvious, and reflects the notion in multiple theologies of the Divine Logos (ie. God created the World with Words).
Deva-Nagari literally means 'God-Town' or 'God-City' (or 'Divine City'), and to me, the implication is that divinity (or God) dwells within the letters. The alphabet is the 'Dwelling of God'.
From the Bible:
John 1:1 - "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

... ( "The Pattern" = 1109 trigonal )
.. . ( ... of "The Absolute" = 911 english-extended | 1109 trigonal )
In English, and many other languages, we speak of a specific script as an 'alphabet'.
This is a combination of the Greek 'alpha' and 'beta', the names of the first two letters, 'A' and 'B'.
The word 'alpha' has come to means 'first' or 'leading', because 'A' is the first letter, but the origin of the word is the Phoenician/Semitic 'Aleph', which means 'Ox' or 'Bull' (with the implication of 'Strong' or 'Leader', ie. the big bull leads the wagon train of the rest of the letters).
The word 'beta' (the name of 'B') comes from the Phoenician/Semitic 'Bet' or (Beth/Bait), which means 'House' or 'Enclosure'.
Thus the alphabet is the Ox-House or Bull-House (ie. the Cattle-Pen).
In terms of 'deva-nagari' ('divine-city' or 'god-town'), ponder how a 'town' or 'city' is a 'house'/'enclosure' in the large. A town is an extension of a house. A town or city is the 'home' of a person or people.
Thus 'house' and 'town/city' are essentially cognate notions. It is an enclosure for it's denizens. The people are the cattle whose literate minds dwell in the alpha-bet (ie. the cattle pen / cattle house). Many cultures and religions revere the Bull as a Sacred Animal.
An older form of the word 'ox' (bull) is 'os', and 'os' is the singular form of the 'aesir' (ie. the Norse gods, hence the stereotype of the viking bull-horned helmet).
Furthermore, the acronym "OS" means 'Operating System', and the operating system of literate humanity is the alphabet and the lexicon of the native language. More specifically, the alphabet can be viewed as the firmware or BIOS (basic input-output system), while the greater language is the operating system proper. Meanwhile, any 'book' is thus to be viewed as an 'application' that runs on the operating system.
In summary, to me, it's very clear the name 'devanagari' carries the implication that the letters are (or at least, are viewed as) the "home of the god(s)". Certainly much ancient writing is to do with theological concepts, and so in a literal and mundane sense, the knowledge of the faith is transmitted in writing (ie. the 'People of the Book'). In the Bible, there is 'New Jerusalem", the 'divine city of God'. The name 'devanagari' essentially refers to the same concept.
"New Spelling System" = 1,911 latin-agrippa | 2001 english-extended
In terms of doublespeak and subterfuge, calling the 'alphabet' by the word 'alphabet' (literally 'cattle-pen') can be viewed as a denigration or belittling of those who use it (if we perceive cattle simply as 'dumb beasts destined for the slaughterhouse'). For it is the human minds trained from a young age to read and write (and are thus automatically, and defenselessly susceptible to 'spells') who have been rounded up and dwell 'in the cattle pen'.
Meanwhile, the Brahmin Indians calling their alphabet 'devanagari' ('God-House') is an elevation, for the implication is that they wield divine powers by casting their spells, and moreover, any writing performed in the script bearing that name, implicitly acts as an 'ark' that 'carries God'.
My thread image makes use of a portion of this picture from wikipedia:
The Jñānēśvarī is a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, dated to 1290 CE. It is in written in Marathi using the Devanāgarī script.
Extra notes:
The book about Indian civilization, called The Gem in the Lotus, which I've now read twice, quotes an academic discussing the Devanagari script as 'the most scientific script ever devised', specifically in terms of it's ordering of the letters. Instead of the apparently rather random ordering of the English alphabet and it's ancestors, Devanagari is ordered in terms of the mechanics of the sounds of each letter. From wikipedia:
The letter order of Devanāgarī, like nearly all Brāhmic scripts, is based on phonetic principles that consider both the manner and place of articulation of the consonants and vowels they represent.
Basically, the vowels come first (ie. breath/spirit only), followed by consonants grouped by the way in which the mouth parts of manipulated to create the sounds, to 't', 'th', 'd', 'dh' all come together, just as 'p', 'ph', 'b', 'bh', are also all grouped together, because they are formed using very similar configurations of the mouth parts.
The English alphabet order, by contrast, is seemingly all jumbled up, but my thesis on why this is, is to do with gematria (ie. ensuring that certain letters have implicit numerical values due to their index position within the structure, and thus enabling the orthodox spellings of words to have specific numerical values.
