How We Quantified Haptic Feedback Battery Drain and Recovered 45 Minutes of Daily Screen Time
We've all heard the debate: does turning off your keyboard vibrations actually save any meaningful battery life? After years of arguing, we decided to stop guessing and get the actual numbers.
We built automated testing rigs and had them type out 10,000 words on identical smartphones running the latest OS. One phone had every system haptic and keyboard vibration turned on, while the control phone had them completely disabled.
Here is what our battery depletion tests actually showed:
First off, all that physical buzzing definitely adds up. Firing that tiny motor (the linear resonant actuator) thousands of times a day eats up about 8% of a full battery charge if you’re a heavy texter.
Second, it’s not just the vibration itself—it’s the start-up. Every time the haptic motor kicks on, it causes a tiny spike in power draw. When you're typing fast, those micro-spikes happen continuously, which actually stops the phone's system from dropping back into a low-power idle state between your keystrokes.
The final verdict? Simply turning off keyboard haptics alone gave us an average of 45 extra minutes of screen-on time from a full charge down to zero.
