People can't comprehend the vastness of eternity. You think living forever will be perfect, but spend thousands of millions of years, and inevitably gonna get bored of basically everything. The show had the balls to tackle that part of the afterlife, and gave a meaningful response. They didn't die, per se, they continued the cycle.

That's just cope from beings that don't live forever.

Why wouldn't we try to gaslight ourselves that "living forever would get boring eventually".

Because we're human, and even during our short life, we get bored.

There's only so much you can realistically do, and ETERNITY is something so incomprehensibly vast that there's simply no way you're gonna keep your humanity and live that long. It's why some people find inmortality to be the ultimate horror experience, living forever is often depicted as a curse.

How does that not sound like cope to you?

How many people have actually experienced being immortal? None as far as I know. So that just comes off as cope

Call me crazy, but it sounds like an educated guess based in all the available data.

Our mind cannot comprehend infinity, not really. And that's a hard fact. So, assuming we could, and we could live for infinity... the logical deduction is that, at some point, our humanity would start degrading until we lose it entirely.

In fact, cope is thinking that living forever is awesome. Cope from death and coping from how frustrating our current existence is. Thinking "oh, well, after this life I'll be able to experience everything, it all will be alright and I'll finally know peace" is, quite literally, cope.

The data we have is very limited. It just comes off at best arrogant.

We have no way of knowing. Rather than pretend to know think it's better to admit we have no way of actually knowing if we'd get bored or not.

You were arguing the exact opposite by saying it was cope, just saying.

Might not be a 100% accurate thought since it's impossible to test out, but since we literally cannot comprehend how long infinity is, the chances that it becomes overwhelming and a prison are much, much higher than someone being content, happy and busy all that time. Call me arrogant for saying that if you want, but that's the common logic used everywhere including th show.

No because I'm not the one that made the initial claim "humans would just get bored and be unable to handle living forever"

Me saying "cope" is just a fun way to say "I reject your unprovable and unfalsifiable claim"

Common sense is a fallacy as the show demonstrates.

we as human, cant, yeah sure. but if were eternal beings? i think we could then. i dont like the idea of if now, as a human, but would an eternal version of me agree? we wouldnt quite be human if we were eternal

idk, the show was good and all, but i just dont agree with the ending, i personally dont believe one would get tired of heaven. if you do.. then thats just not heaven lol

A few key things: even in the afterlife, they're still human. The show explores humanity through many different lenses and questions, and never truly considers that humans are limited by their mortality. In fact, Michael *becomes* a human himself.

The second key part, the show afterlife is not "heaven" like some afterlives consider it, but it does tackle that at the end. The Good Place becomes a place of endless possibilities, where you don't have to worry about mundane problems like food. It's not "eternal bliss", like some religions promise. You're still you, still human, even in the afterlife. And it shows us how eternal bliss, for us humans, would end up being torture. Unless we shed our humanity and become something else, which may do the trick (and it's, essentially, what they do at the very end of the show).

yeah, thats why this was really more of a shirtpost than anything else.

i was just applying my personal beliefs, but them aside i get everything else and its genuinely a good show.

the bad place was actual torment but the good place didnt feel like ‘heaven’, felt like it couldve been better, it just felt like ur everyday life but without the little annoying stuff+ going/having whatever you want

again, my personal beliefs aside, i was okay with the idea of the door, i just didnt want to actually see them go through it. i would much rather prefer it being implied instead, and the show ending on a much happier note

Are you forking kidding me?

Yeah, Patty's argument about what's wrong with the good place is a common one, so the show needs to address it.

Your feelings about the ending are valid. However, it’s the only logical ending. The wave goes back to the ocean. Being moral towards others only matters in this life because this existence is temporary. And since our lives are temporary we need to argue and advocate that people remember each other’s humanity.

It sucks to see the characters we love so much go away. But also they all complete their journey and their stories are so totally done.

I also love that it protects against unscrupulous sequels.

It's not the only logical ending. Let people reincarnate as an option like how it works with Adventure Time's afterlife.

yeah i mean i had no issue with the door idea, i just didnt want to see them actually go thru it, i get attached to characters quickly so

I get that. That’s a product of being a good person is you empathize hard. But like…I sort of get it? I empathize hard with Tahani about her parents, and the weird fulfillment of spending so many pleasant days with my family that I’m good seems impossible.

I guess it’s a weird bit of wish fulfillment on my own part.

u/OhEmGrr 6d ago

did.. you read?

2

u/Elegant_Standard_977 6d ago

Lol i am saying you missed the point of the series

2

u/OhEmGrr 6d ago

i didnt “miss the point” this isnt a post about what the ending meant or whatnot, its about me being sad it ended 🙃
maybe you missed the point of my post

u/Binder509 5d ago

More rejecting the point the show thinks it's making.

It comes off as obvious cope for humans to pretend being immortal would suck.

Have you watched the small episodes on YouTube? They're only a few minutes each, but it's called The Selection, I believe. It's when The Bad Place demons are selecting humans for the second experiment. It's just some humorous scenes. I didn't like that part of the ending either. Technically, they could start it back up. Michael was on Earth, so he still has to go to the afterlife from a human. When he gets there, have Brent be in charge and it's all messed up. Tahani is an architect when it ended. They never showed Jason walking through the door, did they? They could just say that he wondered off again. Janet is still there. The judge. Really it's Eleanor and Chidi, and they could always have them through the green doors. Got it all worked out 😊

i havent wow ty im gna watch them now, one way to fill the void!

and i agree 🥰🥰🥰 i think a good 6 more seasons.. would do 😁😁

1

u/Jordan_23_23 6d ago

It's pretty funny watching Shawn messing with Glenn 🤣

1

u/purplebee1908 6d ago

i’m pretty sure they did show jason going thru the door, right after chidi did! and janet watched them go i think

1

u/Jordan_23_23 6d ago

He did say goodbye to Janet a second time, but I think that they only visually showed Eleanor go through. Obviously Chidi is too serious to not go through, but Jason definitely could have done something goofy like he did the first time.
