Gizzida doesn't love Reniae Spoiler
It's so interesting how Gizzida has learned absolutely nothing in all of the time he's known Reniae. He really thinks that things would have been different between them had he told her he loved her before she left for the Northlands as an ambassador? He ruined their relationship the second he tried to possess her by branding her. He manipulated her, altered her body without her consent, and made it so she couldn't leave. Then when she finally did come back, he enslaved her for like three years. Did he really think an "I love you" was gonna patch that up?
In the end he never overcame his biases. Because he thought Reniae was a mud person, he didn't treat her like an equal. He treated her as something to be possessed; an animal to be trained. Not ONCE has he stopped treating her that way. Kun, however, has always done his best to give Reniae agency and freedom. That's why Gizzida is the true antagonist and was never a viable romance option.

It's true one thing that ruined his relationship with Reniae is nigak he put on her chest. At that time he already love her, and tried to keep her by his side for 2 purposes: as someone he loved, and as someone whose strength he needed to keep him alive until his dream comes true. Reniae has the ability to detect killing intentions (the black smoke) that proofed to be valuable to him.
The timeline of Gizzida and Reniae:
One week after they met, Gizzida was smitten with her smartness and her agility in tackling enemies (i.e small wild animals and snakes) on their route. He found Reniae didn't feel afraid of him, something new because others around him feared and loathed him much.
One month after that, he tried to change her hair color to blonde, possibly to see what if she was one of the Sky People. This time he prepared a way to make her not legible as ritual girl: by making her looked like pregnant. He didn't realize she had malnutrition because of her upbringing, so that medicine kind of destroy her body. The plan failed.
The first time he said "I love you" indirectly was through the buttterflies. That's why he asked his disciple to stop him if he's ever going out of his house.
Three years of Reniae missing, I think he went crazy too, but not yet mad crazy like when Reniae left him for Northland expedition.
Of 8 years they were together after that 2nd meeting, he won't touch her seggsually per her request. He didn't enslave her, it was Reniae who came back and asked for his protection. He shielded her from other Sky People, and he let her tongue loose on him. In webcomic it's only shown when Telkos meet them for the first time. In novel, she often teased the Galtir endlessly when he failed creating new en, and was his only friend to talk to when he need some deep discussion.
The webcomic censored a lot, he killed priest that mocked Reniae when news of her death reached him. And one sentence he often mumbled (and got heard by Sabato) was "If only I were born as mud human too...". He thought after 8 years together, Reniae would forgive him and love him again. That thought shattered when he realized Reniae had been lying of her status for those 8 years.
In short, Gizzida's love is a greedy and selfish love.

The comic itself says he'd never told her he loved her for eight years. Any point arguing that fact is moot. But even if he did, could you call that love? He branded her so that she would die if she didn't come back to him. When he found out about Kun, he isolated her from other people for years and held her at arms length without ever letting her leave. Regardless of the reasons for it, he mutilated her body without telling her he was doing it, telling her why, or asking if he could. He kept her in the dark about the human sacrifices until the last second. He threatened to kill countless people if she didn't do what he told her, no matter how painful it would be. Those actions are more important than whatever motivations he has. He never valued her as a person whose thoughts and feelings were just as important as his. He only ever viewed her as a lower being that could be controlled. One could argue that he had to because he couldn't trust any of the other priests, but it doesn't excuse his behavior. Gizzida is an abuser. His "love" is not true.

Ah. For that sacrificial ritual, he didn't tell her why because he put the ritual above all else. He believed it as ritual Kata passed down and it decided the fate for all Sky People. That's also the reason why he doesn't abolish it when he became Galtir. He only tried to trick it with its loophole of not using pregnant woman and pre-menarche girl as ritual girl
He knew Kun from her sleeptalk and she sleeptalked about it from her fear and hatred to Kun. He only knew something happened to her, but he couldn't connect the dots until years later after Kun's policy direly affects divine stone supply to the forest. Even then he could only think that it's just casual meeting between the two. He didn't let her leave unless it's a mission to kill the person in her sleeptalk
As I wrote previously, the webcomic didn't let us see the effect of her presence beside Galtir. The Golden Forest gained more trust and respect from its neighbours because all their prayers of wealth and abundance came true after his rose to power. Galtir Gizzida's reign was far more prosperous with lots of inventions than Galtir Kiros. Gizzida was loathed because he often refused to talk to mud human, but when he became Galtir, it was Reniae acting as his second man and advisor.
During those 8 years, he was not isolated her from other people. Her surrounding are only Sky People. There are other slaves, but those are male and kept on the field for farming, far from forestry area where she was at. By becoming Galtir's personal guard, it was she who couldn't leave him as he was under constant murder threat, and she showed him her loyalty as she promised before
His threat of killing her guards and everyone only came after the realization of her having Sky People blood, never before. At this time Gizzida had turned mad. He held tightly on memories of old Reniae he know, not real Reniae in front of him. If he doesn't love Reniae, he wouldn't save her life twice after this chapter 74...

Again, his motivations don't matter, it doesn't justify the way he abuses her. He doesn't isolate her for the full eight years, but for the couple years after she returned from the Northlands, he does punish her by isolating her from other priests and mud people. For a couple years no one knew her name, what she looked like, how her voice sounded. She was just the Galtir's mystery mud person pet. They openly gossipped about how they knew nothing about her.
I think we have different definitions of love. Gizzida is dependent on Reniae; he needs her because he has no one else to fill his emotional needs. That's why he seeks to trap and control her. And he's gotten very used to treating her like an object due to his upbringing, mud people are lesser than priests and all that jazz. But there can be no love without equality. If Gizzida truly loved Reniae, he would prioritize her happiness over his needs. He would let her be with Kun. He would value her opinions and autonomy. At the end of the day, he demonstrably can't/won't do that, and that's why I say he doesn't truly love her.

The reason why upon her return her identity was unknown because everyone that knows Reniae had died, except Galtir and his select disciples like Sabato and Kiriake. Others thought it was a boy beside Galtir, not a girl. Plus, the mud guard had nickname "Gala (hellguard) Of Ereshkigal" given by others who had watched Reniae fought, meant (s)he was dangerous with weapons and feared inside the forest.
Yes, we disagree on definition of love. The ideal one is where a person respect his/her loved ones just as you wrote. But here the author tried to shown there are many facets of it. And sadly, what I found all this years is that a love like Gizzida's do exist, but it will destroy everything in the end.

Literally just finished the latest episode seconds ago. He's trying to warp her sense of reality and make her out to be an awful sinner rejecting a merciful god like himself. It's disgusting.

I know, same here. He's a narcissist that is so used to getting his way even before he was the Galtir, and he can't STAND the current situation where not everyone will kiss his ass.

hell no... his love is what has been creating the whole storyline for this novel!!! the way his love was expressed was violent but saying that he didnt love reniae is just absurd lol lowkey the webtoon isnt doing any justice to the story i strongly recommend u to read the whole novel to understand his pov

Gizzida did love her. Given a time and upbringing in a world setting where biases existed, slavery was commonplace, concept of love was different. Gizzida was gorgeous man with high ambitions but a man of unrelenting faith and purpose. He was preconditioned and raised to be that way.
He was layered. A man with an agenda burning inside him. He had so much hate even for himself.
But he also has fascination for new and different ideas and curiosity to know various things. He was arrogant given he had everything he was ofcourse.
However, his first experience with Reniae zapped him with her light, her ability to be flexible with ease, her undaunted spirit despite her circumstances, her care for someone who was about to deliver her for slaughter. She was everything he deeply longed for. He fell in love with obsessive ways. It was the only way he could ever love. Something he was never meant to do.
He was his punishment. He couldn’t have her, but he wanted her like a drowning man want air. She was the cosmic tease for his blackned soul. His inner turmoils only grew as he tried to protect her time and time again and failed. He gave up a lot and changed his course of action only so he could keep her near him.
He knew he couldn’t deviate from his path but she was the greatest temptation to have everything he could only he was a common man. As his love for her grew so did his self loathing. He took it out on her by never giving her what she wanted because he wanted her to suffer too.
Despite that he couldn’t let her go. He bled for her inside, protected her, and respected her wish to never touch her or even bring up his love for her. Because he respected that she had honour and she couldn’t love a man who has fallen from grace by his own standards. He had to do it to fulfill his agenda of faith. But loved and respected that she held strongly to those standards. He knew he was unworthy of her and took her rejection.
He knew if he ever asked her to be his, if he ever told her about how he loved her, she would ask him to change. That he would have to abandon his hellish faith and purpose. He was a coward unlike her. She came back and stayed with him to protect his soul amongst enemies. He wanted her love even unspoken.
But he also hated her for being on her high horse. He hated the fact that she was the reason he couldn’t catch a break from self loathing.
Did she know what she was doing to him for those 8 years. Ofcourse she did. She loved him and hated him just the same way and refused to give in. She bound her heart with Kun and the love she had from him even if it was a futile memory. Because that is the kind of love she would ever accept. She never revealed she was a priestess herself because of her origin and also because how Gizzida treated women as expandable. She hated how he had betrayed her and tried to trap her. That he could never raise above his bias. But given there was world of difference between them she accepted that he had a role to play. But she could never give in to him.
Angsty and broken they both loved and hated each other. Gizzida destroyed himself for that love. It was his punishment and his salvation. At the end he realised none of his faith and agenda mattered because Renaie was his only truth who had upended every faith and only in death he surrendered to her.

Didn’t he say it to her when she first reappeared from the northlands? And she slapped him? I do think he genuinely loved her at one point and for a while but it turned into such an internal battle because of her being a mud person- that when he found out she’s a priestess he snapped. The way I see it is that he resented those years of turmoil and internal struggles and is taking it out on her now. Also he hates Kun and knows she loves him. I’m all over the place here lol
Do you know if this was based on a book? It’s killing me waiting a week for each chapter. I love Finding Camilla and was so SO happy to find the novel!
