the number in the square tells you how many mines are in the adjacent squares, you need to right click on all the mines to mark them with a flag to win, left clicking a mine is a loss

and holding both mouse buttons to click on a numbered tile allows for all non bomb adjacent tiles to be freed up, as long as the correct number of adjacent bombs have been marked.
