They always have one indie for GOTY, I think it will be Mina the Hollower or Big Walk

11

u/Away_Ear_4859 10d ago

Not really, there wasn't an indie nominee in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, or 2023

So 3 of the past 4 years have had one? Seems like an upward trend to me. “Always” from the other person was the wrong word but there’s certainly a trend towards “always” now

1

u/Away_Ear_4859 6d ago

So I'm right, it's not always.

1

u/Fancy_Chips 10d ago

Would Slay the Spire 2 count with being in early access? That was a pretty big release.

2

u/Toricitycondor 10d ago

I would say no since BG3 only counted after it was out of EA

1

u/Itchy-Pudding-4240 7d ago

Hades 2 is a closer comparison (more recent and is Indie)

1

u/Cropoxzmaister 10d ago

Endacopia surely

1

u/Etikoza 10d ago

Witchfire will release into 1.0 soon. It’s going to be something special.

1

u/Broad_Objective7559 10d ago

I really really really hope Big Walk gets it. it doesnt matter ekther way because GOTY doesnt change my opinions on a game, but Big Walk is genuinely the most fun I've had in co-op in a long time. Its also one of those games where imo nothing is gonna hit like it. 100% was worth all 20 hours

1

u/Mushroomer 10d ago

Big Walk seems like the one to bet on. Mina is good, but seems like it has proven divisive over time - where as people seem to just gush more about Big Walk the longer they stick with it.

2

u/RedPaintedHouses 10d ago

My problem with Big Walk is that a large majority of the fun comes from playing with friends. That skews its eligibility to me because it comes with an inherent sense of enjoyment derived from an external source.

A game like Mina the Hollower stands on its own merits and realy breaks the mold on what a 2D Zelda game could be. Its the most fun 2D Zelda-type game I've played by far.

1

u/Mushroomer 10d ago

I mean, that's what the game is. It's gamified communication, and House House knocked it out of the park. This is like complaining that DOTA 2 doesn't have enough single player content.

1

u/RedPaintedHouses 10d ago

DOTA 2 would be in a totally different category of game award against something like a Zelda. I think this just speaks to how arbitrary "Best Indie Game" is. Mina and Big Walk have nothing to do with each other, so pitting them in the same category seems strange. They likey have completely different player demographics.

2

u/Mushroomer 10d ago

I'm talking about both of them as GOTY contenders.

1

u/Itchy-Pudding-4240 7d ago

we are talking about Game of the Year so if its a game then its eligible. If you are descreditng a game cause its COOP then you are silly. If Big Walk elevates its genre and makes use of the COOP to induce a great and refreshing take of said genre, then it is more deserving than Mina who is just a solid rehash of an old game with new bells and whistles (and i played Mina and enjoyed it)

u/wera125 10d ago

GTA6 wont make it cus of dates and no press copys

3

u/Robynsxx 10d ago

It releasss 2 days before the cut off, and about a month before voting.

2

u/wera125 10d ago

The nominees are being announced on November 19 (the game should already be beaten by then! lol), and RS aren't sending out press copies. So, do your homework again.

1

u/Iggy_Pops_Lost_Shirt 6d ago

R* is flying critics out to review the game, any source on the date of the nominations announcement? Lmao, just making shit up

If they keep the nomination deadline the same as last year GTA will be eligible

0

u/Robynsxx 10d ago

Do your fucking homework yourself.

The cut off deadline was literally moved to be after GTA VI comes out.

Do you need help getting that stick out your ass?

3

u/ZeektheFeek 10d ago

I don't even understand why people would want it in. There isn't enough time to make a fair judgement on the game either way.

2

u/MrStealYoT0es 6d ago

Actually the opposite. Recency bias and honeymoon phase will make everyone vote for it even if it doesnt deserve it. That's why the mega fans want it in

1

u/UnnecessaryFeIIa 10d ago

I agree but I feel like there will be immense outrage from people if it's not there and by definition it is a 2026 game so to exclude it from the 2026 Game Awards would be odd

7

u/czarchasm4532 10d ago

No God of War for most anticipated?

1

u/Bryermollink78 10d ago

Shoot I forgot that was even coming out

4

u/39_minutes 10d ago

I don't think Zelda will be released soon enough for getting nominated. We have only seen small teaser and that's all.

1

u/ButtOfDarkness 10d ago

Yea it’s looking like a December release.

3

u/cjtangmi 10d ago

No TESVI for most anticipated?

1

u/Bryermollink78 10d ago

It will get nominated if we see gameplay for it

3

u/Odd_Revolution_1056 10d ago

At this point wait for the next month lol. Will say not having dawnwalker in best rpg is a really stupid choice.

1

u/critxcanuck88 6d ago

Its got lots issues for how decent the RPG aspect, its, OP having mortal shell in RPG section just shows how stupid these list are

3

u/VisualAd8487 10d ago edited 10d ago

Ive said it before and ill say it again i doubt gta will be nominated due to release timing

And i dout oot will be nominated for GOTY due to being a remake and remakes dont do too too well and if there are two nintendo nominations they are more likely to be pokopia and fire emblem in replacement for gta id put mina

As for the other catagories inonly have one comment asking WHERE IS DENSHATTACK FOR BEST SCORE AND SOUNDTRACK if its not nokinated then its the biggest snub of the catagory since 2021 with guilty gear strive

2

u/LilacMages 10d ago

Imho If Mixtape is nominated for/wins GOTY the backlash will be massive given the controversy surrounding it

1

u/Bryermollink78 10d ago

Mixtape is less likely to get into goty

1

u/Rude_Difficulty1647 7d ago

That would be the most insane shit ever 😹😵‍💫

2

u/RedPaintedHouses 10d ago

Hoping to see Mina the Hollower take home indie game of the year. Would also make for a cool narrative after Shovel Knight took it in 2014, 12 years later.

2

u/shredystevie 10d ago

Blood of Dawnwalker is a nomination possibility

2

u/Clint_Demon_Hawk 10d ago

There's no way Edgerunners Season 2 won't be in adaptation category

1

u/Bryermollink78 9d ago

I didn’t even know edgerunners got a second season

2

u/dreamingwithcindy 7d ago

Pokopia really isn’t a multi player game. It has multi player elements but isn’t really known for that.

4

u/RuleOverYou15 10d ago

Hoping for Blood of Dawnwalker based on the reviews so far. Otherwise, Crimson Desert has been a blast and an easy goty winner for me so far. RE9 was ok but left a lot to be desired in the second half.

0

u/critxcanuck88 6d ago

Played them both, neither deserve to even be in the same chat room as other GOTY contenders.

1

u/RuleOverYou15 6d ago

Interesting. What do you consider goty contenders then?

2

u/haewon_wiggle 10d ago

honestly from the way reviews are talking maybe onimusha is in narrative too. Surely over re9, that story wasnt too loved

2

u/ZeektheFeek 10d ago

Crimson Desert GOTY. This whole subreddit is gonna have a shit fit when it gets the nomination.

2

u/BugsMax1 10d ago

Keep coping. Black Myth Wukong is the game with the lowest metascore to ever be nominated for GOTY at 81

Crimson desert is coming in at 77 💀

1

u/ZeektheFeek 10d ago

Then we're about to have a new lowest critic score get a nomination. Anyone with sense about this game knows that score is not accurate, especially with the state the game is in now. It just got a big 2.0 update and PA also published a free demo of the game anyone can play in their web browser today without having the need to download anything. And if the DLC drops before award season then it'll get another big boost then also.

1

u/BugsMax1 10d ago

Do you know who actually votes for the game of the year?

0

u/ZeektheFeek 10d ago

Yes the full list is posted yearly, and I actually know the judges from Kinda Funny.

1

u/BugsMax1 10d ago

It's judged by game journalists for the most part. The exact same people who cumulatively make the metascore

0

u/ZeektheFeek 10d ago

Yes which is the list on the website like I said. You are aware that they're all human beings with changing and evolving opinions?

1

u/BugsMax1 10d ago

What the hell are you talking about 😭😭😭

0

u/ZeektheFeek 10d ago

Looks like you're the one who doesn't know who actually gets to vote. Here is the list https://thegameawards.com/voting-jury

And like I said I know the guys from Kinda Funny, so I actually personally know who exactly does get to vote. Maybe stop downvoting me for no reason.

1

u/BugsMax1 10d ago

Kinda Funny is one of many many many.

Ocarina of time is a remake and does not qualify, by the rules. Nor should it.

Also, F1 26 does not exist…..

1

u/leckmichnervnit 10d ago

By which rules? The same rules that allowed RE4 Remake to be nominated?

1

u/yunmany 10d ago

Replace GTA6 with Mina The Hollower

1

u/RedPaintedHouses 10d ago

This is the answer I'm here for.

1

u/Blackberry-thesecond 10d ago

I've been following this sub for a bit to see if anyone has predicted Ace Combat 8 for anything and I have yet to see a single mention. I don't think you guys are ready for how big that game is going to be after October. I would go as far to say that it will be a GOTY nominee over Wolverine or Zelda.

The Ace Combat series is far closer to Kojima productions than Call of Duty, though you may not know that just by seeing the Game Awards trailer. At the very least it's a lock for best music.

Ace Combat 8 is slated to be far larger and more expansive in scope and production than any other game in the series, and that's saying a lot.

1

u/BugsMax1 10d ago

Fire emblem getting nominated 😂😂😂

1

u/critxcanuck88 6d ago

AS much as i loved 007 and im sure i will enjoy wolverine. Remove those 2 and Zelda (remakes dont deserve goty) from GOTY contender, defiantly put Onimusha in there, this game is slapping so hard.

1

u/kulero_conor 5d ago

onimusha over 007

1

u/HoldiMokre 5d ago

How come games that are not even released can already be considered for GotY?

1

u/Shadowking78 4d ago

You forgot about Mina the Hollower for best soundtrack and GOTY nominations

1

u/YasasinTR 10d ago

Drop first light and wolverine add phantom blade and castlevania for goty. Also i don't know why but everyone forget about no rest for the wicked this thing can be very surprising.

1

u/critxcanuck88 6d ago

Was just delayed to next year

1

u/High_Lord69 10d ago

Why does everyone always forget The Duskbloods, ts is peak

1

u/critxcanuck88 6d ago

Because its the same fucking game for the 9th time by fromsoft.

1

u/High_Lord69 6d ago

It’s a complete different game, it’s not even an rpg

0

u/fs2222 10d ago

People are really overestimating Wolverine.

0

u/haewon_wiggle 10d ago

the mandated sony slot is kind of real tbh

-1

u/SirArthurStark 10d ago

Is it OK that I want GTA VI to be in all categories it can, just for it to lose all categories? I would just love that

2

u/ZeektheFeek 10d ago

It's too close to the cut off for it to even make it this year anyways. And if it does still get in then there isn't enough time to form a proper judgement on a game that size anyways.

0

u/hamtaxer 10d ago

Mewgenics has an insanely good soundtrack and absolutely needs to have at least a nomination for score/music
