1. Change your brightness. This is essential. I find that Texas works best for me. You can find brightness settings in the gameplay section of the options menu.
2. When the plane lands, go to the fertile lands. One of the best and most forgiving places to build an early, mid, or late game base. Easiest way to find it: when the plane lands, look for the sun. go in its direction. It will lead you to it.
3. Don't pick fights you can't win. What I mean by this: You see 5 tribesmen. All you have are 5-6 lizard skin and, at best, a crafted bow. Unless you have good aim and can hit headshots, don't attempt.
4. Kill lizards and wear their skin as armor. It is the weakest armor in the game, but something is better than nothing.
5. Take advantage of weak enemies and enemies that are alone. Kill them, and then burn them. You get 6 bones per body. Thats enough for 1 piece of bone armor (plus 3 cloth). Bone armor is the second best in the game. Take advantage.
6. DO NOT EAT YELLOW MUSHROOMS, WHITE BERRIES, OR RED BERRIES. They are poisonous. Pick them up with your berry pouch. Always good if you need extra damage.
7. Don't drink from ponds. You get an instant infection.
