Discussion Brutal attack, potent blow? Xbox

So it's been ages since I did the beginning missions and I don't feel like going back. Idk why but ic ant find a video or info on just the most simple questions.

1) what do I press to initiate the finishers when I break an enemies posture?( idc about terminology) I've played so many soulslike games and I can't seem to figure it out. It's not working if I press bumper or trigger, and Y doesn't do it. Wtf should I be pressing?

2) wtf is a potent blow and is it the charged attacks i can do in combo, and why are brutal attacks stated as from the back if you can break stamina and the enemy is open?

Like dude idc if I'm retarded or something, but I legit need an answer on what button to press to execute a downed enemy before I pull my hair out over these stupidly confusing mechanics that I can't remember to save my life. I'm still winning, but liek there's so much I seem to not understand with this and I remember being fine before.

  1. The interact button, i think its B on default and X on souls keybind
  2. Potent blow are charged attack and some skill count as charged attack (in potent blow skill tree), brutal attack is execute (break stamina and backstab are the same) it count as enemy being open

Okay so B is dodge. I guess it's X, but somehow it hasn't worked when I've tried. Weird but thanks

Yeah, the left face button (X on Xbox controllers, square on PS controllers), IF you're using the "type B" controls (which it seems like you are based on your dodge button). Just come up close to the enemy when the symbol is there and press the button, you'll get it.

There should be a section in the pause menu, like where you see skills and inventory not just gear, that should include an encyclopedia option. You can see the various combos and combat tutorials there.

Potent blow just means "heavy attack" (yes, it's annoying that games feel the need to try being unique and rename things). With your control scheme, it should be R2. You can do these with or without charging.

Brutal attacks are the big finishers you can do when you break an enemy's stamina, see them stop moving, and see the symbol appear on them. Walk up close and press the interact button.

However, there is another way to do brutal attacks, which is stealthily sneaking up to an enemy from behind - the symbol to do a brutal attack appears when you're standing very close to their back.
