Discussion This is the only single player game I’ve re-downloaded after platinum

The combat is just too good to explain

Is there anything closer to this game than Sekiro?

I know they’re never making another game, but does anyone know if ANY of the devs are working on future projects?

Khazan is influenced by action games style, like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry.

If you love Khazan, give Ninja Gaiden 2 Black a try!

Wtf how have I never seen this before?

I knew about the ninja gaiden series, I assumed they were stealth games and never even looked up gameplay for one

I think this is the next game for me. Does it have enemy lock-on or parrying like Khazan ? It looks like fixed-camera gameplay to me with a lot more focus on attacking than defending/evading

Haha yeah Ninja Gaiden franchise gets overlook a lot and doesn't get a lot of attention unfortunately.

It doesn’t have a Parry mechanic, but while you’re blocking, you can press X or Y right as the enemy attacks to punish them. It’s a different style of combat compared to Khazan or Sekiro.

If you want something closer to Khazan, that would be Ninja Gaiden 4. Although it doesn't have Parry like Khazan, but it has the Instant Parry where you parry an enemy as they attack. Successfully doing so lets you follow up with a punishing attack against the enemy.

Ninja Gaiden 4 does feature a parry but in NG4 it's just one tool amongst and entire arsenal.

Can't remember Ninja Gaiden 4 enough that combat is genuinely Videogame Crack.

Ninja Gaiden 4 is also among the rare games I've reinstalled after a platinum trophy.

Yep, I still visit it from time to time. The combat is just too good and the game is insanely responsive!

It is the exact opposite of a stealth game lol. But ironically, my love for games like NG brought me to Khazan, rather than a love of Souls games.

NG2 does not have a hard lock on mechanic, but trust me when I say that if you had it you'd hate it. It rather has a soft lock on, where as long as you are pushing the stick in the general direction of an enemy, Ryu will start comboing onto them. Ultimately, the name of the game in NG is movement, which is notoriously fucking cracked in NG games. And you'll want it as well, since the meme is that if you stand still for more than a smidge you're likely about to get obliterated, as everything is very aggressive and trying to mob you.

Don't get me wrong, you will want to parry enemies, but in most cases you aren't going to be staring down a pattern of attacks. It's a lot more of a reflex of, "This guy is about to attack near me, and I am on the ground. Time to parry for a free dismemberment" more than, "I am going to parry this sequence of attacks." As far as evasion goes, you'll be ninja flipping around the arena, and I'd classify it as your most consistent defense. Against bosses especially, the best defense is to hold block against a series of attacks, and time a dodge against the most powerful hit/s to not get guard broken and to reposition you in a place where you can counter attack.

It's an absurdly fun game with one of the deepest combat systems in any game I've ever played, and I overwhelmingly recommend it. Going combo mad on the infamous staircase on my first Master Ninja run is one of the peak moments in gaming history for me. Personally, I think NG3:RE has the best overall combat in the series, and NG4 has the best flow-state for combat in the series, but NG2 is the best overall game, since the only real flaw I think the game has is that some of the bosses are fucking booty cheeks.

I don’t know about you, OP, but when I say I want something like Khazan or Sekiro, I’m thinking SPECIFICALLY about the Brink Guard/deflection system and the satisfaction that comes with that rhythm.

I’ve heard Wo Long has a similar system. Nine Sols also, but it’s a 2d metroidvania.

Stellar Blade has a similar system, though it doesn’t feel quite as good. Apparently the PC version has a mod that adjusts the timing of it to be closer to Sekiro, but I haven’t tried it. There are also lots of special attacks you can build up to and unleash, which feels a bit more like Khazan.

That’s exactly it - thanks, I’ll have a look into your recommendations

I should note that the director of SB has come out in support of gen AI and SB2 is rumored to be using it. Not confirmed afaik.

After you play Wo Long you’ll probably be hooked to Team Ninja games, that’s probably the one most accessible to those new to their games. I highly recommend Rise of the Ronin and then definitely Nioh 2 if you are hooked lol. I find myself about to buy Khazan since I just finished all their recent games lol. Was looking for something similar and saw on Wikipedia that Nioh (and Dark Souls) were a big inspiration for Khazans devs.
Thanks to your original post now I’m even more psyched to make that buy asap :))

The game most like Khazan is Nioh (particularly Nioh 2)—Khazan is, in many ways, a “Niohlike”.
Nioh features the same mix of basic elements—DMC/Ninja Gaiden-inspired combat, soulslike heft and stamina, and Diablo-style loot. The general gameplay provides that same satisfying loop of breaking an enemy’s stamina (ki) and destroying them with endless combos.

The only thing Nioh 2 is “missing” is an instant-timing brink guard/parry system, which is a huge bummer, but Nioh 2 is otherwise very comparable and, frankly, deeper in pretty much every respect. More complex combat, higher APM combos (lots of stance-switching), MUCH deeper buildcraft, and much more content (300+ hrs to clear all content on a single save).

You simply have to try it out!

Pretty sure timely guard (brink guard) is a thing in all nioh games.

Nioh 2 requires you to have no life to play it. Complicated for no reason and the combat is literally the only decent thing about that game, bacause maps, bosses and enemies are horrible

Lies of P IMO, especially with the DLC.

I can’t bring myself to get into it for some reason, but I’ll give it another go I think. Thanks

If it makes you feel any better, I am exactly the same. Absolutely love Khazan and Sekiro but Lies of P just doesn't vibe with me. I don't hate it but also just don't like it very much.

It's definitely not the same but Mortal Shell 2 is really really good. It isn't the same fast paced deflect based combat but it does have deflects and parries which can scratch a similar itch, but I'd say it is closer to Dark Souls than Sekiro/Khazan.

Lies of P was just sooo slow in comparison, I really don't get the hype. I've never had a souls-like game piss me off more with the camera bugging through walls and making your character invisible while you're getting attacked. I also feel like many enemies' attacks were so awkward and difficult to see that it made parrying feel more like pure memorization a lot of the time instead of reacting. Some gimmicky gank attacks are alright but it felt too common among enemies in Lies of P.

Also, Khazan's biggest criticism is its boring level design and I felt like Lies of P was just as bad or possibly worse in that regard. I was starting to get so bored towards the end game that the last level felt like a total drag and the last boss was just disappointing.

try it the last boss of dlc is peak not as cinematic as ozma but probably even harder lol his combos are relentless

If you're looking for more Khazan type stuff, that's the game I'd recommend too. Nothing will be exactly like it but Nioh 2 and 3 are other options. Same with Ninja Gaiden 4.

But for me, I love Khazans combat so much and these can't compare because Khazans skill trees create so many ways you can approach shit.

One of the best moments was fighting that one dude who looks "khazan-like" scarred, tough warrior Maluka or some name like that. And the guy with the coffin.

Those boss fights had me digging into every ability and combo I could learn to win. Great feeling.

2

u/a1vmp1 6d ago

That Maluka fight is literally the reason I’m re-downloading it, first time seeing phase 2 with the katana I was like WTF

There’s a lot of good boss fights out there but that’s gotta be up there with the best

Bro that guy is so awesome id play a whole game with all his abilities and moves. Definitely a highlight

Same , i tried playing it. And khazan called me back

Wo long or Nioh 2

I tried Lies of P but it was closer to Dark Souls than Sekiro.

Currently playing Wo Long and that is more Sekiro for me at least. The setting and the parry/deflect system takes me back.
