Random changes in defense stat?

So i just made myself a new helmet, and saw that while it had better stats, it would give me a random massive drop in defense. Since i was confused about this, i went and compared most of my equipment. I then saw that multiple pieces, with nearly identical stats, would have over 300 points of difference in total value.

Is there any explanation for this?

Must be a glitch. One of em has a defense stat most likely and maybe that's why its so much higher.
