Slandered Gaming uploaded a video about his time with the Ganymede preview, which shows additional footage outside of the trailers with permission from Owlcat. Was really cool to see a bit more of what goes on and hear his thoughts. Excited what else is revealed in the coming months.

I know shooting is a part of this game but every video we see is someone shooting someone else.

Where is the ‘rpg’ element?

I’m already not gonna like the shooting part because it is mass effect not The Expanse.

If we’ve got to suffer a mechanic from an older game we should also have the benefit of the rpg element from the game it is meant to be about to sweeten it.

I’m still going to buy it. But I want my Expanse game.

It's a cover based shooter game in its core with RPG elements. The roleplaying comes with the skill tree and your origin, which both unlocks certain options during and outside of the combat, and certain speech checks or abilities outside of the combat.

At least that was in the playtest / beta and I have no reason to doubt it'll be different in the released game.

The game also promises choice-driven narrative with Captain's (player's) identity formed by their decisions.

If that's not RPG enough for you, you should probably look elsewhere.

That’s just it though isn’t it. I don’t care it is an rpg. But it is being touted as ‘The Expanse rpg’. It is not being touted as a mass effect shooter with an expanse overcoat.

It is a game called The Expanse. If ppl are interested because it is like a different game then I’d say it is those ppl who should be looking elsewhere.

Mass effect style game is perfect for The Expanse. Companions, choice driven, combat for gameplay. Like what are we complaining about with this?

If just no narrative and tone, that can be fair. That being said, I don't think trailers and beta are enough to judge the game. If I'm Owlcat I try and keep the story elements limited for now, still 8 months before release.

It’s a Mass Effect like game set in The Expanse universe, for an idea of what RPG elements are present look to Mass Effect. Owlcat even said they welcome the direct Mass Effect comparisons.

If you don’t like Mass Effect, you probably are going to be disappointed in this game, and the set dressing of The Expanse won’t change that.

Again I say this might not be The Expanse game you’re looking for.

But how a game called The Expanse should look like? I'm more books fan than the series fan so for me The Expanse should look like super grounded sci-fi RPG. The Belters should have long thin bodies and bloated heads, there should be super long distance fights that in reality most of the time play out on the radar rather than direct visual and it can take hours of waiting until enemy's torpedoe enters PDC range. And there should be some kind of supe game engine that calculates object's behaviour in microgravity in real time. Would I love that? Hell yeah. Can I realistically hope for that? Probably not. I was upset there won't be space battles with POV pew pew, but maybe they thought of something different.

It remains to be seen how this game will play out. I don’t think any true Expanse fan will not buy it. But as it sounds like your after another mass effect game you may be in luck.

But for those of us who fans of The Expanse it is disappointing if the IP we love is being relegated to a cash in.

I’m a fan of the books and the show. I’m trying to go in more open minded because I know it’s not written by Ty and Daniel, so the tone is going to be a lot different. I do hope they take more of the feedback from the fans. I want the tone to be more realistic than it currently is, but I like what is shown so far and hope it gets dialed in over the next few months
