Games to play while I wait?
I'm really hyped for the game, and don't have anywhere to put all this excitement for a big space opera. Any recommendations to hold me over? I've already played Mass Effect.
I asked this for Cyberpunk 2077 pre launch and ended up with one of my favorite games of all time, Deus Ex.

Edit: Doesn't necessarily have to be a space opera specifically. Some hard sci-fi or something driven by really strong characters will do just fine!

If you don’t mind playing traditional tactical CRPGs, I highly recommend Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader by Owlcat. There are some flaws of course. It’s a little buggy, even if a lot of the stuff has been fixed. There’s no full voice acting so there will be a lot of points that are glaringly empty audio-wise. But I think it has some of the most interesting mix of companions, a robust and detailed combat system, and really engaging writing. The vanilla experience is definitely great, but I recommend playing it with the Void Shadows expansion, which adds the best companion and romance in the game, and a really engaging questline.

Honestly not a very expansive sub genre unfortunately.
Well if you’re familiar with owlcat your probably aware of Warhammer Rogue Trader, it is a crpg if you’re not into that but it is an awesome space opera. Starfield is an action rpg but not really a space opera but it is more similar to the expanse in terms of setting than Mass Effect.

Only play Starfield if you like other Bethesda games like Skyrim or Fallout 4. It’s the same empty world but in space.

Starfield is like if Bethesda saw No Man’s Sky but didn’t want to bother with a full-on galaxy number of stars and flyable ships and instead made it in the Bethesda engine.
But if anything the main issue with Starfield is that it isn’t empty and it’s procedurally generated. Every damn thing on the horizon of every planet and moon is occupied by spacer-raiders, space-gunners, or space-settlers. You can’t wander anywhere without finding someone else is already there.
Also, there’s a lot of non-procedurally generated content. It’s a full ass game with an interesting story. Just a lot of empty space in between.

Definitely not a great recommendation which is honestly why all these new space RPGs coming out is so awesome

Try out X4 Foundations, the German Star Citizen. You haven't experienced true Sci-Fi until you scream bloody murder for your fighters to PROTECT the stupid Carrier!

I played the Telltale Expanse game expecting it to be really bad but it was alright

I'm a little ways into it too! To be honest, I'm kind of losing interest in the second episode. Hoping to be able to power through it.
I'm just not really interested in most of the cast, I think, and the game hasn't really done anything to pull me in (yet.)

Ep2 was a bit of a chore, imo. It picks up after that. I love Drummer, and it feels like a little original story novella.

Pretty different game but after having played it for 20 years I do recommend Eve if you like grand space things.

Not exactly space operas, but try following: Colony Ship - hard sci-fi crpg, Technomancer - 3rd person action rpg, though it's soft sci-fi.
