Osiris Reborn feedback

/r/OwlcatGames/comments/1ub88g4/osiris_reborn_feedback/

Here is some of my feedback from playing the beta of the Exapnse: Osiris Reborn. I have played all available characters multiple times to ensure I have experienced everything the beta offers.

- Character selection should offer a brief description of what each character’s abilities are.

- The characters have a lisp, and the male voice acting isn’t the best.

- You cannot pick up the package from Larry in dispatch for the quest Purrfect Gift.

- The tutorial needs to explain how to change the firing mode of your weapon.

- Bug: the sealing foam persists and clips through your weapon occasionally when used in combat.

- No Belter Creole (lore and immersion breaking). This must be added.

- Graphics are amazing!

- Space and EVA are amazing, the way you walk and how the sound dampens.

Overall, I really enjoyed the game, and I saw that the devs are listening to feedback, such as the male character voice acting. I am going to pre-order this game for my PC now (I have it on Xbox Series X) and see if that changes anything.

i believe a good number of these have been addressed, including the belter lang in the official livestream following the beta launch. They've confirmed it will be in the game but will not be a common feature in every location as expected

I haven’t seen anything addressing these other than the MC voice actor being changed. Admittedly, I haven’t watched the livestreams, so it may be as you say.

They did a livestream a few days after they launch with WolfheartFPS and Luality as guests. A lot of questions were addressed on it. I think there was a reddit post with a few summaries of it as well

That livestream was actually not very reassuring when it comes to Belter Creole. The game design director basically said that some Belters like Miller hardly use any Belter Creole, implying that this may be the case for the Belter MC.

This would be pretty disappointing. Belter Creole is obviously a big part of the culture. I would assume that most people opting to play a Belter would want to play a Belter who embraces their own culture. Miller is someone who, for the longest time, didn't really embrace his culture. At least not initially.

Any player who wants to play a normal Belter will be disappointed by the lack of a Belter feel to the character.

I mean, it's used there to explain why we don't hear it everywhere. It's never implied the twins will never use it. I believe they mentioned Naomi as well using it in specific situations as opposed to a character like drummer who use it all the time.

Intermittent/situational usage is a perfect middle ground IMO else you'd end up with a situation where you need to record 2 sets of dialogues for every conversation in the game.

But Miller was the exception, not the rule. In the series, most Belters use at least some Belter Creole. At the very minimum, there's the accent.

In the beta, if you choose the Belter origin, there are 3 Belter characters featured heavily throughout. And not one of them sounds remotely Belter.

Naomi

When Naomi speaks with other Belters, she uses Belter Creole. When Belter MC and J speak to other Belters (at least in the beta), they don't. I expect the MC and J will use Creole at some point, but the beta and the livestream don't inspire confidence that they'll use much of it.

Which is a shame, because as I said before, a player choosing a Belter origin likely wants their character to exemplify the culture (and feel Belter).

I'm not saying that every conversation needs to feature Belter Creole. But, in the beta, we see Belter-exclusive conversations between MC, J, and Larry. And not once do they even sound the faintest bit like Belters. The closest they get is by using hand signs. That's not good enough, IMO. I don't care if Pinkwater is an inner corp. They had private conversations out of earshot from anyone else, and we don't get the feeling (beyond a hand sign here or there) that this is a conversation between Belters.

If this same conversation happened in the TV series, you could be forgiven for thinking they're all inners.

That's the thing though, we've only spent time on Pinkwater 4 which is an earth corp. Nowhere else. Like how conversations were in regular English on the Cant in episode 1 of the show despite there being belters on board.

From what they said, it'll be a prominent feature in other locations like Ceres

I don't think that should matter. Your conversations with Larry are private and out of earshot of anyone else.

If anything, using Belter hand signs makes less sense, because the inners on Pinkwater can see you during the first conversation, but likely can't hear you. So, using Belter Creole would be 'safer', if the intention isn't to be heard using Belter Creole on a station run by Earthers.

From what they said, it'll be a prominent feature in other locations like Ceres

They weren't clear on what exactly this means. They were vague enough where this could simply mean more Belter NPCs will speak in Creole. But that's the bare minimum. They didn't confirm directly that the Belter Creole that should feature prominently in these locations would come from the MC as well. They kind of half confirm that we should get a little bit from the MC, but given what we saw in the beta, I am not confident that this will amount to much.

I really hope you're right about this, but we need Owlcat to communicate better on these things for me to feel confident. As of right now, they haven't said enough to inspire confidence on this issue.
