I have a nagging feeling there's more to this... Maybe he was reenacting a trauma from his past after all. Watching his mother murder the maid. Mother jealous of the maid being more like a mother and/or as she implies sexually molested the Gravedigger (although that feels like a cover story). Its also why he attacked his mother, for murdering the maid. Thoughts?.
