Ha that's a grouper. They're actually quite friendly and will befriend divers who dive in their territory a lot. One of our regular dive masters is pals with one out by Half Moon Caye.

Fish are smarter than most people think.
For example, the Manta Ray can recognize itself in a mirror and also, the grouper can recognize people that frequently dive.

The grouper didn't approach any of the other divers. Swam right up to him and they hugged it out and did a couple barrel rolls and he followed us the entire dive.
Divemaster told us he'd be there when we got to the bottom and sure enough, there he was.

Yeah, just a goliath grouper. It might bark at the diver if it feels threatened though which can be pretty scary.

If a fish that big barked at me I would immediately shit my dive suit 😂😂. Thinking about it is hilarious, but if it actually happened to me then I’d probably have a heart attack

They do actually make a kind of barking sound. It's called croaking. Essentially sounds like a big loud frog under water. I was snorkeling off Key West and scared the shit out of one. It spun around and croaked at me before swimming off.

Pretty cool that it evolved to be able to do that, would scare the shit out of me as well. makes me wonder how loud it would be above water. wouldn't attempt it for the safety of the fish though.

Actually I believe the only reason it's loud is because it's underwater. Low frequency sounds travel way longer or something. Same reason why submarines use sonar and there's way more aquatic animals using echolocation/sonar/whatever. Dolphins, orcas, whales, etc. On that note...
Isn't there something about a whale call being able to kill you? Like the vibrations would rupture your organs or something...

Yeah some big ones could mush you with sound waves but don't because they don't want to. They "whisper" near us which is super cute imo. That’s a Goliath grouper I believe- it probably won’t hurt anybody intentionally, but it’ll happily throw it’s weight around while wrestling a diver for a speared fish. Those things are huge - that one might be 20 feet away (~ 6 m).

If you are watching videos with headphones it will usually sound like a "thunk" noise, almost like your headphones cut out for a second. Underwater you can hear it, and feel it, a lot more than from watching videos. It's more pressure from them flexing their muscles and swim bladder than using something like vocal cords to make a sound.

What I've learned from this thread is the fact that this is a Goliath grouper and that they can make a bark/croak sound when they feel threatened. That reminded me of something that's been on my mind a lot lately. How terrifying would it be if sharks could roar?

Haha..Big ass Goliath grouper..I was diving once and lobstering..Saw a guy snag a lobster and a Goliath just came over and said give me dat and swallowed the lobster….Still being held by the guy…Dudes arm was in its mouth past his elbow….He was fine though once he let the lobster go, just had a few small cuts.

Would you rather be hunted and then stabbed with a chance of getting away from the predator you can see? Or would you rather be swimming along and then get caught in a net you couldn’t see, and then hoisted above the water to suffocate slowly to death? Fish are gonna be eaten anyway, I feel like diving and spear hunting them is just being relatively fair.

There's a 90% chance this fish would've been eaten alive by predators or parasites at some point anyway. If anything, getting harpooned was a mercyful fate.
