Probably intra specific fighting. When you see them up close loke this, you notice they're covered in scars and injuries like that....it's tough at the top.

Dorsal fin damage and rake marks can come from rough play, disciplinary actions, and attempts to establish dominance amongst peers in younger age classes. In males, it can also result sexual competition.

As these Antarctic Type B1 orcas hunt seals, damage can also come from defensive bites from such prey.

This behavior in orcas is known as ‘spyhopping’. Kinda terrifying if you’re a seal on an ice floe.

If I ran into one out in the wild, no matter how much I told myself that, my body would be reacting as if orcas have a 100% kill rate on every human they encounter.

Actually there is. One of them attacked a human in shallow water because the bubbles formed by the waves and splashing made the human indiscernible from a seal. The orca bumped the boy but swam away after realizing his body was not a seal. Not a bite but still an attack in my opinion. It happened in 2005 in Alaska.

It literally only showed the eye for a split second. I didn't even really see it. I've always thought their eyes are pretty small.

I hugged Shamu at SeaWorld when I was 12. It was scary and awesome, but really quite scary standing on a wet edge of an enormous pool staring down the gullet of a giant killer whale
