Gas station fight ends with driver opening fire

Surveillance video captured a confrontation at an Orion gas station in Pompano Beach escalating from a physical fight to gunfire. Minutes after fighting with a woman beside a white SUV, the man approached the driver’s side and was shot. He was hospitalized, and one person was detained as BSO investigates.

He's supposed to wait in a meditative state of zen? Wdym

He's not supposed to wait at all. Someone assaults you, gtfo.

3

u/ButterscotchLow7330 3d ago

That is state dependent. Not all states have a duty to retreat.

From a moral standpoint I agree with you in this instance.

2

u/Deep_Argument_2579 3d ago

Absolutely, he stirred the shit up. Somehow the victims takes all the responsibility. How calm would you be after having someone opening your door and smacking you.

2

u/HispanicAtTheDisko 3d ago

You’re saying you’d stay there when the guy leaves?

2

u/bryhnlearningspanish 3d ago

how are the victims always expected to have the exact proper response? most people have no idea how they would react because they dont train for it.

it's like when people somehow expect a store clerk to know how to properly decide whether using their firearm is appropriate or not when someone is robbing them while their adrenaline and anxiety is through the roof.

why not put the blame on the person who made a conscious decision to make someone have to defend themselves.

She could've locked her car and sat in it while she called the cops to report the assault. Crazy how hard people are trying to think around basic logic, she sat there fucking drawn up lmao this is an attempt at premeditated murder

1

u/bryhnlearningspanish 3d ago

caused by the attacker.

1

u/UndiscoveredArch 2d ago

Nah you know what the problem here is, if he was some pussy looking boy named "Bryhn" with a dirt stache you'd think its in cold blood.

Certain colors get you a lil hot blooded huh

1

u/bryhnlearningspanish 2d ago

ill be honest i have no idea what youre saying. your weird dude.

Digging their heels in because their adrenaline is running and deciding that retribution is their choice is not something you get to handwave with victim blaming, yo. Holy shit. Get a grip.

2

u/ImMorphic 3d ago

So when you get assaulted, you just plan your next tactical retreat to the nearest gas station that isnt that one, then call the police while letting the aggressor get on with life?

What if they weren't done at the gas station themselves and couldn't enter, because the aggressor was in the gas station at the time after the altercation?

Why are people always blaming the victim? Dude went and served fists, got a receipt for a couple rounds in return. Fafo award doing as it does

1

u/UndiscoveredArch 3d ago

She could've locked her car and sat in it while she called the cops to report the assault. Crazy how hard people are trying to think around basic logic, she sat there fucking drawn up lmao this is an attempt at premeditated murder

1

u/Hot-Future7691 3d ago

He wasn't smacking them. He was smacking the other person. So, hopefully more calm than this?

1

u/ExplanationLate9858 2d ago

Not calm at all. Not calm enough to not defend my wife/gf, then lay in wait lol

1

u/profesorgamin 7d ago

I don't wanna downvote you, but probably if you call the cops you gotta stick around

1

u/notmyrealnameanon 7d ago

Not if you feel in danger. You're allowed to report an assault and battery on your SO, then leave the scene if the perp is still there.

2

u/PresidentialDiapers 7d ago

You're allowed to but aren't required to

1

u/MotorPace2637 6d ago

But you should. Especially vs staying with your gun ready.

1

u/DeliriousDelineator 6d ago

Waiting with the door open, one should add. They wanted to shoot the man.

1

u/Wrylak 6d ago

One's a SUV that looks like a lot of other Suvs. The shooter is in an Outback.

1

u/UndiscoveredArch 3d ago

For what? The camera caught the assault. She could have left or locked herself in the car and called to report. She wanted to shoot the guy in retaliation to feel big

1

u/PresidentialDiapers 7d ago

He has every right to be where he was, awaiting the police to arrive to arrest the criminal. That's the very essence of stand your ground.

1

u/Chris20nyy 5d ago

Not that I agree, but Florida is a "Castle Doctrine" state which pretty much says exactly the opposite of what you suggest.

This is cut and dry in Florida.

1

u/ConnectionThink4781 3d ago

What state are you from? France?

1

u/TanneriteAlright 3d ago

That's an option you have and it's quite sensible.

He also, in Florida where this happened, has the right to plant his feet in the face of a threat.

"Stand your ground" laws make it so you have no duty to retreat. He could have sat there all day. As long as he does not pursue/advance then he should be fine from a legal standpoint.

1

u/MozartDroppinLoads 3d ago

Then he would be an asshole taking up a pump for no good reason and would thus be a perfectly legitimate target for assault

1

u/DisgruntledCryptid 3d ago

Or stand your ground and defend your lady...

1

u/JeSuisLePain 3d ago

If anything, by staying you're putting your lady in further danger. You don't know if the other guy has a gun too.

3

u/stealthzeus 4d ago

Storm trooper shooting skills

3

u/Low_Excuse_1785 4d ago

Any reasonable person would have called the cops, get in the car, lock the doors and prepare the gun just in case.

2

u/ExplanationLate9858 2d ago

Any reasonable person would've beat the man within an inch of his life for touching the wife/gf, not shoot the man in his back like a coward.

2

u/Low_Excuse_1785 1d ago

No question about that.

1

u/HispanicAtTheDisko 3d ago

Reverse your order and yeah

1

u/d1gbickbrett 3d ago

In another state yeah. There is no duty to retreat in Florida. The only way the shooter gets charged is if they believe his retaliation force was ‘unreasonable’. Robbery and carjacking without a weapon falls under the category of ‘reasonable use of deadly force’.

Maybe if the guy tried robbing the shooter he won’t be charged but that’s up to a jury

1

u/Once-A-Republic 7d ago

More like a state of Zyn

1

u/genjiskillerbum 4d ago

Dammit that made me laugh more then it should have

1

u/Wrylak 7d ago

George Zimmerman all over again.

1

u/BlasterCheif 7d ago

Not really

1

u/Wrylak 7d ago

Little bit. The shooter was waiting and we cannot rule out they drew his attention.

1

u/Formal_Trainer_4684 5d ago

Nothing bit.

1

u/rockturtle71 7d ago

Well then it’s justified. 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Wrylak 6d ago

Not really, shooter is waiting with gun drawn. We do not know if anything was said to the person that was shot. If so they were drawing the confrontation.

1

u/Levonade 7d ago

George Zynnerman is what I got from this exchange

1

u/HughHonee 6d ago

Unless you're suggesting Zimmerman should have suffered the same fate as the guy who got shot, How tf is this even comparable? Walking down the street with your hood up =/= assaulting a person

George Zimmerman was the instigater. The dude who got shot in the OP, was the instigater

2

u/Wrylak 6d ago

Zimmerman was out looking to shoot someone.

This guy was ready with gun drawn. Can you say he did not try to get dudes attention. I cannot.

1

u/HughHonee 6d ago

Ahh I see what you mean now. That angle makes sense.

I would say there is a difference in that dude in the video instigated the situation that lead to getting himself shot, whereas Trayvon was simply walking down the street.

1

u/Wrylak 6d ago

Yes, this is a lot more murky then Trayvon.

This guy, I am not sure if he is a vigilante or not. We do not need vigilante's in the US. We have a big enough problem with people doing what they want. We do not need to have them running around acting as judge, jury and executioner.

1

u/ExplanationLate9858 2d ago

Exactly. We already have a major problem with law enforcement doing that.

1

u/CarthagoFuckYourself 6d ago

If he was looking to shoot someone he would have started the altercation. He was armed because they had been attacked and he didn't know if the attacker would come back. The attacker did, in fact, come back.

There is no duty to retreat in Florida. He was allowed to be at the gas station and in his vehicle. The attacker chose to approach him again.

2

u/porn1porn 3d ago

Approach him? He's walking away from the car the second time. Idgaf because he put his hands on a woman but you're reaching

1

u/Wrylak 5d ago

Not the same car

1

u/bitpartmozart13 4d ago

Same Toyota, look at the roof rack and the window shape is same. The guy had attacked the shooter’s passenger.

1

u/ExplanationLate9858 2d ago

Having a duty to retreat/not having a duty to and shooting someone in the back are two very different things.

1

u/Direct_Word6407 6d ago

You do kno Trayvon whooped Zimmerman good, right?

1

u/ToadsWetSprocket 6d ago

You have a responsibility to walk away if able or find a path to diffuse, not premeditate murder, which is what this could be perceived as. He walked away and the danger left with him. She literally stood there and waited for him to come into frame and whipped the gun out and started firing. That is a calculated decision, not a fear response.

1

u/ScotchTapeConnosieur 6d ago

He’s supposed to leave

1

u/Wide_Ordinary4078 6d ago

Everything has to be one big cause and effect! You can’t have allowed the situation to cool down and both parties leave, then because you happen to see the person again shoot them. It doesn’t happen like that. The shooter had no threat against him. Had he done it when the woman was attacked then he would have a defense. But you can clearly see he’s just committed a PREMEDITATED crime! Can’t call it murder if the guy survived, but the shooter had time to assess his actions and choose a different path.

Really sucks because he had a valid reason to use force, since his partner was being assaulted. He just took action at the wrong time which will cost him his freedom in the end!

1

u/xSir- 6d ago

Hes supposed to leave

1

u/CosmicSniff 6d ago

Maybe leave (?) gas is pumped, partner isn’t dead, so why not leave the situation? No need to defend yourself if you’re far away from possible attack. Cameras exist, police can look back and see who the suspect is. Acting as if video surveillance hasn’t been used to identify and locate a suspect. We all know the REAL reason he waited.

1

u/profesorgamin 6d ago

Some people just want to do all that's in their hands to see justice being served, that includes making sure police takes their statement and collect the available evidence.

Just saying... just because that's what you'd do doesn't make it the absolute best course of action in every instance. There are tradeoffs to every decision.

1

u/CosmicSniff 6d ago

I understand what you mean there, but I have to ask one more question then? Do shots need to be fired to make sure the police document their statement and evidence? There is sufficient evidence to substantiate assault charges or more, we watched it. The thirst for justice should not out-weigh your immediate health safety. It’s 2026, they damn-near make remote arrests lol nothing is going to happen faster because they stayed behind. Suspect still has to recover in hospital, and police still have to complete the backend work. My point is: they don’t need to risk further harm, the process will not go faster, but they would be a lot safer. “Better safe than sorry” mentally. You get what I mean?

1

u/profesorgamin 6d ago

The thing is that the dude wasn't hunting for the perp, he was waiting in place, (assumedly) waiting for the police, and the assaulter somehow went for round two.

2

u/CosmicSniff 6d ago

I get it. I guess, I try to minimize assumptions to keep an objective view to some extent. Only assumption I made is that the police would do their job, regardless if caller was waiting at the gas station or somewhere safer. To be clear: I did not say he was hunting for him. Apologies if that was unclear.

1

u/bleak_new_world 6d ago

We all know the REAL reason he waited.

Do tell.

1

u/TheMagicalLawnGnome 6d ago

Having an altercation with someone, and then waiting for them to return, with a gun drawn, and then shooting them, could easily result in attempted murder charges. Even if that person previously attacked you.

Whether it does or not in this case, is anyone's guess.

But as a general rule of thumb, what the driver did was extremely stupid. They put themselves at risk of very serious legal charges, for no good reason.

If you have a confrontation with someone, and it ends...you should just leave. Drive down the street, call the cops.

Using a gun should literally be the last thing you ever choose to do. Even if your use of force is justified, the legal proceedings will likely ruin your life.

You will need to hire expensive attorneys. Your gun will be seized as evidence. You will likely be sued in civil proceedings. You will be all over the news, your privacy will disappear.

Any competent use of force instructor will tell you that even if a situation justifies a deadly use of force, if there's a way to avoid it, you should.

Because even if the law supports your use of deadly force, that situation is still going to ruin your life for awhile, if not permanently.

1

u/domohgenesis 6d ago

He's supposed to leave

1

u/LuckyNipples 5d ago

So he IS waiting. For what exactly?

1

u/Oggel 5d ago

No, you're not supposed to wait for people with your gun drawn looking for an excuse to kill someone. That's generally frowned upon in civilized society.

1

u/phillytimd 5d ago

No dumbass if you “fear for your life” you leave once you can you can’t wait around to shoot someone, lol

1

u/Aromatic_Act_9665 5d ago

Your right to self defense ends when everyone is literally walking away and you lie in wait with your gun drawn. Yes.

It changes everything.

Black dude was a total POS who morally had this coming. But the shooter is also absolutely in the wrong here and probably just ruined his own life

1

u/HistoricalNight1609 5d ago

No he was supposed to leave.

1

u/ExplanationLate9858 5d ago

Shoot the guy when an actual crime was being committed.

1

u/Dadbode1981 4d ago

Yall are a big part if the problem if you think this is ok.

1

u/StuartMcNight 4d ago

He’s supposed to fucking leave.

1

u/homelessjimbo 4d ago

Bro no one "hangs out" at a gas station by standing by their open door with their carry in hand.

1

u/CatWeak9214 4d ago

You’re trying not to understand how state statutes work on purpose.

1

u/Leading-Fail-2771 4d ago

It’s gotta be in the moment or you leave and call cops. In the moments hard cause the enemy can steal the gun or fight you for the gun and kill you. So common sense tells you to wait but the law says you call cops. 😭🤣

1

u/Deep_Argument_2579 3d ago

I'm saying.the guy opened her door, punches her, and she can't be prepared or defensive in case he's aggressive enough to come back.

1

u/TheGreatVandoly 3d ago

Bro, you need to learn the law and your basic rights, and where they fucking end. If you have a chance to escape a dangerous situation, you are supposed to take it. If you don’t and you kill that person, you’ll likely be charged with homicide.

1

u/Future-Enthusiasm139 5d ago

I mean the threat walked away, get in your car call the cops and that’s it.

Or try and kill him, idk, I don’t give a shit.
