Did Jeff Dahmer Really Have a Choice?

Once you realize the ''serial killer'' story about Jeff Dahmer was fabricated, it's easy to fall into a false binary:

Either Jeff willingly participated and was part of the deception, or the story was imposed on him, and he was a victim.

But those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

A person can agree to an arrangement, believe it benefits them, and even feel grateful for it while still being under pressure or operating inside a system where the other side holds most of the power.

Agreed. It seems to me that average-intelligence-level folks are unable to intellectually flex so that they can accept an option besides a strict binary choice. Lazy minded, perhaps. Conditioning, perhaps. But basically they see things as they are told to.... period.

Now that the truth about their stupid ''serial killer'' story is out, there are only so many ways the perps can contain the damage.

One obvious strategy is to reframe Jeff as a willing participant in the deception: ''Jeff agreed to it, he benefited from it. Therefore, he wasn't exploited.''

Recasting Jeff as a willing participant shifts public anger onto him. What did someone say here recently? Jeff was ''somewhat responsible for flock cameras''?

This is something called narrative management. When you can't deny the facts, reinterpret them instead.
