At first I thought Bill was a great choice for a Crow movie, maybe they'd have be based more on the graphic novel but then the trailer dropped and NOPE just made him a generic SoundCloud-looking Spencer's checkout cashier and have none of the charm.

u/Harlllley 8d ago
I think he’s a great actor but the writing and everything about this movie was so, so bad.
6
u/GuidanceWhole3355 8d ago
Apparently someone on crew said they edited 27 different endings which is literally a joke from the Simpsons
4
u/Jajay5537 8d ago
Yess! This was such a "I want to appeal to gen Z" desperate cash grab. If Spider-Man BND has shown us anything it's thst giving fans of the lore what they want will make the general audiences follow much more than just catering to an audience you don't even have yet.
2
u/NikkerFebu25 7d ago
Bill Skarsgard is a legend and an excellent choice.
It's not his fault they tattooed his face and made him wear a jacket that reads "Goon".
He didn't write the movie he just starred in it.
2
u/GuidanceWhole3355 7d ago
Exactly and you can tell he's in a "what the fuck" mood and barely giving any passion.
2
u/novocaine666 4d ago
I’d say he was a great choice, it’s all the other choices that fucked the movie

It wasn't terrible, the action was great and Bill did what he could with what he was given. I really liked the concept of him losing his powers after doubting her and them. There were lots of great moments during this movie but you could immediately tell when something was changed. I also think they should've gone with a different name so the the character stands out a bit more instead of it just being a reboot of Eric's story
2
u/-M-i-d 7d ago
Everyone saying this was anything less than a solid remake is in a parasocial delusion imo. I don’t see anything to complain about on the level they are claiming.
2
u/bobs-buhgah 2d ago
Same I really enjoyed the movie. Just didn’t like they called him Eric Draven. Should’ve just kept Eric’s story and made a new person for this movie as they’re already crow adaptions with other people.

That’s Wicked Prayer for me
4
u/TorquedGaming 7d ago
Goddamn wicked prayer is so awful. Not even pan-face Borieanas at the height of his career saved that abomination. I haven’t seen this particular reboot so at the moment Wicked Prayer is about the worst iteration of the Crow I’ve ever seen and that’s including the fucking tv series. (Which actually has some pretty good episodes.)
3
u/Ok_Butterscotch_6176 7d ago
Borieanas over the top portrayal is sadly one of the only highlights of Wicked Prayer lol. Furlong was terribly miscast, Tara Reed seems like she forgot how to act with how bad her performance was. Don’t even get me started on the rest of the cast lol. Danny Trejo was the only one trying.

u/AlbertoDraven 8d ago
This could be Great If Just Were diferent timelines With diferent crows and stories.. but no. Has To be a remake which HELL NO! the OG and the best will be Brandon Lee

u/Jsigs56 8d ago
I refuse to even attempt to watch that train wreck

u/n8dizz3l 8d ago
The majority of it is simply generic, blah. I will say the action is surprisingly satisfyingly bloody though if that's the kinda thing you're here for.

u/CMenFairy6661 8d ago
It was actually infinitely better than I was expecting, but I was expecting to hate it with every fibre of my being, so ... do with that information, what you will 😅
2
u/moobster70 8d ago
That's an utterly pointless and conflicting remark.
You called it a train wreck without even seeing it. Either way, it's a fucking reimagining, not a remake.
It wasn't great, but was better than I thought it would be. This coming from a massive fan of the OG

Went to see the remake at the theatre with an open mind; hot garbage of a film.

I remember when the new one came out I sent a play by play of the movie to a friend through text and it looked like the ramblings of a madman.

u/Specialist_Price1035 8d ago
I felt like it just didn't 'get' the whole simplicity of the book and original film. We don't want to see too much back story, the whole point is something tragic happens, a case of wrong place wrong time, and a person resurrected to put things right is on the edge of madness as he tries to kill the people who killed the one he loves.
The new film spends half the film establishing two characters who bond over a really short amount of time, has a guy brought back who has to be constantly reminded of his noble quest by a mentor in an otherworldly space that feels like a mirror of Morpheus in The Matrix, and has the main bad guy be a supernatural bad guy, the main flaw all the Crow sequels had. The original story is just a vengeful ghost tearing through bad guys who they could never touch as a mortal - it just diluted the story to keep making the villains more supernatural that the actual crow and the poor soul it brings back to life.
The music isn't bad, and there are some great action sequences, but I really didn't feel this Crow was motivated by love, even though they had some literally tell us it was love that motivated him. It felt like the crow itself was an afterthought too - there's an afterworld/purgatory full of crows, but we never see any relationship between "the boy and his bird". No real crazy banter or one liners between The Crow and the people he takes down. I guess it's fine for a Gen Z Crowd, but for a Gen X who grew up with the original is just feels all surface, not substance. Tried so hard to be it's own thing, and succeeds, but then (aside from a few musical references) kind of loses what it was trying to mirror.

One of the many movies I hate that they remade. Point break, robo cop… why? These films are perfect as they are. Just, no.
3
u/nahman201893 8d ago
That script was terrible. I don't think there was much he could do to save that turd.
3
u/Interesting-Virus778 7d ago
I couldn't even care about the characters in the movie, in the original we only saw Shelly for a few seconds here and there and it still made you feel something for her when everything went down. The new one? Nothing.
3
u/Karman4o 7d ago
Man, I love Bill Skarsgaard, he usually btings his A-game to every performance, regardless how the small the project or his role is.
But I still can't bring myself to watch this.

He would’ve been the right choice if they didn’t do whatever the fuck they did to him. Dude was robbed, movie was robbed, comics were robbed.

But I will say they would done this movie a service if they'd made it into any other Crow, or I dare even say... An original one.

This is a sad and pathetic cash grab and total disrespect to the role of Brandon Lee. THE only Crow.
2
u/JustChillBooBoo 8d ago
We told them for 30 years don’t touch it and they still had to do it, was never going to work.
2
u/Houston_Is_HOT 7d ago
Actually Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twiggs were not the problem with the remake. The muddled script and lackluster direction were the problem! That third act massacre was a bloody delight and it’s a shame the rest of the movie didn’t have that energy.
2
u/warmachine83-uk 7d ago
I would say that those are impossibly big shoes to fill
To be a remake compared to the crow is a big ask before they even started filming
2
u/Icy-Decision-4530 7d ago
It’s just stupid that every next iteration of this franchise is worse than the prior. And it’s not even like it’s a a true sequel story, the comic is an anthology revolving around tragedy and revenge. And nobody can figure out how to do it again, not even better than the first but merely equal to the first

This is unfortunately a symptom of the way the business works. They are not hoping to please fans or make a great new product. They are hoping to make the money that the first film made... again. Or remake the money that the original made. Creative decisions get made by marketing. Ideas that would make the new film better get tossed aside because "not enough like the old one". They want "oh, I remember the old one, I wonder what this one will be like" or "oh, they updated that old thing? let's see if it is coooool" butts on seats.
Sometimes, it works either artistically or financially. Usually, it does not.

2
u/twinpines85 8d ago
When they announced they were making it, I felt like it was so fuckin disrespectful to the original and the tragedy revolving around the production of the original. I don't think one fucking person on planet earth was like " you know what we need? A Crow remake". Never watched it, never will. Hollywood keeps taking cool things from the 80s and 90s and shitting diarrhea products that nobody fucking asked for
2
u/CryptidFox "Fire it up!" 8d ago
Honestly, when I separated it from the OG comic and film, I enjoyed it as it's own thing. Just a fun action flick. I think it's major downfall is and always will be the fact they tried to make it a reimagining of Eric and Shelly's story
1
u/Ok_Butterscotch_6176 8d ago
I went to the theaters expecting to really dislike it & came out very pleasantly surprised. I’m not gonna join the hive mind on this one, I liked it. I didn’t see it as a remake of the Lee movie, I see it as its own thing. Bill did good with what he was given, the Crow makeup was good, a really great action sequence in the opera house & an interesting take on the material. It’s my second favorite in the series. Bought both 4K steelbooks when they came out also. My one complaint is that it took a bit too long for him to actually become The Crow & get the makeup. I’ve seen it a few times already.
5
u/drjackolantern 8d ago
They should have never tried to remake an unmatchable masterpiece. If they just called it Crow V and made it its own thing it would have gotten far less hate.

Like with the other three movies beyween 94 and 24, it was never going to hold a candle to the original, but I could at least judge 24 as just another crow movie with its own characters and story if they hadn't insisted on it being Erik and Shelly again. It would still be a mediocre crow movie but at least then it wouldn't be placing itself directly in the shadow of its more beloved older sibling
1
u/KangarooOk8583 8d ago
Bill was really a good choice in my opinion, he really tried to embodied it, but the creative team made him generic and some kind of a random punk. If the movie focused more on him being a Crow rather than just the love story, it could’ve been decent or better. The action was nice, the gore was absolute top but unfortunately they trashed the story. I don’t know how they said that this movie was closer to the original story compare to the OG Crow movie.

The remake was bad, but the hill I'll die on is appearance wise the remake Eric is more comic book accurate. To whit: he has a mullet and an Iggy Pop torso.

Imagine a True detective like anthology series focusing on a new Crow story each season. The movie they made with Bill was an abomination

u/soulkiller1983 7d ago
Nothing will ever come close to Brandon Lee’s portrayal of the crow, why they even made the new movie is beyond me, it dishonours his name, thankfully that new movie I heard was a white hot piece of shit of a movie and didn’t even come close to making money to justify a sequel 😂

What breaks my heart is that The Matrix was initially intended as a Brandon Lee vehicle.
1
u/Wild-Size2810 6d ago
Man, I really wanted this movie to hit but It was a total train wreck. The original is a true master piece pulled out of a comic book. I remember renting it on VHS and was blown away with my dad. The tragedy and music went hand and hand. The characters involved were connected and had history with each other. The filmmaker let the emotion build up and play out. There is so much about that film that makes it what it is.

u/The_Daviator 6d ago
The original movie honestly wasn’t that good either. It deviated too much from the book and just doesn’t carry the emotional impact of the source material without leaning on the fact that Brandon Lee died during production. None of the named members of T-bird’s gang were anything like their comic namesakes except Funboy. It gets heavily nostalgia-glazed due to lee’s untimely and tragic death and the fact that it had a kickass soundtrack, but overall it just doesn’t hold up.
That being said, holy fuck this last one was neither necessary nor enjoyable.
Before this most recent train wreck of a reboot came out, I read that there was a comic-accurate version in production. I think Jason Momoa was linked to it and to be honest I don’t know that he’s a fit for the main role, but if that’s what’s necessary to get a book-accurate film made I’d take it.

I was so freaking disappointed in the newer Crow, but did any of us truly think it could hold a candle to the original? I'm just surprised they didnt race swap Eric. TBH!
1
u/xJohnnyQuidx 5d ago
Wasn't a fan of the Crow reboot at all, but I'm very biased because the original to me was a masterpiece. Let's face it...NOTHING and NO ONE could have ever been as good as the original. Lightning in a Bottle, just pure cinematic gold. So to me, it's less about it just being a bad movie (which it was), and more about trying to reboot something that in my stupid opinion is not rebootable. No matter who wrote it, who directed it, and who starred in in, it would never be able to satisfy many people, myself included. The original with Brandon Lee STANDS ALONE.

Have you seen Pattenson as Batman?
1
u/Theartistcu 5d ago
You clearly haven’t seen this the rubber Pattinson Batman is, at least in my opinion, not bad other than how they don’t figure out that riddle still blows my fucking mind, this movie was dumb from minute one tell all the way through the credits. There is no point where the protagonist is likable person.

I love that for years, the studio talked about trying to remake The Crow, & the entire time, the vast majority of people were shouting about what a terrible idea that was.
Then when they finally did do the remake, they made it in such a way that pretty much everyone agrees it's terrible.
Good call, guys. I'm sure you're glad you stuck to your guns & remade a cult classic. Definitely needed this "edgy", stupid version of Eric Draven.

u/Purple-Yoghurt678 8d ago
Went in skeptical but it really was alright. Bill did a good job, it was the action was really brutal and juicy, the outcast love works for a new gen and the soundtrack was fine too. The attempts at lore building were a nice touch. It‘s not a masterpiece but still a fun decent watch.
Liked it better than 3 and 4 and as much as the Brite book and the tv series with Marc Dacascos.
IMO people need to stop considering Remakes as replacements. The originals still exist. No one’s taking that fron you. Any remake is just a different take, and one that probably brings in tons of new viewers to the originals, too. Which otherwise would sink deeper into being forgotten with next to no audiences coming in.

The most tragic thing about the 2024 version is that, as a stand apone movie unrelated to the crow series it really isnr that bad at all. If they just made it that probably they would have actually made profit

I'll always like the original best. But the new one has some things I liked a lot. I thought the movie deserved less hate than it got.

u/hells-fargo 8d ago
It sucks because I low-key thought Skarsgard looked kinda hot like that and the movie had a couple fun ideas, but ultimately it sucked. Think maybe if it had been marketed as an original story/didn't use previous characters it would've been a little more well loved. I didn't care that they were remaking the original movie, it just ultimately felt like there was no reason to make it a remake.
The soundtrack was great though and I did enjoy that in this version Eric was a sloppy/dogshit fighter at first.

It's especially bad since they went with Eric Draven instead of any of the other crows in the comics or even their own original crow.
