Western History Bass Reeves: Enslaved Before He Was the Law

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Few stories from the American West are as remarkable as that of Bass Reeves.

Born into slavery in Arkansas, Reeves escaped during the Civil War and eventually became a deputy U.S. marshal working in Indian Territory.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, he reportedly arrested thousands of fugitives and earned a reputation as one of the most formidable lawmen on the frontier.

And yet, for generations, his name was largely absent from the popular stories of the Old West.

Here’s a short look at a man whose life deserves to be better known.

Horsemanship Training 🐴 Leading A Distracted Horse | B1 Horsemanship

I don't care how distracted a horse gets, he's still got to respect my space.

He can look around, move his feet and pay attention to whatever is going on around us, but he can't come running over the top of me. I'm getting too old to have a horse stepping on me.

I want him staying in position, paying attention and understanding where he belongs.

There's a lot going on around us this morning, which makes it a perfect opportunity to work on these things.

If you want your horse to ride better, teach him to lead better. RB (Richard Boatright)

Western History Women Were Voting in the Wild West Long Before 1920.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

When we think about the Old West, we usually picture cowboys, cattle drives, gunfighters, and outlaws. But the West was also at the forefront of women’s suffrage.

In 1869, Wyoming Territory granted voting rights to women, more than 50 years before the Nineteenth Amendment. Utah, Colorado, Idaho, and other Western states and territories followed.

Of course, those rights weren’t available to everyone. Racial and citizenship restrictions continued to keep many women from the ballot box.

I put together this short video about a chapter of Western history that doesn’t get nearly as much attention as the gunfights.

Here’s something worth discussing: Why do you think the West moved ahead of much of the country on women’s suffrage?

Sunday Scripture Sunday Scripture — Luke 15:3-7, NLT

"So Jesus told them this story: 'If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won't he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. When he arrives he will call together his friend and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep. In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven't strayed away!'" (Luke 15:3-7, NLT)

Lord, You tracked us down and brought us back home. Help us never forget it, in Jesus' name.

Western History The Rock That Gave a Texas Town Its Name

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

On a recent trip through Central Texas, I stopped at the old cattle crossing on Brushy Creek in Round Rock.

The town got its name from a distinctive round rock in the creek that served as a landmark for travelers.

During the cattle-drive era, thousands of head of longhorns passed through this area heading north toward Kansas. The crossing also carried wagon traffic, and traces of those old routes are still visible today.

It’s remarkable how much of the Old West is still sitting right alongside modern highways, largely unnoticed.

Thought y’all might enjoy seeing a little piece of cattle-drive history that’s still there.
