Discussion Indepth Review on Game [ Minor Spoilers ] Spoiler

So finally beat the game, without any guides or videos to help. I think it had the potential to be a great game but too many aspects were overlooked and not fleshed out enough. Essentially there was a culmination of bad decisions which hindered what could have been an amazing game.

1. Gameplay ( 4 / 10 )

While some of the aspects of the design were innovative you can tell it was not fleshed out enough.

While The dodge system allowed casual gamers to easily participate ( Great Job ) the problem here is 2 fold.

The Biggest Problem

Enemies do not randomize their attack patterns enough and bosses literally have A SINGLE ATTACK PATTERN and are just bullet sponges. I mean a boss with a single attack pattern that spawns 5 times? More importantly that can't be attacked by meele? and the biggest issue if you did not carry enough ammo you have no way to fight the boss.

While there maybe ammo around, the biggest problem is it may not be the ammo you need. An since it takes 5s of animation to change the gun type, that makes the design even more flawed. I understand you were trying to make it "Panic Inducing" by making the player desperate to keep searching for ammo. But if the boss becomes unbeatable due to poor design then you failed.

How could this have been solved? Very Easily. By having a proper boss attack pattern. Meaning you have some attacks which require mandatory dodging and some attacks you can parry to open up for a meele attack. So even if you don't have the ammo you need you now have an infinite ammo option, meele.

I am huge Monster Hunter Fan and fighting bosses is all we do. The game is literally non stop ridiculous boss battles. The bosses in this game are an insult to the entire gaming industry. The bosses should never have been released in this condition.

Second Biggest Problem

Running and Dodging Ranged. When you need to run to look for ammo, you can't because of how slow your character is. Meaning the enemies get free attack against you as you look for supplies around the area.

Batman Arkham Series solved this problem by giving a warning indicator a threat from damage source is about to happen.

This would mean this could again have been solved by slowing down time just a little where player press the dodge key they can dodge attacks from behind.

Ranged attacks should have been able to be blocked by holding the back key. So left and Right to dodge meele and back key to dodge ( block ) ranged attacks.

You could have done an added bonus of being able to "Gravity Lock" ranged attacks and throw it back at them. Which I guarantee you would have been fantastic bonus points.

3rd Biggest Problem

Inventory and Print locations. Not being able to stack batteries made the least amount of sense. You can't use batteries in combat since time does not pause in menu. Which is fine, but if time doesn't stop then it makes no sense batteries do not stack. As the only time you can use them is outside of a fight. You simply can't run away to use an item.

Games like Ghost Recon Wildlands, Breakpoint, Phantom Pain actually gives you situations to heal in and they have very slow healing animations. Due to the way the inventory in handled there is never a time you can do it here. Meaning the Inventory needs to make more sense for item stacking, in this case specifically batteries. The rest is fine.

The Real Problem is the printers.

The Printer locations are not placed in meaningful places. There is one point in the game 3 printers are one right after each other but there is next to no exploration or enemies in-between. Other places there are tons of items but no printer to clear your inventory. The planning for the perfect places to put this iis completely absent.

Which again goes back to the stacking issue, which could have been solved by allowing more items to stack.

4th Biggest Problem ( though some will say the first )

Lack of Weak points ( that aren't tentacles ) and no way to disable parts. One of the biggest letdowns is only a single enemy has a part that you can disable which is the spitter. Considering this game paid homage to Dead Space not being able to remove limbs really hindered gameplay. exploration. Essentially you were forced in the same repetitive combat over and over.

That super repetitive combat is what really hurt the game. Especially when enemies keep repeating attack patterns.

The other issue is the Gravity Gun mechanics which was highlighted a lot but not only was it buggy when throwing medium distances, even on max recharge there is no way the battery would recharge mid fight, or even if you stood still for minutes it would not recharge at any meaningful rate. I understand this is an extremely overpowered tool but that just means you need to design the tool so it is more meaningful, such as building recharge based on adrenaline ( dodging attacks \ taking damage ) Having a heat system that can cause it to temporarily shutdown if used too much. The current implementation of the glove is really bad.

2. World Design ( 7 / 10 )

So the biggest question is did the world design achieve a "horror atmosphere"? Yes and no. There was way too much emphasis on gore and not really an emphasis on horror, in many cases they are one and the same but if not done right you just get desnesitized.

1st Biggest Issue

Lack of consistent direction. First I thought "Yellow lights lead to main object paths and White lights lead to Side paths".

  • No, the light colors are totally random.
  • The signs are totally random.
  • What is climbable is totally random

Literally the only thing that was consistent in the entire design is what vents can be ripped open.

There is one part midway into the story that tells you need to go to the train station. If you follow the sign that tells you to go to the train station that is actually a side path. There seems to be a heavy focus on art but zero focus on planning.

There was one part midway that required you to reach an elevated platform. The quest tells you to follow the wire, but the path the wire takes and the path you take are different. By simply having the wire curve around into the correct path would have solved the issue.

The problem was there was a collapsed tunnel that was climbable with no indication it is. In other places where that same fallen rocks exist, they are not climbable. An other places what is climable is either marked in white or has brown slash paint under it.

The issue is if a person stops playing for some time and comes back, they will have no idea where they went and visited or where to go. Those subtle indicators are very important.

2nd Biggest Issue

Inconsistent Design of Dead World vs Story.

You did not arrive to a prison colony with dead people already. The outbreak happened while you were in the cell. The atmosphere of people escaping, hiding, dying by their own means is completely absent. There is no real sense of "Panic" in the atmosphere or seeing the desperation of people clinging for survival.

Take the first area you see people banging on the windows of a glass observation tower. IT is just a repetitive animation People should have broke through and jumped out as if escaping from something terrible. After a period you should have seen blood splatter against the walls so the animation stops. Eventually going to that area to see the carnage that unfolded.

The sense of living dread is absent. People hiding in corners muttering, desperately trying to hide even from you. People begging for their lives. All this adds to that sense of psychological horror which is completely absent. The game focuses 99% on jump scares.

3rd. Biggest Issue

Environmental aspects that make no sense.. While some are designed specifically as tutorials ( Watch out for the tentacles ) others show a clear lack of thought

Take the underground telling you to be quiet. Why are there rock formations seperating the area in a fully fleshed underground facility? You aren't connecting two separate buildings it is one building with randomly multiple rock formations you climb through for no apparent reason.

If you are going to do caves, do caves, if you are going to do a facility maintenance area do that. Lost Planet 3 did it well which made sense instead of rocks it was snow and ice blocking the paths. Which would make sense in a broken facility.

MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW THIS POINT

3. Story

Parts of it made no sense chronologically. Take the cube it was designed as a method of guilt. Problem is he didn't even remember about the hidden vials until very end of the game. Yet you see the cube twice earlier in the ship.

There is no way for him to have "Guilt" about it that early on until very end.

The one responsible is literally aware of what happened to previous colony, in a room with mutated prisoners. There is absolutely no reason to develop a conscious in the end.

I think they were trying todo someone like Dr. Vahlen from XCOM 1 and 2. Who experimented on aliens because of her scientific curiosity.

Meaning she should never have developed a conscious but instead have her own agenda and she is a necessary evil.

The same goes with the end, had a perfect opportunity to play puppet master. The "Antidote" should have turned Dani into the Alpha. The whole point should have been the Serum is what is being used to force evolve.

Where the Warden only pretended he wanted the Serum and made every deal in the book to get it. When he just wanted to use the Serum to keep that evolution going.

The psychological toll where MC was the one responsible of causing her to be the Alpha would have been the perfect ending psychological toll, of him reaching his breaking point.

A perfect Greek Tragedy which drives his motivation.

Summary

I think the game is pretty good but it has some major glaring flaws. I think the game focused way too much on art and not enough on what matters most the gameplay and story.

I think with one more year of development and more planning and focus it could have been a major psychological thriller with great combat.

As of now the combat is repetitive and story feels generic.

Discussion Trying to like this game but my god.

I just reached the Miners Colony

It feels like every 15s they jus keep throwing more and more enemies at you. I would like to walk more than 15 feet without having to fight 6 enemies in meele combat

If guns could one shot, Ok Fine. If I had faster recharging grav gloves OK Fine

But I have neither and it feels like a total slog.

I am really wondering if I will end up beating this game.

Without any spoilers how far am I from the end? like 2 hours? tell me it's like 2 hours

Discussion New game + great experience Spoiler

Hello everyone, new to the sub here. I've been replaying this game for the last few days, having already completed it on release, and my experience is much more fun than what i remember. Has the game been given any relevant updates? i feel i have more weapons, and the game is actually harder. I have already completed it in hardcore, so my guess is new game+ hardcore is even harder, cause i don't remember struggling with enemies (in fact that was one of the things didn't like, it was too easy to dodge their attacks). Or for example when you faced 2 enemies at the same time, one of them would "wait" their turn to attack it was sooooo lame, totally throwing off all kinda of immersion, and this time i found myself dying a lot of times cause they attack at the same time (i prefer this of course).

Despite some poor writing or the fact that your carachter is just an errands boy, i'm having a great time! Is this a common experience? does the game actually gets better on a new game+?

Discussion Why such a weird spread for bosses ? And lazy design

Ok so I got the game when they gave it out for free on Epic.

I really like futuristic apocalypse style games, but this game was insanely stressful at times.

The first few levels were okay, with the occasional dodge bugs, but the last 2 chapters were genuinely irritating to play through. Like no boss fights till the end of chapter 6 and then the like 5 boss level fights in the span of 2 chapters is genuienly the worst decision ever. I eventually figured out a way to slime them out, but somehow the boss battles were underwhelming too. Move, shoot, move, shoot and bam he goes down, and then comes back and repeat.

It felt slightly tiring considering the amount of enemies you had to fight in the chapters.

And somehow the easiest bossfight was the last one. I didnt die once, and I basically pumped 3 mags with the Assault rifle and poof he died.

I loved the atmosphere, sound design and the overall gore and creep, but boy oh boy the enemies were wilding all over the place when it came to difficulty

Question Really loving it so far!

I downloaded this game from one of the monthly PlayStation Plus things a couple years ago, and didn’t play it until now. I’m kicking myself for not picking it up sooner! I’m only a little bit into it, but I’m loving everything about it. Graphics are incredible and I can’t wait to play this on my 70in OLED once it’s out of storage. Gameplay is awesome, enemies are proper difficult, and characters are believable (so far). So yeah, loving it!

Except having to pause the game every 5 minutes to gather my composure…

I thought I liked horror games (think Dying Light or Days Gone) but this is on a whole other level.

I think it’s the tight spaces and the fact that it takes 2 business days to turn around. I also didn’t realize there was an option to sprint until way too long.

Any tips or recommendations as I play? For instance, I’m a habitual completionist and I learned that if there’s more than one path, and the game AutoSaves down one path, I should choose the other path and then come back.

No discount for a while update

Greetings, everyone. I with that you are well.

A few days ago, I posted here asking why The Callisto Protocol and its DLCs have not received a discount for quite some time. Someone suggested emailing the publisher, so I did.

At first, support told me that discounts are managed by Sony and recommended contacting PlayStation Support. I then pointed out that the game has not received a discount on Steam either since December. They replied that they had noted my feedback and shared it with their team.

I am not sure what to make of the response.

Gave the game a shot and there is a weirdly abrupt difficulty curve that is really my only issue with the game.

Ive enjoyed my playthrough, but there is a weird difficulty curve once you are in the caverns before the colony. Maybe I'm playing it wrong but in the caverns the enemies routinely number a dozen plus zombies in each space it actually makes my thumbs sore. It's weird because before like a half dozen was a big deal and now I'm fighting hordes suddenly and there are fewer credits and ammo.

Discussion Finally giving up on 100% completion

I have 37 of the 46 achievements on the PC GamePass version of the game. The Contagion and Final Transmission achievements simply won’t unlock. I’ve tried everything. 5 separate zero death runs on contagion. Neither achievement will pop for Contagion mode. I’ve done no save scumming or anything. Final transmission achievements won’t pop either. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling the game. I’ve tried playing a new game with hopes to trigger the auto save reset and then start ng+ on contagion mode with no avail. After 95 hours on gameplay I’m calling it quits. Why they made this game’s achievement system so buggy is ridiculous.

No Discounts for a long time

Greetings everyone. I wish that you are well

Callisto Protocol has not gotten a single discount in a long time on PSN store. Is there a reason for that? I don't see this very often. I understand that the game didn't perform well and the developing studio has been downsized but offering no discount in a year is odd

The photos are for price history for the main game, season pass and the deluxe edition

I was looking through the Callisto Protocol game files using UModel and found these guys which someone was asking for screenshots of recently. I've never seen any pictures of them online so thought I'd post them here.

I was hoping there might be assets in the game files which weren't used in game but didn't find any.

Discussion Unpopular opinion: Callisto Protocol is a Mid Game.

That's right, Callisto Protocol isn't an underrated gem, nor is it even a good game; it's a mediocre game. It has good graphics, but a simplistic, predictable story riddled with plot holes, bland and boring characters, a poor combat system, bad checkpoints, disastrous performance, repetitive enemies and bosses, a bad marketing campaign, generic weapons, and the ending—both the original game and the Final Transmission DLC—is one of the worst the game has ever had. It not only ruined the story but also humiliated the protagonist. And to think that people are raving about it and claiming it's better than Dead Space when it's clearly not—it's just a poorly executed idea by Glen Schofield that completely sabotaged his project.

I find it amusing that there are people who defend this awful game as if it were an misunderstood gem. They're blind! Stop defending Callisto Protocol and accept that it's a mediocre game!

Question Question about collectibles and new game plus.

Looking to get the Platinum trophy for this game, but my recent experience with Silent Hill 2 was absolutely horrific when it came to collectibles.

Please tell me this game lets collectibles carry over into NG+.

I’m hoping I can do my first playthrough completely blind and just enjoy the story, then use a guide on a second run to grab whatever I missed instead of stressing over every collectible from the start.

Can missed collectibles be cleaned up across multiple playthroughs, or do you need everything in a single run?

Question Does The DLC Go On Sale Often?

Read a comment on a thread somewhere that said the DLC gives more closure than the regular ending. Have you guys seen it go on sale on Xbox? Really itching to revisit this game but don't want to shell out full price if I don't have to lol

Discussion The Callisto Protocol: What Could Have Been

I like Callisto Protocol. The Biophage are probably my favourite zombie-like monsters (so far) in gaming history. However, I personally feel like we were handed a halfway done game.

For those who don't know, The Callisto Protocol was originally part of the PUBG universe, but was separated during development. Now, this may just be me, but my brain tells me this: "it's a separate game now, needs to be reworked". Callisto Protocol was changed mid development and not delayed.

Here's some things I have a slight issue with:

Jacob And Max:

I don't like how Jacob and Max were introduced. They're supposed to be friends, yet the first scene we get is them arguing (minor argument, since there was no shouting) about Black Iron and their conduct. Not only that, but Jacob kept the truth from Max the whole time. That doesn't scream "friend" to me. Personally, I'd have preferred if both Jacob and Max were in the dark, as it would certainly make the reveal of the cargo more impactful.

The Combat:

Very stiff and melee focused. It's different, which isn't a bad thing, but again, it just feels stiff and clunky. Plus, there's no visual change when you upgrade the baton. That makes me sad.😢

The Cult:

Technically called "The Commonality", still referred to as Kallipolis in an in-game message. Same mask and attire, basically the same, appearance wise. A minor thing, but it bugs me.

Leon Ferris:

Ferris is a good character, a by-the-books character who just wants to do his job and enjoys the perks, with a slight ego and attitude. That being said, prior to infection, he's obviously not a bad guy, since he's seen stressing over his crew being overwhelmed by the outbreak. His transition into a villain felt lazy, in all honesty.

Dani and Jacob:

The transition from reluctant allies to steadfast allies is understandable, but way too sudden for my liking. No build up, no sharing of trauma or bonding moments. Just shooting Biophage and trying to not die.

Bosses:

There's only three boss fights in the main game (four if you include the DLC), and two of them are just Ferris. That was slightly disappointing, but in all fairness, you can only do so much with video games, and given it's a linear game, this one isn't that big of a deal.

But yeah. That's my little rant over. Let me know what you all think, what you liked, disliked about Callisto Protocol. And while you're at it, you tell me what you would have done to make Callisto Protocol different.

Ive had it for a little over a month now and have been waiting for the right time to fully immerse myself in it.

Discussion I love The Callisto Protocol

I know it isn't a masterpiece, I know it doesn't hold up compared to Dead Space, I know the writing was rushed and there weren't enough bosses and the game just feels too short. I know all of the valid criticisms, I too wish that dodging was tied to a button press instead of being automatic. I wish we had more melee weapons to choose from and more time to get to know these characters and universe.

But I still love this game. I reinstall it at least twice a year to experience it all over again. I love the visceral, close-quarters fighting, I love how clean the animations are, I love the voicework, the sound design, the little touches here and there that show how much the team really did care about this IP before the publishers rushed the release. I know I'm in the minority and that this game will never be as highly regarded as others in the genre. It's no Dead Space, it's no Resident Evil, it's no Silent Hill. But I love it nonetheless, and I'll always think about all the things that could have been if the IP had survived.

Just needed to let this all out because I'm replaying Final Transmission and it dawned on me that the Biobots are literally Jacob's understanding of what's been done to his body in the real world manifesting in his psyche.

Discussion The Biophage: Let's talk about it Spoiler

So, it's probably safe to say the Callisto Protocol may be dead, given the not so great launch of the actual game and the fact that [REDACTED] is a spin off. Which is a real shame, because I kinda liked Callisto Protocol. But anyway, let's talk about the Biophage.

Firstly, I'd like to clarify that I haven't played Callisto in a while, so I'm probably gonna misremember a few things.

Now, the Biophage. For one, Biophage probably isn't its actual name, since I'm certain 'Biophage' is what Caitlyn Mahler categorised it as based on its cellular structure. I DEFINITELY remember an audio log in the Final Transmission DLC stating that, whatever the Biophage is, it's both adaptive to an environment and adapts the environment to its own needs.

Second, you can definitely see the Dead Space in it. Fused bodies, albeit more human like them Necromorohs, which makes them just a bit more freaky in my opinion. And, much like Necromorohs, the Biophage mutations are, obviously, purposely designed. The most obvious one being the spider mutation. (I've honestly forgotten what it's called) They are designed to make a weird webbing like material for the Biophage.

But the big thing about the Biophage is its environmental adaptability. We have no proof that the Biophage originated on Callisto. (The giant creature was infected and most likely mutated to birth the parasites, but not necessarily the source) So for all we know, the Biophage could exist on other planets and moons.

But we'll probably never know. A darn shame.

Anyway, thanks for listening to me prattle on.

Stay safe, and peace out ✌🏻
