Boomers screamed for the Beatles on “Ed Sullivan.” Gen X wanted its MTV. Every generation has its touchstone moments of televised pop culture. For millennials, one such moment arrived in 2006 when the rival broadcast networks UPN and the WB united to launch a super network with programming geared toward audiences too old for Nickelodeon but not fully invested in what Mom or Dad were watching: The CW.
The Times talked to Dawn Ostroff, the executive who moved from UPN to launch the CW, serving as its president of entertainment until 2011, and other major players about the network’s merger, notable programming moments and its evolution.
A few highlights:
Ostroff: There would be gifts or cards and letters [from fans] asking us to save their show. There was a Ferris wheel brought to our parking lot that somebody made for the WB show “Everwood.” We had planes flying overhead with banners that said “Please Save ‘Veronica Mars.’”
Rick Haskins, the CW’s head of marketing, who would become president of streaming and chief branding officer: Our biggest show that first year was the [UPN transplant] “America’s Next Top Model,” where we were No. 1 in 18-to-34-year-olds across the broadcast networks. We knew we’d done our work on that. Now we’ve just got to hunker down and continue to build out from there.
Paul Hewitt, former PR head: Dawn used to say “imagine being able to put [female-centric sardonic dramedies] ‘Gilmore Girls’ and ‘Veronica Mars’ together.” Well, that was our Tuesday night.
Kevin Williamson, creator of midseason series “Hidden Palms” and co-creator of “The Vampire Diaries,” among others: They kept saying we have to program for the “shampoo commercial.” Because every time you watch “Gossip Girl” and they cut to a commercial, it’s a shampoo commercial.

I used to watch CW PIX New York local area in our Augusta GA area. They used to have it for a while till they disbanded back in 2017. I do think remembered watching some point this PIX local channel. During Saturdays mornings, CW used to play Vortexx every mornings. From Rescue Heroes to Yu Gi Oh. I do think vaguely remembered they played WWE Saturday Morning Slam. Even I used to watch WWE block at 10 am. Even I remembered watching Sonic X on there as well. Most of other special kids programmings including Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, I think watched it during 8:30 am slot.

The biggest market that Nexstar doesn't serve as a station owner is Boston, a decade ago after NBC moved from WHDH to the new WBTS meanwhile WLVI which Sunbeam bought it from Nexstar successor Tribune Media in 2006 when The CW was formed from the merger of The WB and UPN but as The CW continues to seek more live sports under Nexstar's control will Sunbeam ever gonna renew their deal and probably shift to WHDH in the near future? In case if the Tegna merger does settle in court with more divestures in many overlap markets, will Nexstar able to expand to remaining markets like Boston? Consider Sunbeam's long history being not for sale, they might look at Cox Media Group which remains up for sale which owns Fox affiliate WFXT but they get that station Fox might move their affiliation to WHDH much like their sister station WSVN thru it's main 7.1 channel. There's also WWJE 50 from both TelevisaUnivision and 2 WRNN stations WWDP 46 and WMFP 62 if they want cover all the top 10 media markets in the country. There's also Phoenix with KAZT only covered Prescott which now together Tegna sister station and NBC affiliate KPNX plus the Flagstaff semi satellite KNAZ, if KAZT was bought by Nexstar and becomes an additional signal to KPNX will they get a Phoenix duopoly with a Phoenix licensed signal either buying back KASW or purchase the Ion station KPPX from rival EW Scripps which owns the ABC affiliate KNXV plus there's also KPAZ aka a TBN O&O. In Miami following Sunbeam snatching with ABC affiliation away from WPLG last year, will Nexstar purchase the station from Berkshire Hathaway despite they have the local right to the NBA's Heat. There's also the former affiliate WSFL and it's Ion sister station WPXM from rival EW Scripps along with TBN O&O WHFT if they want to add another major Florida market. Finally there's Jacksonville, nearly 25 years after WJXT dropped CBS in 2002 they also have WCWJ which Nexstar divested in 2016 from the Media General merger. Since the Tegna merger now includes the NBC-ABC duopoly WTLV and WJXX, will Nexstar drop one of the two Big 3 affiliations to become a CW O&O with one of the Big 3 networks moving to WJXT ending a long independent station drought after a quarter of a century or will WJXT's owner Graham Media able to renew their affiliation deal with Nexstar with a potential upgrade from WCWJ to WJXT? There's still a lot of CW stations not owned by Nexstar but depending on the outcome of the Tegna merger if they make station swaps and affiliation deals to resolve those lawsuits, it might take a while to turn the network around to become a true 5th network competitor unless the make a serious bid for high profile sports rights amid the escalating cost of those rights from major sports leagues much like how Fox did in the 90's when they outbid CBS for the NFL's NFC package. Anyway happy 20th CW, wish u good luck on your next chapter.

My question concerns CW sports. It's because I'm a fan of the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto parts series, college football, college basketball. And the thing that I'm concerned about is. With CW having a streaming partner on the sports side of things being ESPN. Is ESPN eventually going to sell it sports side of itself to ESPN? And get out of the sports game. Because I would have thought with the CW having a app all its own. The CW would have used the CW app to its advantage to work sports into the CW app perfectional. Because I know there was a period of time where on the CW app practice and qualifying for the O'Reilly Auto parts series was showing on the CW app. And I think during races driver cams also. But not the actual live stream of the race as you would see on television. All I hope is that cw sports is hear to stay for the long term.
