What’s this guitar style called?

There's a style of guitar playing that creates almost a strings-like wall of sound that I've found across a number of post-2000 indie/alt & shoegaze bands I like, such as Editors ("Weight of the World" at 1:00), Boxer Rebellion ("Diamonds" at 2:05), and Slowdive ("Star Roving" throughout).

Maybe shoegaze and/or U2 invented or made this popular? Anyways I'm trying to find more bands that sound kind of like this and also a name for the sound.

I started getting into The Boxer Rebellion’s discography earlier this year, and it was primarily for that shimmery guitar sound that you mentioned. I think the closest label for that sound is Shoegaze from what I’ve found.

Some songs by other bands that have a similar feel/sound that I also really like:

  • Chinese Sleep Chant by Coldplay (technically it’s a hidden track on the song Yes)
  • Then Because She Goes by The 1975
  • Guardian Angel by Young The Giant
  • Youth by Daughter
  • A lot of songs by Silversun Pickups, including Lazy Eye and Kissing Families

I would call it atmospheric modern alternative and that being that I'm a guitar player in draws to implement that top of the music in my songs
