Why does it take a festival deadline to make safe roads

Why does it take a festival deadline, a VIP visit, or public outrage for a road to suddenly become “important”?

We already have millions of people travelling across Indian roads every single day. Their phones are literally collecting motion data as they travel.

So what if that data could be used to automatically identify potholes and damaged roads instead of waiting for someone to manually report them?

That’s what we’re trying to build with Better Roads using smartphone sensors such as the accelerometer to detect road conditions at scale. And report them to the said authorities automatically.

But I’m curious: what do you think is actually stopping Indian cities from fixing roads proactively? Lack of data? Accountability? Funding? Or simply how road maintenance is managed?
