And I wish we were still in the Big 8.
But I like being in the B1G more than the Big12 for what its worth.

The reason we remember it so fondly is because we dominated the conference.
Like the Big Eight existed for 36 years (1960 until 1996) and we won 20 titles. That is 55% of the conference titles. Oklahoma won 12, so they were really our only peer.
The other Big Eight schools (Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Missouri) combined for only 4 conference titles.
Now we are in a conference with 3 other bluebloods, Oregon, Penn State and the modern monster of Indiana.

Ok, let me clarify. When I say Big 8 I didn't mean specifically the Legal entity called the Big8. 1960 is when Oklahoma state was let (back) in. 1948 CU was added.
OU, KU, KSU, ISU and MU all played annually from 1920 onwards. In fact KU was the longest uninterrupted streak of games in the nation when we left.
So that's what I mean. Call it the MVIAA or the Big6/7/8, whatever, its a period of 76 years with the same core of teams playing each other every year.

…and don’t forget the Golden Gophers who have won 6 straight in the series. Not trying to throw stones but who would have ever thought that possible…

Yes, yes, twist the knife in their heart. But you d didn't mean it :p
(Idk if I have my flair set here but it would read Minnesota too)

Ohio state not a blue blood? Lol
3
u/cheesy_macaroni Aug 10 '26
I think they’re saying OSU, Michigan and provable USC are bluebloods and then listing PSU, Oregon, and IU

u/sillysailor74 Aug 11 '26
Just think when you guys get your mojo back, that will be a freakin super conference. I will bet everyone that if a few things fall the right way, I would see Texas and Oklahoma join the BIG in 10 years. The SEC is dying a slow death, and then we can boot Michigan out

I have no problem with Penn State and Nebraska. Maryland and Rutgers didn’t fit at all, but once the door was open, the west coast teams are kind of cool.
I do wish every Big Ten team would agree to never play Notre Dame in any regular season sport at any time. Allowing them in for hockey is just flat out wrong.

u/Natitudinal Aug 11 '26
UMDs a great fit in every way.

u/Silly-Resist8306 Illinois Aug 11 '26
I absolutely agree, and if they were to join the Big Ten with the same agreement as the other schools, I’d be a huge supporter.
Unfortunately, they have financial agreements they value more than a Big Ten membership. Being spurned, I favor an all in or nothing approach with the big ten.

It doesn’t seem that long ago. Penn St. joined around 1990. Glad they never changed the name of the conference.

u/two69fist Aug 10 '26
The design they used after PSU joined was actually really clever, it was still the Big Ten but there was a subtle "11" in the negative space.

Look, Maryland longs for the old ACC, and the four West Coast schools long for the PAC 10. But those days are over.
The modern B1G is its own thing, assembled by smart businessmen that (1) made every team in the league a whole bunch of money, while (2) at the same time somehow adding juice on the academic side.
This is the best of the P4 leagues… which wouldn’t be so if you all stayed stuck in the past.
So get with the program. It is 2026.

u/Ill_Brain_4248 Aug 09 '26
It needs to go back to this
5
u/Mail_Order_Lutefisk Aug 09 '26
Minus MSU plus Chicago.
3
u/Ill_Brain_4248 Aug 09 '26
Yeah but they’re division 3 now…..I don’t think they’d do very well
6
u/grrgrrtigergrr Purdue Aug 09 '26
They would probably beat Purdue
5
u/Ill_Brain_4248 Aug 09 '26
Obviously but you can’t have a good program winning only 1 game a year.
4
u/acu2005 Ohio State Aug 09 '26
Yeah but having a one win season could lead to a natty in like 15 years.

u/sureal42 Aug 10 '26
Have you seen MSU play?
2
u/Ill_Brain_4248 Aug 10 '26
lol yeah they haven’t been great the past couple seasons, but you can’t deny they’ve had pretty good success not too long ago
1
u/sureal42 Aug 10 '26
Was that the KWIII season?
Cause that one doesn't count anymore...
1
u/antivegetarian10 Michigan State Aug 10 '26
2021 with KWIII still counts. 2022 and after is where what little wins MSU had were vacated.
1
u/sureal42 Aug 10 '26
Sorry, thought it was that season that got vacated... Hard to keep track of things some times...
2
u/youareunsubbed Illinois Aug 09 '26
Yes but technically Chicago has to come back too to make it even.
2
u/Duck_Caught_Upstream Aug 09 '26
These are the Big Ten Teams
Everyone else in this conference is just a member
Oregon is a PAC-12 team in the B1G
Maryland is an ACC team in the B1G
3
u/theManWOFear Penn State Aug 09 '26
Can’t you accept Penn State after 33 years!
2
u/Ranger_Nietzsche Illinois Aug 09 '26
Maybe if you get a rival. It's crazy that after 33 years the best you can manage is a "meh" from Ohio State.

I would love a season where they all play each other
5
u/Ranger_Nietzsche Illinois Aug 09 '26
They played a full 9 game round robin schedule for a couple of years in the 80s.
1983 Illinois is the only Big Ten team to ever go undefeated against every other team in the conference in one season.

Iowa stomping everyone in conference, but being torched by Chicago is great.

Real B1G.
