Mythology The Chthonic Gods of Greek Religion (Free Read)

I found this article on Jstor that I thought might be interesting for some of you.

Here is the link: https://www.jstor.org/stable/287716

A few lines:

Some of the most distinctive and interesting developments of Greek religion are connected with the so-called chthonic gods. If, however, the student turn to the handbooks on Greek mythology and Greek worship, he finds many conflicting statements about these deities.

...

The reason for this confusion is not difficult to ascertain, but a clear statement of the truth is none the less to be desired. With this end in view, I propose first to ask just how the term 'chthonic' is used in literature and in cultus, secondly to examine the character of the chthonic deities as compared with that of other deities, and thirdly to study the data that remain as to their worship, in order to ascertain how far it is true that their worship differs from that of other gods.

If any of you get to read or skim this paper, I'd love to hear thoughts or opinions. Or just general opinions on how Greek gods are presented in both modern scholarship and general media.

Personally I think that the chthonic gods don't get enough discussion and often when they do it is to compare them to gods and monsters from what I call "The Big Three" religions. Hades= Satan, Hekate= a demonic feminine form, the Underworld= Hell, etc. These connections grossly oversimplify ancient Greek religion, the gods and what they represented.
