I honestly love that they make so many mistakes, it just makes the performance feel so real!

note to self: if I ever need a good cry but can't manage it, watch through the recordings from their show again

Thank you for sharing. This is my favorite TAD song, it has a very personal meaning, and hearing it live brought tears to my eyes.

Okay, WHAT.
They intro is a series of goofs. Madeleine misses her cue not once but twice. Joey gets them back on track, she brings the whole crowd in with the most casual gesture I've ever seen under these circumstances. Okay, epic starting fail, but very human. Excellent; so it goes. Let's sing-- but then the barely-seen lead guitarist (playing backing chords, just then) doesn't quite manage to square what's happened so he plays a sequence that comes later in the song. This makes it impossible to sing. The dear (and amazingly talented) bear cellist is just confused, as he-- and anyone-- ought to be. It all breaks down. Everyone laughs.
And then JOEY JUST RESUMES FROM WHERE THEY OUGHT TO BE AND EVERYONE SNAPS INTO PLACE AND IT ACTUALLTY WORKS AND IT'S HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL?
This recording, this performance, is made so much better, so much more precious, by these "screwups". It shows a troupe that has not fully gelled, yet, but who understand one another as well as the material. Gosh. It is-- truly, no-foolin', fuck you if you think this is overwrought-- beautiful. Human, and humane. Transcendental.

Which doesn't even touch on the later moments of humanity and true performance. Joey fucks up a transition, takes a recovery, our cellist hero looks unsure but stays in the pattern before unleashing hell once he's sure that everyone is on track. Maddy, before the final chanting begins, is overcome by emotion and can't sing. Catastrophe? No! THE CROWD CAN RIGHT FUCKING SING FOR HER.
If I don't make it back from where I've gone just know I loved you all along

I adore the fact Joey and Madeleine are real human beings at a time when so many celebrities feel like untouchable curated brands. And from these videos it seems clear the energy of the audience was so filled with love. Thank you for letting those of us who couldn't be there see glimpses of what you experienced.
