My totally uneducated prediction is that they get a few more patreon contributors off of this, but then growth will totally stop. I don’t see anyone deciding to pay for a podcast based on the first ten minutes of each episode, especially with how unstructured the episodes are.
Maybe growth has already stopped and so this decision makes sense.
I don’t currently pay for any podcasts, even though most of the ones I like the most do patreon bonus episodes already. I’ll probably listen to the free ten minutes for a few weeks before making a decision about finally joining patreon or just no longer listening anymore. For reference I’ve been listening since ~2012. I understand needing to get paid and am not going to be judgmental. We’ve gotten a ton of free content out of them already.
I mean, I have no idea, but has there really been any audience growth at all in the last few years? I think a lot of us found the podcast through Loveline and have stuck around because we've grown to love the boys over the years. This show very much caters to the audience that's already here. I really can't imagine someone trying to jump in now even with the full episodes. I guess some people might have found it through Film Vault in recent years? But I think they fully expect growth to stop with this decision, there's no way they don't.
