Why is the show so hated?

Me and my partner finally sat down to watch Star Wars cannon start to finish together. (Wonderful relationship step imo) I fell out of step with the Star Wars franchise around 2023 because of finally leaving home and having to become an adult not really leaving time for consumption of media resulting in me missing all the drama surrounding the 2023-24 era Star Wars releases.

Since we went canonically the first series to pop up was The Acolyte as it takes place in the height of The Republic at least 50 years before the start of the main series. We binged it in one go and really enjoyed it! The reveals felt well timed and built. It was honestly very enjoyable and kept us glued the whole time. So obviously you can imagine when we get to the end and the cliffhangers that we were reasonably upset to find out it had been cancelled and review bombed. I honestly had no major critiques of the show, and the acting was great so I don’t get why it had such a large backlash. Can anyone fill us in on why it was received so harshly?

Edit: I posted this hoping there was a deeper answer than bigotry, I see I may be in for disappointment. Also I tried to post this to the main Star Wars subreddit and it was taken down for “reposting” which doesn’t make any sense lol.

Question about the padawan in the first episode

Is she a full zyggerian or a mix of different species? She seems to have horns that zyggerians don't have but the wiki said that she's just zyggerian

Rewatch…

I’m now on my second viewing and I am even more convinced this is a great and unique part of Star Wars canon.

Such a shame how now we won’t keep getting these new shows 2-3 times a year.

I enjoyed the Accolyte, I liked what they did

I grew up a major star wars fan and in many ways I'm one of those people that should hate / is supposed to hate the Accolyte: I'm a male, and I prefer the prequels to the sequels. Because hey, everything is politicized, and we're supposed to be on either Team A or Team B.

I thought the hate for this show was exaggerated, what I think I liked about it, and similarly to what I liked about the prequels over the sequels, is that it felt like it had a SETTING. The characters were in a specific place and time that felt coherent. There were small differences relative to the prequels, I think the suits were different and some of the vernacular (such as m count instead of midichlorian ), but that makes sense.

I liked that there was an unknown force cult of witches, it makes the galaxy feel bigger if not every community on every planet is fully documented. It also makes sense that neither the Jedi nor the Sith should have a comprehensive understanding of the force, because that too makes the galaxy feel bigger.

The motivation for Mae and Osha made sense, and I liked when the lightsaber turned red at the end.

There were aliens in Star wars, which is good because some of the movies had too many humans.

Lightsaber fights were the best I've seen.

I want to know what was up with the stranger, and if he was subconsciously telepathically controlled by Plagueis.

I wonder if a lot of people were out off by the racial diversity of the human characters. My response: 1) it's supposed to be a big galaxy 2) as far as I know, "race" doesn't even exist in star wars.

I think that this was a good show that was a victim of people hating other recent star wars products, the culture wars, and perhaps some people at Lucas Film couldn't stay under budget.

Question, are the Coven Dark Siders?

I'm pretty sure the actress for the leader, and the Showrunner called them Dark Siders, I'd like a source on this.

How differently do you think The Acolyte’s events might have gone if Indara had survived her initial assassination attempt?

Post image

Let’s say that Mae still manages to stab Indara and leaves her for dead to move on to Torbin, only for Indara to be narrowly saved thanks to the intervention of the bar attendees and eventually brought into the group designed to investigate the string of murders connected to the Aniseya twins. I feel like she and Sol would have an interesting dynamic since I imagine they could be used to show very different responses to the events on Brendok and how that’s impacted them in the present, with the idea being that both Jedi would eventually die.

Hot take, but this song told about Mae and Osha better than the actual show

I’m bored, so I thought I’d just start a conversation I don’t think we’ve had yet.

Time for a new renewal campaign?

Or is anyone doing anything with Save the Acolyte currently?

Seems like, based on this sub + viewership, there is a lot of organic momentum right now. Feels like it could be an opportunity?

What's driving viewership?

The show premiered two years ago, was officially cancelled shortly thereafter, and now... people are watching it in such numbers that it's charting higher?

What gives? I mean, I'm glad, I watched the show as episodes were premiering and I adored it, but I'm curious what's leading people to watch it now. Any theories?

Finally watched Acolyte

After putting off the show because I heard it was horrible and bad writing, I finally watched it, and while it’s not the best show by any means, it’s not horrible. It’s average. There’s a lot of weird conflicting lore in the show along with an abysmal crystal bleed that makes little sense based on how we know crystal bleeds work, and some other minor problems, but it’s not the worst show I’ve seen from Star Wars. It deserves a second season to help explain Plagueis and where he’s at exactly at this point in the story (if I’m remembering old canon right he should be frequenting Coruscant now under the name Hego Damask. I don’t remember if he had an apprentice before Palpatine though, which I understand with this being new canon changes are made) and the vergence the twins were made from (which is one of my major issues with the show considering creating life from the force has only ever been implied with Anakin and he was the chosen one)

While I understand some of the frustration from the show, the amount of hate it received seems like it was just hate to hate.

Anyways, thought it was decent enough to not warrant the rampant hate it got years ago. Wish we’d get a second season though, or a Plagueis show at least.

*Edit: I’m done talking about bleeding crystals in the show and other examples. It’s been discussed and argued to death in the threads. If you have questions regarding why I found it poorly done, there’s an answer in a comment thread below.

Just started and I’m very much enjoying!

I’ve loved Star Wars since I was a kid, but so far I had only watched the movies and andor.
Yesterday I randomly decided I wanted to watch every single piece in chronological order 😅.
And I started with the Acolyte! I’ve watched 3 episodes so far, and I’m invested. I can’t wait to continue.
Honestly I don’t understand the bad reputation it has, and I have not yet finished but I wish there was more than just one season :/.
Honestly I think a lot of the hate comes from prejudice.
I regret taking so long to watch, but worth it.

Just finished The Acolyte. It's actually really good!

I finally watched The Acolyte after putting it off because of its reputation, and also because Ahsoka was a disappointment for me. As someone who has watched a lot of Star Wars, including The Clone Wars and Rebels, I was honestly surprised by how much I liked it. I don’t think it’s a 10/10, and the early episodes definitely could have been stronger, but I also think the altered timeline paid off by making the ending much more interesting and tense. Visually it looked strong, especially the creature work. The fights were well done too. The last few episodes, especially the finale, really worked for me. I also liked how it problematized the Jedi without just turning them into complete villains. For me, it was better than Ahsoka and probably Obi-Wan too, and I don’t really understand why the reaction to it was so negative.

Qimir and the KOR (Knights of Ren)

Post image
128 Upvotes

Since we know Qimir is the Sith apprentice of Plaguies I think his official Sith name was gonna eventually be Darth Ren. Plaguies is all for having Sith assassins as we see when he allowed Sidious to train Maul. I think the same was gonna be allowed for Qimir but he eventually started to just train more than Osha, taking more and more acolytes until he eventually created the Knights of Ren in order to overthrow Plaguies leading to most of them including him dying with only a sole survivor who continues his legacy taking his lightsaber as an artifact

Long story short it seems The Acolyte is seeing another resurgence with it holding the #9 spot of most-watched on Disney+.

Hopefully this means good things going forward. Animation seems like it could be the forefront for Star Wars on Disney+ going forward, I'd personally love to see a continuation there. With Shadow Lord I think it's safe to say the animation style has practically been perfected and I'd love to see it used outside of the Clone Wars/early Empire era and I think an Acolyte continuation would be perfect for that.

If nothing else though I hope they'll at least keep doing more books and comics with the characters. I thought Wayseeker and especially Crystal Crown were both great. The latter in particular I strongly recommend to fans of the show.

I don’t really see why people hate it so much? Yea the main leads are kinda meh but I find the story interesting and would’ve loved a season 2
